Wings For Everyone!

No, really, it's like Oprah on a bender, everyone gets a pair! They can be feathery, leathery, tattered, pristine, made out of glitter, feathers, tissue paper or star-stuff.

The only limit is your imagination (and reference pics, if that's your thing)

Maybe your character has always had their wings, maybe they just woke up with them for the first time this morning like an odd take on Gregor Samsa, it's entirely up to you.

[Okay okay okay, I usually go with one of two options for the Buckster - 1: everyone has them (or at least enough of the population that it's not super weird, just like being a redhead or something) and he lost one in the fall along with his arm, only Hydra didn't bother to replace/repair it. or 2: They decided he needed to be a literal angel of death and grafted them on because he didn't have them before (only it was kind of a hackjob the way they did everything else)

[Okay well I did recently read a great fic where HYDRA kidnapped Sam and did that exact hackjob on him, to make him into the next-gen Winter Soldier Angel of Death they decided they needed, but as I'm writing this I'm realizing with option 1 Sam could teach Bucky how to fly and that is amazing. So yes, I vote option 1, maybe a lot of people have them, a lot fewer have them and can fly with them, Bucky's strong enough to fly now, Sam can teach him to use his new wings as wings and not weapons y/n?]

Bucky remembered flying. Sort of. He knew that he had flown, multiple times, the massive condor wings were good for that. Most homo avians didn't have the strength to actually fly, though a fair few could, and even more could glide after a fashion.

But the fall that had cost him an arm had also cost the primaries and a good section of the secondaries from the left wing, and even with everything else Hydra had taken from him, they'd left the right one intact, likely to study it for their own purposes, though once the Soldier was finally mission-ready the wing had been pinioned, preventing him from using it as anything other than a club, though they'd let him keep most of it to counterbalance the weight of the arm.

Then, while everything else was happening, he hadn't had a chance to miss it, not really, but his recovery time in Wakanda had definitely brought that to the fore, even though there were fewer Avians there than in most places. There were still enough, however, for Shuri's study and she'd built him a new wing, vibranium skeleton with what was essentially cloned tissue over it, to prevent his body from rejecting the implant. Re-growing the pinioned wing had been a similar process, though to a lesser extent. He'd told her that he didn't properly have the words to thank her, and she'd taken that in stride, as she did most things.

But now that the feathers had grown in completely and he didn't have molting-fuzzy patches any more, it was time to test them out. Which would have been fine, except for that disconnect between instinct and what he thought he should remember.

Steve's wings had grown with the serum, but still proportionally. He could glide with the best of 'em, but what made a flight-ready Avian was the ability to take flight from the ground, and in their merry band of misfits, Sam was the one and only. Or he had been, until Shuri had announced that she could give Bucky back more than just his arm. And then there were two.

It had still been a long journey for Bucky to get here, but Sam had known someday they'd be exactly here, in a little valley without any livestock on the ground, a good wind sweeping down the hillside, plenty of room for running starts, grassy enough that running tripping-and-falling wouldn't hurt too much. Because that was gonna happen. A lot of stuff had to happen at just the right times for a decent takeoff, and it all had to keep happening for a sustained flight. It was probably a lot like learning to ride a bike. (A lot of Avians didn't learn to ride bikes. Moving that fast tended to create too much lift, even in Avians who couldn't fly. Of course, sometimes that was a reason to learn.)

"All right," Sam said, taking a breath of that fresh air, learning what it could tell him about the sky at that minute. "How are they feeling? Loose, all stretched out?" They looked gorgeous enough, that dark sheen giving way to a startling flash of white underpinning. You'd never know one of them had been grafted on. Sam stretched his own wings and let them relax, sweeping down from his shoulders. Even up close, the black edging of the white feathers looked like a pen and ink sketch.
