all this time, he's been egged on by yusuke and kurama with stupid shit like 'we're all one big happy family' and 'kuwabara! keeping it in the family, i see?' and stupid shit like that and he never realized once!! what the hell!!

nothing like finding out via accidentally walking in on a moment either!! he was there for! the! whole! thing! what does he mean 'i'm your brother' and 'i had a feeling'? kuwabara's only slightly mad he's, again, the only one left out. moreover, he's kinda happy because it's something yukina's wanted to figure out for years and it was about damn time it was confirmed. even if kuwabara still had no idea.

but hearing the clacking of hiruiseki stones falling against the porch makes him realize there's no.. point in being mad. so he slides down against the door and waits for them to finish. it's only after yukina excuses herself, with a kiss on his cheek, that kuwabara peeks his head out. ]

.. You okay?

I'll live. [ Hiei answers quickly.. maybe a little too quickly, still kind of reeling from everything that had happened. If it wasn't bad enough to be dropped off like a naughty child for healing from one's demon boss to Genkai's.. there's always Yukina catching him with both tear gems and having to admit to something he's kept quiet for... how long now?

Nearly half a century?

There's stiffness and left over aches and pains, but he's here, and he's alive, and that's what's most important right now. Also, perhaps, whether Kuwabara is going to raise hell about never being told about him and Yukina, but he'll hold the jury on that one until he gauges his human partners' reaction. Hiei finally turns to look at him, looking a bit.. weary.. but not any worse than he ever has after a heard battle that required a healing afterward.

Though.. his brow furrows, tone growing annoyed.. ]

Why are you still in there?

[ when he's asked, he sheepishly moves and plops his ass next to hiei's. he's still kinda mad - he always ends up the butt of the joke or the One Guy Everyone Holds Secrets from for some dumb reason. Or no reason at all because why the hell wouldn't they just tell him?

he doesn't say anything for a minute, checking over yukina's thorough work just to make sure nothing was missed in the... mess. once he's satisfied, he looks straight ahead into the forest surrounding and there's an actual pause, for another hot minute. ]

You feel better after tellin' her? [ he figures, this is one of those times that it really isn't about him anyway. ] I can tell she was real happy.

[ At first.. Hiei hadn't told him because of the obvious. They weren't really the best of friends when this all started, and for a while the secret was safe between Hiei and Kurama's minds. Yusuke had eventually learned the truth, but they'd just.. never told Kuwabara. Yusuke and Kurama out of duty to Hiei, and Hiei.. honestly? He doesn't know why.

By the time their 'standing one another' turned in to 'friendship' and evolved in to something like companions it was just something he lived with and didn't, honestly, think of all that often. Yukina was in his life and now living safely in the human world. There just hadn't been a pressing need for it to be mentioned, so far as Hiei was concerned, and honestly?

He'd just been enjoying being around Kuwabara and finally being able to just be there with him. This was, after all, something he never thought he'd get to have.

Kuwabara asks if he feels better, and Hiei.. offers a shrug. ]

I don't... [ Hiei pauses, thinks on this for a moment with a sigh. ] It's hard to say.

I'm sure it's a relief for her but.. it also places a target on her back just as it places one on yours.

There's a target on our backs no matter what, you know. We're friends of Urameshi's. It was gonna be on us regardless, Yukina included. [ reassuring.

he nudges hiei a tiny bit and looks down at him with an actual reassuring grin anyway. ] Just because she's your sister doesn't mean she isn't fam for all of us. We're a giant dumb rag tag team and you're in it so, you know. Default, she's in it.

Though you all apparently knew that before I did.. [ he's a lil mad. ] Whatever. If I went so long without knowing, I bet you a bunch of demons haven't figured it out either. [ or so he hopes.

kuwabara's family has always expanded quickly. first it was him and shizuru, and then it grew to okubo and the rest, and then yusuke and botan showed up. and well, with the way yusuke makes connections, the family can only grow more and more. even that little shit rinko's in it. even if he's still a cheater and kuwabara will never let that go because he totally could've kicked his ass.

but nonetheless, yukina is his family. hiei is the love of his life, whether he says it aloud or not and kuwabara will be damned if anyone hurts him or his family.

It.. wasn't intentional. You not knowing. [ Hiei knows that Kuwabara is bound to be a little sore about that one - knows human customs and his human lover enough to know that he's about to be angry about it. Or in the least bit.. peeved. To say the least amount of words about it.

But then, he also needs to point out - ]

You don't know what I've .. gone through to try and keep her safe, since we were born. Did she ever tell you.. what the ice maidens did with their boy children? Their imikos?

[ Not that those children happened very often, but he isn't sure that Kuwabara knows their grizzly fate, or what would have been if Hiei hadn't been so god damn determined to survive no matter what was put up against him. He isn't sure if it's necessarily smart to tell Kuwabara any of this, honestly, but there's... very little else he can do but share his past and hope that Kuwabara doesn't give him a stupid amount of pity about it after it's all said and done. ]

I mean, yeah, I figured. Just sucks to have to find out like this, I guess. Would rather one of you guys just kept me in the loop instead of egging it on. [ it's mainly yusuke and kurama who do it, but it is ultimately because kurama and yusuke know it's not their place to tell. even to kuwabara. sucks.

they had plenty of opportunity so he does feel like the butt of a joke. ]

Uh - no, I don't remember? I don't think so. We don't talk about that kinda stuff. [ the past is the past to kuwabara. it makes you who you are but he's ultimately a man who looks towards the future kinda guy. also, he's just stupid and he doesn't really have time to think back. ]

Why -- what's up, Hiei? [ it's clear though, that he wants to know more about hiei because he always does. that's his man and he's gonna be there for him through everything. especially bombs like having to tell your sister the truth. family's family. ]

I didn't say anything. [ No matter how many times he'd wanted to. Kuwabara would probably never have any idea how many times Kurama stopped him from man handling Kuwabara when his sister came around smelling like him to intensely. It hadn't even been a shade of jealousy, just... the same protective urges as usual. The same as he'd always had, the same ones that possessed him to sacrifice his well earned and hoarded power to keep her safe.

There's a little hum of acknowledgement as Kuwabara says they don't talk about those things.. it's a bit of a gruesome thing to tell someone, isn't it?

For a moment Hiei seems far off - digging up something old and painful was never recommended by anyone - least of all the little fire demon who's been through and dealt with so much more than he's even hinted to his boyfriend. The words roll out before he can even stop it, red eyes still far off somewhere. ]

They bind their forbidden children and throw them from the island.

Yeah, but you didn't tell me. [ he knows it'll fly over hiei's head though, which is... ultimately frustrating but he knows hiei just doesn't get why some shit upsets kuwabara sometimes. he huffs, rubbing the nape of his neck at the thought of it. he's always left outta shit which is the most annoying thing ever, okay -

even if it's small shit. but this is kinda big shit. ]

Whatever. Just try not to hide anymore stuff from me, okay? We're a team, you know. [ and that little thing is the only thing he's really upset about with the whole thing anyway.

he hears the next line and whips over at him, already getting angrier for a whole different reason. ] What?! You were just a baby! What kinda - !!!

I wasn't thinking about it when we were together. [ It's a little hard to think about things like what he hadn't told Kuwabara when, typically, he's too busy figuring out ways to slide in to his lap or something. Even if it's not even sexual, soaking up Kuwabara's attention was more important than digging up things he hadn't yet told him to make sure they were on the same page.

Which is exactly why Kuwabara gets one of those looks as he tells him not to hide anything from him -

He hadn't been hiding anything. It was more something he hadn't really thought to say, at the long and short of it. It hadn't been important just yet, hadn't been something that seemed like he had to say or inform Kuwabara of when he'd much prefer to curl up against him or take him to bed than talk about all the depressive details of how he came to be as he is. ]

Even infants only a few days old, when they're demon, are much more capable than human babies. [ Demons matured like animals, almost. Walking shortly after birth, that kind of thing. Less reliance on a mother in a cut throat world like that was for the better.

Hiei reports it all in a very factual, removed sort of way, not trying to convolute his own feelings on the matter in to the facts of what Kuwabara probably wants or need to know.

You know, in the spirit of not hiding things. ]

Ice maidens aren't known for being kind, either. There's a reason Yukina left.

The problem is that they expected me to die and I didn't.

[ he doesn't know exactly how to explain why it bothers him so much so he just gives the smallest pout and drops it because again, there's more important things going on.

kuwabara is usually a tactless guy but he's really, really good at being a good boyfriend and he knows that this was a lot for hiei. besides, there's so much more to get angry about. like what the fuck do you mean a baby gets dropped off to fuck off!!! ]

but he's also just mad because that was his boyfriend who could've died out there. nevermind the fact that he's here. it's the fact that he almost couldn't have been. ]

[ It's all factually said - even though it bothers Hiei down to the soles of his feet, releases a strange ache in his chest that he can't quite explain to anyone, nor would he choose to.. it was the truth. At lest for the ice maidens. At least for the bandits who had eventually turned away from him and his violent habits after one too many cut throat slaughters.

He'd been taking out every bit of his pent up frustrations at his circumstances on anyone he passed by. Sure he had. He realizes it now, but...

Then it hadn't been quite so clear. ]

I thought about burning down that place the last time I went, you know? Killing all of them and leaving it to rot like they would have done to me very willingly.

... But I thought that being empty their entires lives was a worse punishment.

[ he listens, super intently. hearing him talk about being discarded and how he has changed since, there's a lot of emotion to be displayed and kuwabara's not sure how to hold all of it on his face. his shoulders sag and he leans in to listen to every word, held onto every syllable. and he's ridiculously upset that this is the childhood hiei had.

and yet, so ridiculously proud of how far hiei's come. ]

Wouldn't say you lucked out, livin' the way you did. [ he holds his hand out for hiei to take with full intention of dragging him on his lap because he gives no shits who sees. ] But I'm glad you lucked out and ended up with all of us.

Screw those bitches - you're right. You got a real family now and I'm not really up for discarding you any time soon, got it? [ that wasn't the point of his story but still. he just needed to make sure that hiei knew. ]

Stop being so dramatic about it. [ Hiei snaps it out even as he obliges being dragged in to Kuwabara's lap. He wants the physical reassurance just as much as he doesn't want Kuwabara to go too far and get too emotional about all of this. It's just the facts of life for him, anymore - nothing to fuss over or get too upset about. Yes, it used to bother him, boil a deep rage down in his belly that he never thought could extinguish, but..

As it turned out Kurama was right. Time could at the very least soothe all wounds. He had many more centuries to live, after all. He is barely half way through his first at this point. ]

I wouldn't say being imprisoned in this town and the human world to work with Urameshi or facing prison was lucky.

If I'd been lucky we would have gone back to the demon world and Koenma would have never seen his baubles again.

How the hell is it dramatic?! [ kuwabara's quick to wrap his arms around his waist, encasing hiei completely. of course he's upset. this is his boyfriend, who got thrown out and had to fend for himself. of course, kuwabara's also only thinking about the fact that he'd truly be no where if shizuru didn't take care of him.

even urameshi had keiko. ]

.. Yeah but. You're with me. [ unconsciously, he tightens his grip on him, just a tiny bit. ] I mean, I guess we can go back to Makai once in a while but every time I go, somethin' tries to eat me and I can't really continue school there so.

[ he thinks he was dealt with a good hand but you know, this isn't hiei's cup of tea. ] I mean, I don't know. I like our missions. Good break from all the school shit and stuff. But uh, I - you don't have to stay here. If you really don't wanna. I can, uh, [ he clearly doesn't want to. ] get you back in, I guess? I don't know. Dimension slashy thingies are a lot but I'd rather you be happy.

[ with or without him because kuwabara is just that kind of guy. ]

Because. You're always over the top. It was .. forty years ago or so. [ Sometimes he forgets that, in the reality of it all, he dwarfs Kuwabara age wise. To demons he is painfully young, but to the man he's basically given his love life to, he's an ancient old man in a way.

Hiei's never been coddled in his life - not while he was an infant and certainly not while he'd grown older. After the bandits had turned him away he'd been stubborn about caring for himself until he'd had to rely on the demon doctor to take care of him immediately after the Jagan surgery. ]

I can go back to demon world myself if I want or need to. [ Quickly dismissive of tiring Kuwabara out over opening a portal for him when he can do it himself. ]

Though ... [ Hiei ponders for a moment, red eyes narrowing. ] .. I guess now I just have to make sure it doesn't make to Shigure that Yukina knows.

It could be thousands of years ago, I don't care. [ how the fuck do you abandon a baby. it's the complete, empathetic human part of him who can't stand to watch a helpless person get hurt. even if hiei has never truly been... helpless, in a way, he was still just a baby. he's a man of a strong code. that's just how it is.

just the thought makes him hold hiei a bit tighter, head resting on his shoulder. it's a lot. finding out yukina and hiei's relationship is a lot, knowing what hiei's gone through is a lot. but hey, kuwabara's smart enough to know more than anything, it's a lot for hiei too. ] Thanks though, I guess. For uh, telling me. [ because it's not like hiei and kuwabara talk about this kinda shit ever anyway. ]

I don't mind! I gotta, you know, practice it. It's still kinda on and off but I gotta get the hang of it sometime. I hate not having control of this shit.

[ he lifts his head again, feeling the immediate change in hiei's body language at the mention of shigure ] Well, with her here, would it even get to him?

You still... [ Hiei starts, and then sighs.. If Kuwabara thinks that's the half of it, then he's going to be pissed when he finds out it's the tip of the ice burg so far as Hiei's life goes. Tip of the ice burg so far as all he's endured in his life time, as well... but if there's anything that Hiei is good at it's enduring pain and then using it to some sort of advantage.

But he decides that.. maybe it's time Kuwabara is finally in on everything. Kurama knows probably the most, compared to all of them, and it's time that changed. Especially if Kuwabara intends to be in this for the long haul. ] ... Don't know the half of it.

[ Still, the thought of the demon doctor knowing, and who knew what kind of punishment he might enact after... Hiei roots in against Kuwabara's neck. ]

Who knows. But he's taken all my power once and he won't do it again.

I got time when you're ready. [ he's not going to pressure it out of hiei, because this is clearly a lot for him. or maybe it's not and it's just not something he wants to relive in general.

he is in it for the long haul. he's always been.

his grip loosens, but it stays around his waist and this is something kuwabara couldn't ever have dreamed of. sitting at the estate with his three eyed cat of a boyfriend on his lap like it's the most natural thing in the world.

a few years ago, it'd be insane to think about. today, it's become so familiar and natural, kuwabara can't help but be proud of how far both of them have come. ]

Hell no, he won't. [ he doesn't actually know shit but there's no way anyone can take hiei's power away. especially not when hiei has so many people at his side anyway. ] I'll hunt the asshole down myself if I gotta.

I could just... show you.. [ He does, after all, have a demonic third eye that lets him basically see or show whatever he wants. It may have a bit of a mind of it's own, but it's a boon from time to time as well depending on what's going on.

Still, Kuwabara's natural urge to protect him gets a little chuckle of out him at the very least, a shake of his head. He's stronger now than when he'd met Shigure for the first time, or even the last time he saw him, which means - ]

I don't know how you could hope to stop him, but it's a noble thought, Kuwabara. [ That, it seems would be a battle Hiei would take on himself if it came. ] Taking the Jagan may be more risky than implanting it, for all I know.

[ there's a pause because he's never been directly in contact with his boyfriend's third eye so you know. he's not sure how that works but by the resolve on his face and the way he thumbs hiei's waist affectionately, there's little doubt what he says next: ]

I'm here for ya, you know that, right? If you wanna show me, I'm not going to say no. [ because he wants to know everything there is about hiei. there's no much to be said about kuwabara after all - hiei pretty much knows everything about him.

it's about time kuwabara learns about hiei more, anyway. ]

Aw, you know I'd do anything for ya. [ and he means it. ] Regardless, we'll all be right there if you want us or not. ... Who is this guy again anyway - [ kuwabara has always been a fist first, questions later kinda guy. ]

If I don't it just gives you more to gripe about not knowing.. [ Listen, if there's anything Hiei likes it's his peace and quiet - something that he gets decidedly less of if Kuwabara doesn't know the full story behind Hiei and his sordid little life prior to meeting all of them. Every twist and turn and even the parts that he'd hidden from everyone but Kurama up until now.

.. Including how close he came to dying while earning Mukuro's trust prior to the King's tournament that would have made this entire relationship dissolve in to nothing with one death.

The Jagan is already jumping at the chance, a soft purple glow beginning under that headband at even the prompt that it might have a chance. ]

Shigure implanted the Jagan for me.. the eye's price is all of your power... and sometimes your life. I was A Class then so I suppose my power alone was enough.

[ Though, now that he thinks about it - ] The Jagan saved you and Urameshi's lives, you know. Had I been A Class when I first met you both you would've just been bloody smears on the ground.

Didn't I tell ya I wouldn't push on it if you didn't wanna say shit?? [ tbh he wants to complain bc hello ? he wanna know!! but he knows this is hiei's story to tell so. you know. trying to be a good boyfriend and stuff.

he does see the purple glow underneath the eye and he wrinkles his nose a bit. it's still Something to get used to. even if he's seen it a bunch of times. ]

Tell yer eye to calm down. You can show me if you want but he's freakin me out. [ why is the jagan its own entity. it's creepy. ]

A Clas-- Whatever. You wouldn't decimate me now, would ya? [ fellas is it gay to be turned on bythe fact that your boyfriend went from a to d to a all on his own with his growth and strength - ]

But I also know that you want to know. [ Kuwabara's probably wanted to know for far longer than Hiei gives him credit for, really, but it's the simple fact that he hasn't been ready, and... part of him will always worry that someone will see what he's been through and pity him. Which would, of course, drive him absolutely nuts. Even curled up in Kuwabara's lap as he is, there's that apprehension.

Even if he knows Kuwabara better than that.. it's still a worry he feels somewhere in his gut. ]

Not unless you wanted me to. [ And by the way a little smirk spreads on his face, he doesn't mean in a fight, either.

Though... there's resolve in him, and Hiei gives a little hum. Of course he'll check with Kuwabara in the end before he does anything - his heightened awareness and existing abilities might chafe with the Jagan a little if they aren't clear with one another. ]

I might as well show you. I'll keep the Jagan under control if you want to let it in.

Course I wanna know! You're my boyfriend. I wanna know everything about you. Or at least, whatever you wanna share. [ kuwabara doesn't pity anyone. but that doesn't mean he can't be upset that his boyfriend had to live a shitty life and he egged on him about it. even if he didn't know. ]

It's hot when you smirk like that, but not when it's about killin' me. [ he wrinkles his nose, even sticks his tongue out at him, just because. and then he gets it. ] .. Oh. Wait. No, you can do it that way. That's fine with me.

[ DUMB ]

Yeah. [ it's simple, as he lets down what little barriers he's ever had when it comes to his brain. he learns more, with the help of genkai and kurama, but there's never too much hiding from hiei anyway. ] I'm ready when you are.

Don't even think about changing anything after this. [ Hiei says it and it may seem as though he's being dramatic, but truthfully... it might. Kurama hadn't even blinked at knowing the true background of the more taciturn fire demon, but that was Kurama. He was a centuries out demon who'd seen first hand all the cruelties that life had to offer in the demon world - perish the thought of a trusted friend tossing away another's baby because it was what the elders wanted.

The Jagan, flaring to life even under that wrapping, slips tendrils to touch Kuwabara's consciousness first, gentle if only because of Hiei's influence lingering close behind. Of course his heightened awareness may not like the way that the evil eye feels edging at his consciousness and mind. Physically, Hiei arranges himself in Kuwabara's lap carefully, his head tucked in between his jaw and shoulder, breathing through it and just.. trying to remind himself that Kuwabara wanted to know. That he had no reason to think that the other man would feel any differently once he knew about his past.

Sound in the first bit of this vision is muffled, all sight narrowed to what was allowed between his bandages. Despite the layers of wards and the bindings that keep Hiei (notably uncomfortably) bound up and mostly quiet, it's easy to hear what an older woman says. Calling the wrapped infant a beast and a monster, calling for a woman named Rie to do away with him as was only proper. The woman tucks a tear gem, one Kuwabara may recognize, in to a tiny fist... and then they're falling. Infant Hiei feels a spike of fear with the bottoming of his stomach as he falls, and after an eternity there's a thud. It hurts - the pain is notable enough for Hiei to remember it, and he comes to rest in a stream. Now sopping wet, hurt, and cold with the ward binding his fiery energy, he shrieks, wearing himself chafed on the inside bindings, making ungodly noises to protest his every ache, pain and worry until he's found..

The bandits treat him like family, at first. He sits around fires while they cook and tell stories, eats along with them, trains at their sides. At least until he realizes that tear gem he's always had is valuable, and young blood lust takes control over his better sense. Time blends together here in an odd way, but there's a sense that he was with that group for at least a few years... and suddenly their doors are closing in his face as he returns to camp.

... He's alone again. Young and extremely powerful, but alone.

His childhood stays that way, it would seem. Powerful and strong, battling off any would be attackers who try to steal his tear gem - at night soothing himself by looking in to its depths before he would fall asleep. .. But even that is taken with time, and though Hiei kills the demon responsible, it is a deeply felt loss.

From there, they move on to Shigure, and the Jagan surgery. He still feels the pain acutely from his own stab wound, his hand flexing as he remembers piercing his own palm, and then... Then the Jagan eye surgery, a flesh searing pin that he tries to block the majority of from transferring more directly to Kuwabara. The Jagan seems to give a tch of irritation at not being able to inflict that same, well remembered pain on his human lover, but continues on anyway. Suddenly he goes from strong and ready to weak, barely able to stand and walk in the immediate aftermath, but peeling himself from the bed and doing it anyway. He had to learn and grow stronger, had to regain everything he'd lost so that he could find the glacial village an, after doing that, protect Yukina. That was the entire reason for the Jagan implant, after all. Protecting the sister that Kuwabara had only recently discovered was his sister, the demoness who had probably been waiting for Hiei to confirm it for as long as he had been on the task of 'looking' for her long lost brother.

He pulls away before the Jagan can share much else, though the eye fights him the entire way, a clawed finger skating gently along the curve of Kuwabara's neck as the eye closes, just...

Giving him a moment to soak all of that in. ]

[ he does soak it all in, taking in every memory of hiei's that the jagan eagerly shows him. it's invasive - way more than when someone else breaks his barriers and talks to him - and it makes his skin crawl. it's like feeling someone plant a centipede in your brain and purposely letting it circle and cling to it.

the way hiei lived life prior to their meeting is... a lot for kuwabara to handle. after all, his entire life has been dealing with no parents and just his sister taking care of him. sure, they had their troubles but it was nothing compared to what hiei's gone through.

so by the time he's pulled back, his brain is still reeling from the pain and the emotions are causing him to fumble, even when he's just sitting down. it takes a lot in him to not launch up and find that village or shigure himself. he knows hiei could handle that on his own - they just talked about it - but it's so much when something like the jagan shows you and lets you feel what your boyfriend felt.

it's a lot. he has to remind himself that hiei is here and he's tucked in his lap with kuwabara's arms around him. he's here and they've come so far, from strangers to allies to lovers and he's here. even now, he's gentle in administering touch, waiting for him and kuwabara can't help but start tearing up. ]

Fucking - I'm proud of you, Hiei. God, I said the dumbest shit to you. [ kuwabara and hiei met when kuwabara was still just a kid himself but that doesn't stop him from wanting to apologize for talking shit about his childhood. ]

[ Hiei's life, while cruel and unusual to humans.. probably isn't all that far from what most demons go through in their lives. The Makai is a cut throat world, after all, that doesn't hesitate to be cut throat if not absolutely too much. It's why many demon children don't grow up to reach maturity.. and why demons are so long lived, more than likely. No use in reaching a mature age and not being able to live it fully, right?

He knew, somewhere in him, that there was no way he was getting out of this with Kuwabara not having tears to shed. The man, for all of his bluster and talks of manliness, cries more easily than most people Hiei has ever met in his life. Granted, most of those people are demons who wouldn't even admit to a single tear shed as an infant, so.. take it as you will.

The smell of salt lets him know this time, even if Kuwabara isn't actively crying yet. Hiei sighs as Kazuma begins something like an apology, shaking his head. ]
