THE DUBCON MEME

WARNING - MEME MAY CONTAIN TRIGGERS



Whether it gets awkward and painful or if it goes perfectly smooth, generally speaking the basic fundamentals of sex are the same: there are two (or more) attracted parties who both decide to act on that attraction. If there's not attraction involved, there's still a mutual consent involved. If it's not mutual, there's a problem in the line somewhere...but what about when there's strong grounds for that mutual consent to be disputed on one or both sides?

Sometimes, things get a little bit (or quite a lot) dubious.


Step One: Post your character with Name/fandom/preferences, and be sure to consider just how closely to what side of dubious consent you're willing to walk (slightly dubious, or very obviously invalid)

Step Two: Others respond, rolling up or choosing a scenario.

Step Three: One or both parties get consent all muddled up.

Step Four: Deal with the fall out afterward, if you choose.


1. Outside coercion - On display, or some perverted laws, or maybe there's a breeding facility of some sort.

2. Aphrodisiacs - Accidental or on purpose, one or both have been doused heavily in some sort of irresistible aphrodisiacs.

3. Biological imperative - Baby-making (or many attempts) must happen NOW. For the sake of children, or just to survive something.

4. Intoxication - Beer goggles and impaired judgement.

5. Illicit substances - Lack of any judgment whatsoever, nor probable recollection.

6. Sleeping - Sleeping may not be 'yes' but it's also not 'no'.

7. Control - Through actual control or some sort of blackmail, the 'yes' probably isn't sincere.

8. Trickery - Deceit and misrepresentation of one party to convince the other.

9. Manipulation - Bedazzle and confuse them somehow into saying yes when they normally wouldn't.

10. Wildcard - Some form of dubious consent circumstances not listed.

Memories don't come back the way the Soldier expects them to. He learns about himself secondhand through the eyes of others in the museums. There are books that have been written about James Buchanan Barnes that he reads through and knows are 150% bullshit, even if he can't entirely figure out why. Documentaries have been made about Steve Rogers and his Howling Commandos which make images flash in his mind. He doesn't remember as much as he tries to just fill in blanks. Some of it feels real and some of it doesn't. But this is his mission now. The one mission he's given himself in seven decades. And the Soldier does not fail.

It's hard to tell what is true, though. The Soldier can see something that feels like it is part of his past, but a second later can realize that it would be impossible for it to have been. Things he'd thought mix with things he saw. Dreams, imagination, reality...they all blur together. And the only things he can absolutely know for sure are the Big Facts that are able to be confirmed through outside sources: he was the only boy in a family of four. He was closest to his sister Becca. His best friend his whole life was Steve Rogers. He was drafted, captured, rescued, and fell off a train. The rest is half-filled in pictures that drive him to madness with their incompleteness. But he's working on it. And there's one key to it all that got harder and harder to ignore:

Steve.

The Soldier had been watching his once-friend closely for a few weeks now. These blurry pictures are getting both clearer and more confusing by the day when it comes to him. He seems to remember the two of them curled up in a bed. There is fuzzy, dream-like memories of the skinny boy on his back, underneath him, flushed and panting. Other memories of him with girls on the dance floor and a burning need to grab him and pull him away, even though he couldn't. They're torturing him. Every time he watches Steve talk to the veteran with the wings. Every time he talks to the red-headed spy. The Soldier has more of these flashes that nearly choke him with the first semblance of emotion he's had in a lifetime. And he has no idea what is real and what isn't, but he's beginning to care less and less.

It finally all comes to a head after the night when he has his first dream. It's just as fractured and hazy as everything else in his mind, but the constant is Steve. In all of his forms, there is Steve. And the dream makes it clear that there was more to them than was just in the books. Or maybe he had hoped there was? Or had thought Steve hoped they would be? He wakes up confused but with an undercurrent of longing both for what had occurred in the dreams as well as for the fog to pass away and to leave him with 'Bucky' once more. Not this in between creature he's become that doesn't know what he even wants anymore. Doesn't know who he was or who he is.

It's barely four in the morning when Bucky makes his decision. Steve's apartment is secured but he's The Winter Soldier. It takes all of a second to make his way in through the window and to pad into what must be the bedroom.

He stands in the doorway and watches. He's lost the human knowledge of what to do next. How to touch when it's not to wound. He has the dream and those vague images but he has no idea if they've ever actually happened. So he watches and tries to remember. Tries to separate the fake from the real. And he can't. He really can't.

But maybe actually doing this will be what he needs...
