Smut in the time of taboo.

Most societies have certain mores that are unspoken rules; humanity itself even has such conventions, grilled subconsciously into our minds for our own safety. Don't go out alone at night. Avoid getting wet when it's cold. Don't pick fights with those stronger than you...okay, some of us missed the boat on the last one, but the point still stands. Society's rules tend to be more variable, though they apply to most aspects of life - including sex. In fact, bending the rules on what's considered acceptable in romance and sexual encounters can lead to anything from ostracization to death, depending on the time and culture.

So, play it close to the chest if you're going to do a big, big, big t a b o o. Is it worth the risk?

Adventuring alone was something Kazuki had grown accustomed to. IT was easier that way, set your own pace, pick which way to go without any argument, and do whatever the heck you wanted, whenever you wanted. That was all well and good, but then he'd met Myrrh and he started to think differently. When they'd first met, it was completely by chance, traveling the same road to the same place. He wasn't one to let silence linger too long, so he started talking and asking questions. By the time they left that town, they did so together. It had been that way for a while now.

Now they were between towns, having set up a quaint little camp and settling in for the evening. There was a curious scent in the air, floral and yet nothing Kazuki could identify. It seemed to be everywhere, ever since the sun had set. It didn't seem to be a bad thing so he didn't worry about it after the initial curiosity wore off. He found himself looking in Myrrh's direction a lot more than usual, and so he slid a little closer to her as they sat beside the fire. He couldn't help but smile. "A copper for your thoughts?"

Myrrh could handle being alone for long stretches of time, but she certainly didn't prefer it. Now that she'd started to socialize with humans, she was, despite her shyness, enthusiastic about making at least a few friends here and there. So she found traveling partners where she could, and Kazuki was quite nice company. Handsome, too, she'd noticed without much thought beyond that for the most part.

Still, that left them as a man and a woman - despite her very young appearance - alone and far from anyone else. Myrrh, having only vaguely noticed the smell, looked at Kazuki for a moment before speaking. "...thinking that it's... quite nice, being alone with certain people."

Kazuki was a little different when it came to being alone. He liked it, not as a permanent condition, but long stretches of being on his own was nice. There was no one to tell him what to do, when to do things, like wake up or go to sleep. He could set his own schedule and then break it if he so desired. But that isolation did take a toll. He needed some contact now and then, a friend to share a meal with, to talk, or just occupy the same space. Myrrh had become all three, and a trusted travel companion. She knew how to get from one place to another, she didn't overburden him with strict schedules, and she was terribly cute.

The fact they were alone so often wasn't lost on him, and maybe he had thought about a number of what if scenarios, but it never felt like the right moment to test whether the feeling was mutual. "Yeah, it is nice. I like being alone with you." Without thinking he reached over to place his hand on hers. "With you I don't have to be anything but myself."

Myrrh nodded; she appreciated the sentiment, and the hand, the warm, comforting touch of another person. Her face flushed a little, more than usual, and she looked shyly over at Kazuki. "We can do... what we like... with only one another to have any opinions."

She could do silly thing she wouldn't in front of most people, if she wanted to. For now, she would just lean over a little, to rest her head on Kazuki's arm, wing fluttering and then resting against his back.
