Vampires have nests. But none of those have connections that can compare to the bond of a werewolf pack. You should know. You're part of one, either born a werewolf or turned. For humans, blood is thicker than water; for wolves, the pack is to the bone. Of course, with humans, romantic relationships can complicate closeness of other sorts. That's not the case with werewolf pairings, as they tend to grow out of natural pack dynamics and are viewed as just another facet of life. The only difference is that werewolves tend to treat relationships, even potential would-be-mates, with extreme seriousness. [ She's been in bars like this countless times before. The people speak different dialects, wear shirts for different sports teams, but there's always that same sense of destroyed hopes underneath, a sense of depression and bitterness that hangs in the air. Always the same creeping smell of stale beer and vomit with various levels of cleaning solution. The bar is dim, lit by the obligatory drink signs like Bud Lite and Heineken.

She knows he's here. She can track scents as well as he can; he probably knew she was here as soon as she entered the bar.

She ignores the people watching her and sizing her up. Whatever they want, she can deter them. Even before Ra's had turned her, thinking a shunned agent with no living connections might be useful, she'd had enough skill to deter most people. Now, with dubious thanks to Ra's, she has more. Not enough to fight Ra's and win - she'd never had that before, and she never will. But enough to fight humans.

She knows he has skills, too. He's been around longer than she has, and people talk about him with enough regard that she knows he's not like the others in the pack. Ra's gives him more freedom than the rest - another sign that he's not like the others.

But Ra's never truly gives people freedom; he gives them only the illusion of it.
