It had been a close call. A much closer call than it should have been, but even their advantages could be analyzed and countered.

Genesis's entire attention was on the text he was poring over, the sharp, elegant features focused, half-hidden by a sweep of scarlet hair, so bright against the fairness of his skin.

Before he could think about it, Angeal reached across the distance between them to slide his fingers along a lock and tuck it back behind Gen's ear.

Then he let his hand drop back down on the pages of the book his was - well. Clearly not very focused upon reading.

They didn't actually have Mario Kart: no Nintendo system in the apartment. What they did have was a sort of knockoff racing game - not quite as good, but good enough to kill time. Except when the wonky controls made Cassidy lose. That was his excuse, anyway.

Cassidy had been playing with his legs stretched out along the couch and across Tulip's lap. Just as his car was pulling into second place, another car hit him with a power-up weapon from behind, and he went spinning off-course.

"Oh - no, no, no, no! Oh, bollocks." His legs tensed up a bit as he tried to get his car back under control, but didn't quite leave Tulip's lap.

[ The two biggest takeaways from the debacle of their first series of encounters is that Luthor fucked up enough with Doomsday that Clark was able to send the monster out into space. Far into space, giving them enough room to come up with a plan to permanently defeat him. The second takeaway, from Bruce's perspective, is how wrong he was about the man. He's good, kind, generous, but not a pushover. Probably a good thing for someone who daylights as an investigative reporter.

He digs a little deeper into Clark the man, not Superman the alien, and finds out that his mother is struggling with house payments. The Kansas bank is more on the predatory side of lending, so he feels very little guilt in just buying the damn thing and having one of the Wayne accountants go through all the mortgages and foreclosures. And then he moves around a little money, makes things a little easier for some of the poorer clients, and directs Alfred to quietly fund a few of the local charities.

Then he makes a show of inviting himself over for dinner one night, under the mostly true guise of checking up on Martha, and shows up on the doorstep in a three-piece suit, rusty social skills, and an envelope in his pocket. ]

[Steve spends a lot of time staring at the burner phone he carries with him, turning it over in his palm, running his thumb over it like it's a worry stone. It doesn't make him any less stressed out, doesn't magically make anything better. He fucked up. If he had to make the same choice over again, he'd choose the exact same way. It doesn't mean he cares any less for Tony, just that Bucky needed it more, that he couldn't stand by and just watch.

(But, boy, did he make a lot of mistakes.)

The first few months are full of nightmares - dreams of Bucky and Peggy and every trauma under the sun. Dreams of all his other friends locked up, tortured, reciting the litany of his sins, blaming him for all he's done wrong. Dreams where he loses control when he brings the shield down into Tony's chest and crushes his ribs and fuck, those are the ones that make him wake up in a cold sweat and go out running for the rest of the night, however long it is. The Dora Milaje are used to seeing him at all hours by now.

In the end, it's not a call, but a simple text with coordinates. And although Steve's not even sure he'll come, that doesn't stop him from waiting in the palace hangar. He looks like a haunted man, shadows under his eyes, the beginning of a beard on his chin, and he doesn't know what he's hoping for. Some kind of absolution? Tony's too stubborn for that, and Steve doesn't think he deserves it. Maybe he just wants to see the man again.]
