just in time for halloween!

Becoming the Costume

Up until just a minute ago everything seemed normal enough. Perhaps you were at a costume party, surrounded by guests, decorations, and refreshments. Or were you just trying a costume on at the shop? Maybe you were out trick-or-treating, backstage at a theatrical performance, or just seeing how you look in a costume that mysteriously appeared in your closet.

Whatever was going on, something just suddenly changed. That costume you were wearing? Is what you now are.

Now you're no longer a person in a costume— you're another person. Or a monster. Or a space alien. Or a zombie. Or any of a multitude of other things— some strange, some frightening, and some just, well. Unfortunate.

HOW IT WORKS:
♦ Leave a comment with your character's name and fandom, and state any preferences. If you'd like to roll for/pick an option here, go for it.
♦ Tag another character. Pick one of the options, either by using the RNG or just selecting one that interests you.
♦ Play out the results and respect others' preferences.
♦ Have fun!

1) Fantasy - Fairy tale characters or literal fairies, knights or princesses, dragons or unicorns? Anything that belongs in a storybook would fit in this category.

2) Sci-Fi - Aliens, astronauts, androids, oh my! Someone from another planet, or maybe this one a few centuries from now.

3) Occupational - This includes any costume for a particular occupation, be it a doctor, construction worker, maid, police officer, teacher, or soldier.

4) Historical - Costumes from any era from the beginning of time until the present day. Caveman furs? Togas? Victorian ruffles? Or perhaps you have some disco fever.

5) Scary - Ghosts and goblins, witches and black cats, or maybe a blood-covered ax murderer? Or maybe you have a different definition of "scary" and dressed as a tax collector, who knows.

6) Animals - This could range anywhere from gaining animalistic ears and tails to a full-on transformation, depending on how elaborate your costume was to begin with.

7) Pirates - It's time to swash some buckles, raid, pillage, and plunder.

8) Angels and Demons - This one is... fairly self-explanatory. But are you one of the demons that looks demonic, or perhaps an angel interested only in smiting the wicked?

9) Circus - Any clowns that don't fit in the "Scary" category would go here, as would animal tamers, trapeze artists, or perhaps one of the more elaborate Cirque du Soleil style costumes.

10) Cosplay - Your character was dressed as another fictional character from any medium. Let's hope they don't run into that actual character, or else we'll have some real meta going down here.

11) Wildcard - Pick an option not listed here!

Nothing, except an exceedingly heightened sense of justice and a little more ambition to chase after you be-suited trouble-makers. No magical powers, no super strength. Perhaps a little less patience for theatricality. Ha!]

[Okay, so it may have only been a dare from Junpei that he was in this costume to begin with, but a Fool does not back down from a challenge, even if that challenge consisted of hairband-ears, face paint, paw gloves, furry clothes, and a bushy fox tail. Even going with Mitsuru to a party dressed in this getup wasn't enough to get him to back down.]

[Besides, once he had it all on, it was kind of comfortable. Almost oddly so. Even the hairband felt natural.]

[Junpei had attempted to suggest that Mitsuru didn't need to find a costume for the party and should just wear a particular revealing set of armor, but an icy look had quelled him (temporarily, at least, and in her presence). She had, however, allowed herself to be persuaded by Yukari to choose something that complimented Minato's costume, and dressed as a kitsune maiden.

It wasn't that unusual for her to wear kimono, Mitsuru told herself firmly as she approached their designated meeting point. The addition of the accessories wouldn't make much of a difference. And in fact, she hardly seemed to notice them now that they were in place-- perhaps it just took a minute to adjust, and the rest of the night she would be fine. But even so there was just a hint of self-conscious color staining her cheeks under the carefully-applied makeup, despite her efforts at controlling her expression.]

[Minato feels kind of silly once he spots her, his mostly comical-looking costume next to her actually looking good in hers. Oh well. Too late to change now.]

Wow, you look great. makes me feel under-dressed.

[His tail may or may not have flicked back and forth in greeting. Probably just a trick of the light. It was a bit dark out here already.]

[The compliment does quite a bit to erase that trace of uncertainty, and Mitsuru smiles just slightly in acknowledgment. In what might have been another trick of the low light, the fur-tipped ears peeking from her hair seem to flick once and prick up more alertly.]

[It had taken quite a bit of persuasion, but Chie had finally convinced Yukiko to wear the devil costume that matched her own chosen angel outfit. Now however, as Yukiko hovers at the edge of the party, self-consciously tugging down the hem of her skirt and watching in vain for any sight of her friend, she's having third and even fourth thoughts about the wisdom of agreeing.]

[One minute Shirley had been checking on the amount of punch left in the bowl while trying not to bump anyone with the wings of her fairy costume, the next she was about six inches tall and fluttering those wings madly to keep from falling into the bowl.]

option b: historical
[Prehistoric people probably didn't wear outfits that resembled strategically designed fur bikinis, but Milly had always been more concerned with appearance than accuracy. Shirley had learned it was best not to argue.]

option c: animal
[The puppy costume had been cute, and she'd received a number of compliments on it at the party, but now it was starting to feel strange. The ears seemed to be stuck, and when Shirley tried to pull off the paw mittens she discovered that they didn't come off...]

option d: wildcard
[She'd been dressed up in an elaborately ruffled dress, her makeup carefully applied to make her look like a porcelain doll. And now she lies where she'd collapsed, delicate and beautiful in frozen perfection but for the still too-human eyes.]
