They were friends once. Years ago, as children. Catherine's father, who was the head of a powerful criminal organization, oft dealt with Yuffie's lineage of ninjas and thieves. To foster a good relationship out of their work relationship, the girls sometimes had playdates. Yuffie liked to show off her sleight of hand and Catherine liked to see Yuffie get into trouble. Things weren't so bad, though eventually their fathers went their separate ways.

Catherine mostly forgot about Yuffie so it was a big surprise when the girl showed up out of the blue one day as an intruder in the house. She appeared to steal something, which was the part that came as no surprise at all. She may have been able to get into the house, maybe a holdover of her familiarity with it from her youth, but she wouldn't find actually stealing from them so easy. Catherine took pride in the prestige of her family and so to have someone trying to steal from them was taken as an insult. It felt like a sort of betrayal that Yuffie was once in Catherine's good graces. How utterly disrespectful.

At Catherine's direction, the new defense features of the Zou household included boobytraps in important rooms. It made no sense to hire guards to maintain vigilance over every square inch of the house, and she didn't like the idea of cameras being eveywhere nor the idea of having to rely on someone to pay attention to all the cameras so traps were the next best thing, she decided. The particular treasure that Yuffie was apparently after had a lot of value and so earned a valuable trap. It came in three stages. There was a sharp edge hidden on the handle of the safe. A separate sequence was required to withdraw the blade separate from actually unlocking it. The door locked itself, too, and a missed switch triggered the release of a gas into the locked room. There were no windows for anybody to escape through, either. Both the gas and a poison on that blade were mostly harmless, though some minor brain damage was a potential side-effect. Mostly they were potent tranquilizers, used primarily for their reliability in knocking people out. It served a bit of a dual-purpose, since Catherine had a sadistic side and welcomed every opportunity to obtain more hapless victims for her hobby. It was especially convenient since the police rarely showed up with the lead that a thief was last spotted entering her home. No one ever came for the people she kept.

Catherine strips Yuffie down to her birthday suit and straps her down to what's basically a stand with a cushioned top. She's laid on her back over the top of it and her wrists are put in cuffs attached to the side of the platform. The thick leather cuffs have an even thicker layer of cushioning so that they can be as tight as possible on her wrists without biting into her skin. If she struggles, it's less likely she'll hurt herself that way. Cushiony straps wrap over her shoulders like backpack straps, only they're too taut to be shaken off easily. Lastly a bar extends above the top of it, connected to the platform's sides, and cuffs similar to those on her wrists hold her ankles captive. It keeps her legs in the air over her and exposes her holds nicely.
