( She's only known Noctis for a couple of weeks. Only just agreed to a date with him, really. Things are still new, and there's still so much Serah doesn't know about him. All the same, that doesn't stop her from uttering a horrified No way! when a passing guard asks her if she's here to celebrate the prince's birthday. How could she not know that? And now she's at the Citadel empty handed, trying to find him.

Well, she supposes there's enough money in her purse to cover a lunch date. )

( It's an honest mix up. Gladio's birthday is only a few days after that of a friend from her tutoring company. The dates got mixed up in the chaos of spring - all the running around, trying to make sure she was ready for school picking back up left Serah a little scattered in other areas of her life.

Still, she's booked the restaurant already, and bought a new dress for the occasion - a floaty, pastel number which ties (and unties) quite easily. So there's no point in cancelling everything now. She treats it as a normal date, offers the story mid-starter for a smile or two from Gladio, cheeks as pink as her hair.

It was ditzy, but it's not the worst thing that could have happened.

It's a familiar song and dance from there, as they walk slowly back to her apartment and she invites him up, waiting to close the door before she guides his hand to the bow holding her dress together. )

[ Noctis has never needed to announce when his birthday was -- it's not like the entire kingdom doesn't already know it; the tabloids and newspapers keep coming up with gossip columns and op-eds about him and Noctis can't be arsed to bother about a great number of it. His dad quashes a majority of it, but some get through the cracks all the same.

Still, he can't blame Serah for not knowing; it's something only the die-hard royal fans put to heart, and the last thing he wants to do is pressure her into doing something for him when he doesn't like the fanfare of it all. It's just as well that they've just started dating, beginning to learn more about each other -- no pressure that way, right?

So when she finds him in the study, he's poring through a few files and dossiers, cross-checking some things and clearly having lose track of time. It's only when she speaks up that the prince glances up, surprise becoming something soft and pleased. ]

Serah? What're you doing here?

[ It's a mix-up that Gladio had been entirely oblivious to -- it's strange that Serah would be more... more, tonight, and however he wracks his brain he can't figure out the reason for it. It's definitely not their anniversary, he would've remembered. Her birthday, too, and he'd given up trying to guess because that way probably leads to bad things. So when he finds out, later, just what she had planned for and how she had mixed the dates up, he had laughed softly, finding himself endeared all the more by her.

So he pretty much leans into it, pleased to have her and happy to enjoy their time together. She's beautiful tonight, stunningly so, with a dress that's turning out to be his absolute favorite.

It's a normal date with a beautiful woman, and when she guides his hand to the bow he leans down to kiss her, soft and gentle and so full of amusement and warmth. Gods, she's so cute like this, and he's pretty sure Serah had chosen the dress for the express purpose of letting it fall off her with one tug.

Which he does, pulling on the string so that it unfurls, and the dress slips off of her, shimmering to the floor. ]

I always wanna unwrap you. So now you're my early birthday present, huh?

The last minute request still irritates him even at its most benign core. It's just Lin's luck his phone doesn't drop the call for once on his way to the station, conveniently putting at Jiro's sweet tongued disposal. The bar owner is hard to turn down, as Jiro rarely, if ever, asks him for anything significant (aside from that one unfortunate business). When he hurriedly begs him to make a detour at his apartment to feed the cat that neither he nor his bratty kid had been around to care for all day, Lin can't help but grumble, protest, then agree.

On the one hand, Lin's already on his way for what passes for a date. Not that he's particularly enthused about it, despite what the height of his heels could tell you, or the earrings, or the evening make up--right, he is in fact dressed up with more care than usual. He could always say it's self-care. On the other hand--

He's already lost track of the argument with himself, right as he arrives at the carpeted hallway outside Jiro's door. The spare key turns the lock clunkily enough, but it's not what the young man notices once he steps into the darkness of the foyer.

One set of indentations along the plush carpet is telling enough. Two, three, four, five--nine?

"I'm stabbing the first person who jumps out at me."

He announces without turning the lights, his tone as sharp as the proposed stabbing.

Nine is a whole baseball team.

Banba had pretty much never planned a birthday party. With anyone else, he might worry, but Lin had probably never HAD a birthday party, so he has no base expectations outside of what he might have seen on his soaps. He just has to go for the things Lin likes and hopefully, it will all end in as much of a happily ever after two assassins on the highway to hell can ever manage.

Jiro's help had been... absolutely irreplaceable. He'd been his second banana the whole way through. Thank God he's a romantic. Decorating the apartment and planning food and coming up with a plan to lure Lin to Jiro's place. It'd been a true team effort. He must have thanked Jiro one thousand times. He'll be babysitting Misaki until his dying days as repayment, but he's okay with that.

He's only nervous when he hears Lin open the door. This had not gone his way the last time he tried to take a relationship to the next level with someone. Surprising Lin with a birthday party is risky enough. A proposal too? He might really die this time.

But it's... worth the risk, honestly. It's worth it to try. It's all he can do anymore. Try and hope for the best.

Despite the threat, he's the one to throw up a hand to signal the lights needed flipped on and jump out as the martyr of the group. The others join in, just a moment after confirming there was no immediate blood.

"Happy birthday, Lin-chan!"

It's warm.

It's really, undeniably warm. It takes Lin a moment to realize the sudden change in temperature has more to do with the flood of his heat to his cheeks than any spontaneous heat wave. His face is outright burning. He's more mortified to find it's embarrassment tinged with shyness, of all things.

There's the whole set, alright. Mushroom, doc, the old man, Jiro-who's-supposed-to-be-away, Jiro's brat, whatshisname, Maru-chan, the dandy, and the head moron himself.

The man Lin has been planning on having a nice, normal perhaps even romantic dinner with this evening. Alone. Sitting down at an actual restaurant table for once.

Instead, he just had to make a spectacle of himself and Lin, not one to be spared. Never one to be spared.

"I'm leaving," he announces tersely, turning on his heels with determined deftness that surprises even himself before stomping soundlessly out into the hallway.

Banba is just kind of... frozen in place, watching Lin process the whole moment. At first, it's cute because he can just watch the embarrassment fill up his face from the neck up. He's pink and folding into himself a little, but it's honestly endearing.

Banba's hands just hang in the air, aimed at the balloons hanging above their heads as if to point out that this genuinely is a birthday party and not some bad joke.

Buuut then Lin's just. Heading out the door. Well, he hoped we were past this. This definitely ruins step two if he's stomping out his getaway.

Banba waves his arms at the others and urges them to hide some of the 'secondary' decorations before snatching a small bundle of balloons and hurrying along after Lin's trail.

"Ah, wait, Lin-chan! Hold on!"
