[ Emma is a proud woman. This has been a fact of her life since she was a small girl, and that hasn't changed a lick as she's grown. She's confident, but she lacks the ego that would have make that pride insufferable, and so as much as she may cling to her piety, she can also admit when she's wrong.

And the reality is that she was wrong about Joshua Faraday.

Not terribly, mind you, because she still thinks he's an unscrupulous scoundrel, but rather than see him as fully irredeemable, unpleasant, and downright haughty, she finds something under it all that she... likes? Is that too strong a word? Perhaps "tolerates" is more apt; she doesn't abhor his company, if nothing else. That day at the pond had been enlightening, and not only had she shared more about herself than she had in years, but Faraday entrusted her with himself. A small thing, in the eyes of some, but given he'd gone out of his way to assure all the others that he didn't have an ounce of power in him, it felt awful important. They'd even spent the rest of their afternoon surrounded by one of her favorite fields of wildflowers, letting their horses graze as they ignored the distant pops of gunfire. It was space for the both of them – letting Faraday clear his head of the emotions running rampant in town, and offering Emma a flicker of peace that she's failed to find since Matthew's death.

(Her husband was her rock. Her joy and her home, her serenity and her family.

She lost more than a lover by Bogue's hand.)

After the day spent by Faraday's side, she isn't near so cold to him. She doesn't smile (because the closest she gets is with Leni's baby girl), but a tentative, vague beginnings of what might even be called fondness will soften the air between them whenever she passes him by. She doesn't greet him with frosty glares or daggers tossed over her shoulder with her eyes, anymore, and there's something companionable about the quiet nod of greeting she'll give him.

(Vasquez notices one day as Emma passes him and Faraday through the town streets, and with a cigar between his lips, he casts the gambler a cocked eyebrow.

"What did you do that she doesn't look at you like you're some mangy mutt now? No way you took her to bed, güero.")

The atmosphere in Rose Creek gets heavier as the days pass by, until finally, the night arrives before Bogue is set to ride into town. Few hours left, they all know, and while most try to get the sleep they need, Emma finds herself up, chasing after the ghosts in her nightmares.

But rather than chase them alone, she whiles away time in the darkened Imperial Saloon, sharing spirits with Faraday by the light of a single lantern.

She's afraid, because she can't quite help that, but as she gulps down liquid fire, that eager flame of vengeance burns hotter than the liquor ever could. She wants righteousness. She wants justice.

And tomorrow, she wants to believe she'll have both.

(And she'll take that revenge she feels she so desperately deserves.)



Emma doesn't stay out of the fight, no matter what Chisolm's told her. She saw Goodnight ride off, and they need at least 30 men to make up for the kind of shot he was.

Emma will just have to do.

Like wildfire, Emma rips through the corpses that flood her town. Living men, familiar faces, mercenaries and bodies alike – she doesn't give a damn who she puts in the ground. Her aim is steady and true, and she picks off Bogue's forces where and when she can with her (father's) rifle.

She's eventually forced into cover, shielding her neighbor from bloodthirsty Denali. Even after Red Harvest sees them through, Emma has to stay by the injured man's side, soothing him as his wounds take their toll. She has to wait until he goes still and limp in her arms, and then she's focusing the burbling power in her chest, bitter and smoky, until red-black mist pours out of her mouth and past the blood-caked lips of the body slumped against her.

She wishes she had the time to ease him back into himself, but as soon as he's jolting with a sudden gasp, Emma untangles herself, murmuring an apology and scooping up her rifle to leave it all behind.

It's not until the distant echo of an explosion goes off that Emma realizes something is— off. Changing. The tide seems to have turned, the flow of the dead ebbing, easing out, and she stays back to watch Chisolm corner Bogue in the church.

As thick hands strangle the life out of the Robber Baron, Emma Cullen puts the final bullet in the necromancer's body. He goes limp against Sam, his own gun clattering noisily to the wooden floor.



Everything after is cleanup. Bodies have to be gathered for Emma to see to the lot of them, but in the immediate aftermath, she finds herself combing the battlefield, looking for a familiar face.

"Faraday?" she asks Sam as he, Red Harvest, and Vasquez gather outside the church.

Grim-faced, Sam nods out to the field where bits of dirt and debris have been scattered far, out amongst the grass. He knows what Emma can do, but—
she has to have a body first. She has to find him. ]

Faraday!

[ She shouts out across the bloody plains, her skirts gathered up in her hands as she steps over limbs and discarded weapons alike, her eyes scanning the ground around her. ]

[Something about the world was changing. Monster attacks were increasing and the population was getting nervous. There weren't enough heroes to go around. Shinso's village, small and superstitious, decided that the best way to protect themselves was to appeal to the dragon that lived on a nearby mountain.]

[It's not like any of them had ever met the dragon. They assumed he must like dragon stuff. The village didn't have treasure, or luxuries, or young girls suited to be brides, but...]

[They had a sacrifice.]

[Hitoshi Shinso was said to be the child of a witch. When he spoke, he had the power to seize a person's free will. He only had to demonstrate it a few times as a foolish child before he gained a reputation. When then on, it didn't matter what he did. He was a curse on the village. They wouldn't chase him out or kill him but they hardly showed him kindness. He was the perfect person to offer up.]

[He had different plans, of course. For all the times people had called him evil, Shinso hadn't wavered. He wanted to be a hero. He wanted to help people- and have people be grateful to that help. So, he didn't argue being sent up to the mountain. He would try and get the dragon's help one way or another.]
