If it had been a month or so earlier, he'd have skipped this event outright. It wasn't the type he considered unbearable - he saved that for the ones that seemed to be held solely to show off, stroke the host's ego - but he still just didn't see the purpose of it beyond anyone single throwing themselves at each other. A good chunk of the reason he didn't put effort into getting out of this was that at least he no longer had to deal with that, arrogant as he knew that was. It helped, too, that it was outside,on a nice evening.

But really the deciding factor was their bet. Despite that multiple times on that first night he was sure he'd just lost, they'd kept it going and it had spiraled a bit since then, and only gotten more entertaining. He would even go so far as to say he was looking forward to that portion of the evening.

Amilyn notices him early on, it's hard not to as he's the only face in the room she doesn't recognize. It's taken some horrible conversations and a few attempts at dodging even worse potential conversations, for her to make her way over to him.

It started as a way to piss Sam off. He'd gotten the idea after the fourth Wakandan had asked when he and Steve had fallen in love and Sam had burst out laughing, as though the idea of it was absurd. And yeah, maybe it was. But Sam couldn't just assume that and have Bucky take it sitting down. So he'd lied. Sam had choked on his beer hearing the long, drawn out story. And then he just never fessed up.

It is a surprisingly easy lie to tell, Bucky realizes. He'd told Sam to keep quiet because Steve doesn't like people knowing; risk of loved ones being used against each other and all. But even without Steve playing along he's already pretty much ...well. Playing along.

A hand to the back. A long hug. A few moments of significant eye contact and nights spent in each other's rooms seems to be enough to keep Sam believing. And if he knows Natasha, she's either onto him or buying into the lie as well. It's fun. A game, almost. And with him stuck here, he needs all the entertainment he can get.

But it had to come to an end. And that end seems to be this dinner when a wrapped gift gets put on the table between him and Steve from an uncomfortable Sam.

"I may not like him," Sam starts like he's chewing glass. "But you both don't have to walk eggshells or anything. This is a safe place so. Secret's safe. With me, with her, with...everyone here. Alright? So. Happy anniversary."

Bucky flushes a second before blanching. How did Sam remember that story well enough to remember the date? And to get them a gift? Bucky groans and turns to Steve. He'd meant to tell him awhile ago about this lie, but... oh well. Game over.

"There was a kid," he explains with an apologetic shrug before Steve can even ask. "She was asking about us. You know. The popular questions. And Sam was there, so..." He waves his hand to allow Steve to fill in the blanks. Thanks man knows his asshole of a best friend. And it was all in good fun.

Hank doesn't go undercover often, and never for the longer operations. It's not his style to throw everything aside and go LARP with criminals, and it's also not his strength, and that means Fowler's never requested he head off any of his old drug stings by posing long term as an anything.

Shorter stings, though? Harder to wriggle out of, especially when it's just the nature of getting close to targets.

Connor's posing as a human tonight, something made easier by the missing LED. Connor's still keeping a low profile though; same as Hank.

It's not difficult. It's not particularly elaborate. If anything, having Connor along to cheat them into the system they're trying to access means it's even simpler than the handful of other temporary 'just pretend you're not a cop for two hours' cases Hank's been on.

It's in a restaurant that's suspected of being used for a laundering operation. Not a huge deal, usually, and definitely not one that requires homicide police, except for the part where the person who'd left the initial tip turned up dead in a not-concretely-connected-but-now-we've-got-the-heebie-jeebies incident.

Connor leaves to 'use the restroom' about two minutes before Hank follows suit, and about ten minutes after they've ordered food. Hank finds the cramped closet that Connor texted him about with minimal searching.

"Jesus Christ, it's a fucking mess in here."

Connor had made some comment about intentional disarray to distract from the fact that they've got a safe in the back of the closet, presumably with Bad Guy Incriminating Evidence inside of it, like cooked books or false receipts or something else. Hank just lets him do his thing, interfacing with it to pick the electronic lock.

They're in there maybe a minute before someone walks down the hallway, which makes Hank's heart start climbing up his throat even while he just shifts to cross his arms. But then there's the slight metal-rattle of someone putting their hand on the doorknob to the closet and Hank's looking at their options.

He's armed. So's Connor. He'd rather not start a gunfight in a money-laundering business while he's trapped in a tactically-ill-advised closet in a deadend hallway, though.

With the five seconds he's got to think it over, Hank's human brain can only come up with so many options.

"Sorry." He says, and he's already pushing Connor away from the safe, grabbing him roughly by the front of his shirt. "Trust me for a sec, okay?" Hank's half-worried Connor's going to think he's starting a fight. He feels fucking ridiculous, cramming himself in between Connor and the safe, one hand staying on Connor's shirt, the other grabbing the back of Connor's head. Jesus fucking Christ, maybe he should just let them get shot.

"Did you ever hear of fucking knocking?" Hank spits out first, right as the door's opened enough to reveal the apron-clad guy on the other side. He's not kissing Connor, but he pulls back like they just were, fixing apron-guy with an aggravated stare.

"...This is employees-only."

"Yeah, yeah." Hank lets his hand drag down a bit further on the back of Connor's head - must be his neck, actually, because it's definitely just synthetic skin and not synthetic hair under his fingers - and tries to ignore how creepy it feels to try to sell this. But Hank's also caught enough young adults fucking around in cars that it's easy to pull up the nervously-defiant-and-horny script. "Just figured there'd be less people walking in on us here than in the bathroom. Guess we were wrong." When in doubt - blame the person who's in the right.
