In the universe of the His Dark Materials trilogy (or the movie The Golden Compass), every person has a creature called a dæmon that accompanies them all their lives, and is emotionally and metaphysically a part of them. Dæmons are often described as sort of external souls (while the part of the personality in a human's body is the spirit).



Basic Dæmon Facts:

- They take the shape of animals
- They can talk, no matter what their shape
- Children's dæmons can change form at will; around puberty they 'settle' and become one animal permanently
- Neither the person or the dæmon chooses the final settled form, but it always reflects their personality (although not necessarily in obvious or simple ways)
- They are almost always the opposite sex as their human
- If a dæmon feels pain, so will their person, and vice versa
- Being physically apart from one's dæmon causes horrible emotional and physical pain
- Dæmons frequently talk to and touch each other, in ways that reflect or complement their persons' interactions, but dæmons talking to humans other than their own is considered strange, and touching humans not their own is extremely taboo; it generally occurs only between long-time lovers. Touching someone else's dæmon without permission is a terrible violation.

How it works:

Just design a dæmon for your muse and put as little or as much information as you like about them (shape, name, link to a picture or species wiki if you are so inclined) in a comment, with your muse's name and series in the subject. Check out other people's dæmons and let your dæmons interact too.

Aapti does not like steelpeckers, apparently. It's hardly surprising. She doesn't really like anything. Not the first time she's taken issue with a companion without any regard for the confined space and painful echoes inside a ship--he should be an old hand at trying to reign her in. She's a small creature, really, if surprisingly dense. She shouldn't be able to take up so much space. Yet no matter how many times he tries to put himself between her and the rest of the little cabin, Bodhi feels frankly dwarfed by his other half and her total disinterest in quelling the outbursts he so wishes she'd keep under control.

He couldn't spare the energy right now to wonder about the droid and the daemon. between Aapti and the very real Imperial threat outside, even his vast capacity for worry is spoken for. He just tries to keep his engine tune-ups noisy enough to disguise her atonal growls. "Heard anything new?"

Frisk's daemon is Forté, usually in the form of something like a hedgehog or armadillo. They, oddly enough, talk to humans more than Frisk. Some people don't know that Frisk can talk at all.

It was a little strange to be having a full conversation with an armadillo, but at least the armadillo was being pretty understanding about the whole situation. Especially since the conversation was including what must have been, at least from Forte's perspective, some very stupid questions.

"So this..." Molly said, and Cassandra changed from her usual form of a cobra into a butterfly, fluttering up to perch on one of his horns. "This is not normal?"

On the uneven planes of the Outlands, there is a small glint of moving light. A lone off-road lightcycle dodges between the outcrops, taking many turns, doubling back, passing through tunnels and hidden entrances. Though the rocks remain the same, the route changes every time. One cannot be too careful when going to Flynn's hideout.

They pass through the final hidden doorway and rough rock gives way to smooth tunnel. The lightcycle slows to a stop as they reach a platform, which begins to rise once they're settled on it, taking them up to a garage where a larger off-road runner sits idle. Twin sighs of relief break the quiet.

Ram doesn't park, instead deactivating the cycle and clipping the baton to his belt as Lealia flutters out a little lopsided from where she'd been tucked between him and the bike and alights on his shoulder.

For a moment, they stand there, stopping for the first time in 2.47 microcycles. There's a soft tink as a pixel hits the floor and they wince. Healing patches can only do so much.

'Come on,' Lealia says, nuzzling his cheek. 'They still need to know.'

'Right.' He wraps an arm around his torso, holding the worst of the gash in his side and they start down the hall for the main room.

[Everything is fine. For at least thirty seconds, that is. Whatever Tony and Pen are doing goes undisturbed when the man enters the room and watches the progress. And if the man were alone, it probably would remain undisturbed. Well, more probably at least. As it is, out of nowhere a round, lengthy shadow comes bursting onto the scene, snatching at the crow before dashing back again, bouncing and flipping in all directions until it finds a place to perch, brown hair raised and beady eyes lit up in curious excitement.
