Dystopian AU

Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.


1. Stronghold - Inside the walls, we are safe. Outside the walls, there is only madness, desolation, and thirst. Everything you need is here. Mother protects us. Mother sees to all our needs. To defy or to question Mother is to put all our lives at risk.
2. Rebels against the Government - You know each other only by code names. You’ve met each other only within the safety of illegal, anonymous networks. You can only hope and trust that they are loyal to your cause, and that none of this is a trap.
3. Re-education - Once, you questioned. Once, you doubted. You know this, but you have learned of your folly. The Ludovico technique of aversion therapy is unparalleled at rehabilitating criminals. Traitors. So-called ‘free-thinkers’. You’re better now. Isn’t it wonderful, to be a productive and unquestioning member of society?
4. The Ministry of Culture - Art is lies, and lies are forbidden. Love is treachery, and treachery is forbidden. Sex is deviance, and deviance is punishable by death. History is regression, and regression is a crime. Music is rebellion, and rebellion is intolerable. Any citizens found in possession of deviant and false publications will be punished.
5. Population Control - Resources are finite. There are too many mouths to feed and not enough arable land. Which is why you have been chosen to be culled. Only the strongest, the smartest, and the most resourceful are needed in the new society. One person from your group will be permitted to survive and to return to society, richly rewarded. Everyone else must die. Weapons are right over there.

It wasn’t much of a rebellion. It was a resistance at best, if you nitpicked the words. Fledgling, new, probably less than a few hundred people scattered across the metropolis of thousands. People more concerned with staying undiscovered and keeping their free will for themselves than they were with open revolt.

They had some advantages, though. Some things that might someday let them aspire to greater things, but not now, not any time soon. There was an older man that worked for the Ministry, in the maintenance and programming of the city’s various guardian ‘Alpha’ androids, and one of the units he looked after was, itself… somewhat resistant. In proper documentation it was reported as destroyed, but in truth it was still alive and hale and helping him out quite nicely.

This was not the first time Clear had made his way to the crowded tenements where an old associate of his Grandfather now lived. He was an efficient supply-runner, able to scale the roofs and awnings and other crowded bits of construction that the security cameras on the streets never saw. He didn’t know how Tae Seragaki managed to distribute everything once he’d brought it to her, but that was for their safety, too. All he had to know was that he accepted packages from the places his Grandfather left them, and then he ran them out to distributors scattered around the city, the Seragaki family among them.

Clear dropped onto a windowsill, hunched there with his pale form layered in dirty attire to help keep him from drawing the eye. He maintained his balance easily, despite the heavy pack on his back, and moved quietly despite it all as well. The blinds were drawn across the inside of the glass and there was no indicator to tell him it was the right place, but his memory remained sound. He tapped a pattern against the frame to see if there was anyone inside to alert to his arrival.

And if he hoped there was, and if he hoped it was Aoba rather than Tae, well… that was just a personal investment.

[ This is an errand Jake had to beg for almost as much as he had to beg for the job itself.

For years his grandmother had shot down his pleas to be involved in the resistance against the Batterwitch, but after growing up on the terrible tales she'd told him about her, how could he not want to be involved in the fight for humanity's freedom? From the moment he was old enough to realize how big the threat actually was and what his grandma was doing in secret, he'd wanted to help. Always she'd argued he'd been too young, but then one day he wasn't anymore and help had been sorely needed.

There's only so much one can do isolated on an island. That is, until one factors in the technology to teleport and a good pair of fast legs.

That day he became Skaianet's very own courier. It had started with small stuff, important off-the-grid messages and little drives filled with schematics and plans, but over the years that quickly turned into supplying the resistance with weapons and whatever technological doodads might help fight the good fight.

Now, on the cusp of adulthood, he takes pride in his work and he knows he's good at what he does. Discreet, efficient, fast. He's never been caught before.

So when his grandma has a delivery she personally wants to make to one Dave Strider, famous movie director, Jake has none of it. It's a high-risk job given Strider's notoriety and although his grandma can fend for herself just fine, she's not the youngest anymore. Admittedly he also really wants to meet Dave Strider, huge fan that he is of his movies, but it's concern (carefully hidden behind fanboy motives) that drives him to beg to be given this particular errand.

Maybe his grandma catches wise because she ends up giving it to him.

It's with barely contained glee that he sets out on his task. He's not even sure what is in the bag he's been given — it's not his job to know that, no matter how curious he might be — so he treats it with the kind of care given to a bomb liable to explode any second. For all he knows it might as well be.

Moving through the city comes as naturally as moving through the jungle does. The same principles apply. So long as you're aware of your surroundings, you know what to look out for, and you move swiftly enough, you'll survive. He follows the directions his grandma gave him to a high-rise building, picking up a pizza on the way; the logo on the box flickering to life on his cloak.

The building is not what he expected from a meeting place with a Hollywood star and he finds himself triple checking when he reaches the designated apartment. Everything seems to be in order, so... nothing for it then.

He raps his knuckles on the door, tapping out a series of knocks that form a little ditty: a code signal to announce his presence. He whistles cheerfully to mask the sound from the rest of the hall, balancing the pizza box on one hand as he discreetly glances around one last time before calling out. ]
