The Dating Meme

Dating is, when you think about, really weird. It's a totally different thing for different people. Some are friends for years before they date; others start dating on the same day they met. Sometimes, there's a lot mushy stuff involved; other times, the couple acts just like friends. None of this is necessarily right or wrong.

Whatever it is, your character and the character you reply to are now dating. How? That's up to you. Whether it be awkward or not, the relationship will be uniquely theirs.

1. Best Friends to More: Oh, wow, you've been this person's friend forever! But then you realize you have feelings for them, and they for you. Will things change when you change your status?

2. The Sudden Decision: Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy, but here I am, date me maybe?

3. Confession: You've had feelings for this person for, like, ages, and you want to ask them to date you. Or maybe the confession just slips out...
4. Hate Date: You really don't like this person; actually, you hate them. But you don't want them to be with anyone else!
5. I Guess We're Dating: Huh. We are dating, aren't we? Everyone else knew before us...
6. Slow Decision: For the more mature and seasoned, they might fall into something sweet without needing to rush.
7. Been Burned Before: One of you has had a bad relationship, and now both of you have to bear that brunt if you want to date now.
8. Innocence: This is your first real relationship, so you have to figure it out together. That's harder than it looks.
9. Courting: You're from an old-fashioned world or are old-fashioned yourself, so it's courting, not dating. Still, maybe you can sneak away from the chaperon.
10. First Date: Your first true date. What's it like? What would happen if...I don't know...it went bad?
11. First Kiss: Of course.
12. First Time: Together or in general.
13. The Perfect Couple: The couple that never argues and is more like best friends than a couple.
14. The Not-So-Perfect Couple: Ugh, these guys always argue and seem to despise each other. Why are they even together?
15. Comfortable: You can do anything around or in front of your honey.
16. Not Cut Out for Dating: One of you is anti-social, a jerk, a stoic badass, whatever. You're not dating material...yet here you are.
17. Getting on Each Others' Nerves: Spending too much time together can get even the most patient people annoyed with the person they're dating.
18. Know What You Like: It's almost like they can read your mind, whether it be in the kitchen, at the store, or in the bedroom.
19. Trouble in Paradise: Maybe it's external factors, or perhaps internal, but whatever the case may be, things aren't looking so sunny.

20. Test the Strength: Someone else has an obvious crush on the person you're dating. What do you do?
21. Pregnancy Scare: Hey, it happens. So, how do you feel when the period turns up missing?
22. Getting Serious: Things are getting way deep with this person. They may be the one...or maybe they think they are, while you're not too sure.
23. Old Hat: This relationship is dull. Can you get back the spark?
24. End It: You don't want to date them anymore. You want to see other people.
25. Taking It to the Next Level: You don't want to date them anymore. You want to marry them.

[This was the third time the older gentleman at the table next to his had given him a look for doing something irritating and Peter sighed as he mumbled yet another apology. He forced his fingers he'd been nervously drumming on the table to stop and tucked them around his coffee mug. It took more effort than it should not to start the repetitive tapping in his foot like he had earlier but he was pretty sure the man might start through punches or sugar packets if he did that again.

Why was he nervous? He was waiting on a date to arrive. A date he hadn't met in person yet and hadn't seen a picture of, but that was cool, he could totally not be one of those vain guys who wouldn't give someone a chance just because of looks, right? Right. Totally. The Yankees baseball cap on the table was the symbol, which now seemed really stupid.

The other reason he was nervous? He'd lied. Why had he even done that? He didn't know! The guy sounded so interesting and smart and twenty-one had sounded so much better than eighteen. It was practically the same age in the grand scheme of things. Like what was a couple years to someone like Thor? Nothing! So what if he couldn't drink or go to certain night clubs or rent a car.. this was such a bad idea.]

The Howling Commandos are three for three for each HYDRA target given to them, leaving behind a smoldering wreck each time without any causalities on thier side. Even Colonel Phillips is looking a little like he's lost ten years off his life in a few days thanks to Steve going off solo: each mission has been a soaring success, even with a green Captain leading them. Steve's got a real knack for the whole leadership thing. It's when they're resting before the next one, waiting for intel to get back when Agent Carter invites them both to dinner. Dinner. Like a woman like Agent Carter does a simple dinner.

Bucky thinks about finding a reason out of it. It's tempting. Real tempting to let Steve and Agent Cart- Peggy have this dinner together, even if he's thinking it's not supposed to be a date. Come on, the two of them after they were looking at each other like the rest of the bar didn't exist that night? Seems pretty clear that they both got a thing for each other. Anything that's gotta do with the Commandos, Steve can always relay back to him.

When he'd mentioned that to Steve - possibly leaving the two of them to it - Steve had given him that frozen look like he'd been caught in the headlights. The guy who wasn't afraid of anyone back in New York even when they were twice his size and packing a mean right hook, the guy who wasn't afraid of wading first into the hail of bullets had no idea what to do with being left alone with Carter.

So Bucky caves and decides to go with. This time he doesn't have a jacket hanging off him two sizes too big, and he doesn't look barely pulled together. When he arrives, Bucky's taken the time to dress a little more sharply, hair slicked back with pomade and uniform recently pressed as he finds the booth that Peggy's got staked out. Bucky slides in, setting his hat to rest on his knee.

The spot besides him is empty. Steve's never late - especially if he's all nerves over a dame. Bucky glances at the empty seat with a faint little frown, "Steve get held up or something, Agent?"

Bucky Barnes is nearly a hundred years old. Not only that, but one of the few things all of his biographers got right was that he had always been popular with dames. They missed how he made time with some fellas, too, but that is actually just proof of how well he hid that fact.

Regardless, this all just goes to show that Bucky is a professional at dating. Not only that, but he and Steve had gone through the motions of dates more times than he could count; they had hundreds of trips going out for dinner, thousands of times getting drinks, even a few movies when they could afford it (or he could convince Steve to sneak in).

So, with all of that, it would be logical to say Bucky is experienced in dating, if not additionally and specifically in dating Steve. Sure, they've never had an official date before, but that has to just be semantics. And semantics aren't cause for nerves. Right?

Well. Apparently not.

Bucky stands in the center of his Wakandan hut, staring at the mirror. He's got nice pants on, a dark shirt that almost looks like something he'd wear in the 40's, and he's actually made an effort with his hair. Or, he had. He's been running his hand through it for the last ten minutes, debating whether he should put on his temporary arm or not, so now it's starting to look wild again.

He doesn't care.

This date had been suggested on one of their Skype sessions almost two weeks ago. Then he'd been all charm and all bluster to hide just how fucking incredible and shocking it was that Steve wanted to do this too. But now that the date is here, all that is drained away and nothing but nerves remains. Even though he can't pinpoint exactly why he is so anxious.

Maybe it is because, if he fucks this up, he is fucking up the only good thing he has in his life anymore. Or, even if he doesn't fuck it up, he's dramatically altering the parameters of how they relate to each other. And what if he's alright with that and Steve decides he's not? Or the other way around? What if this all is just a bad idea? What if Steve changed his mind?

There's just countless ways this could ruin their friendship. And, shit. Why didn't he consider that before?

"Holy shit."

He bends forward, telling himself for the umpteenth time that this is fine. That this is more than fine. That Steve wants this and he wants this. And it's going to be great.

He's 98 years old, damnit. He's 98 years old and a super-soldier POW. He can handle a stupid date.

He scrubs his hand over his face, groaning loud.

"Shit. What the fuck am I doing?"
