The Historical AU Meme

The glory of Rome! The pageantry of medieval times! The etiquette of the Regency era! The glamour of the twenties, the free-wheeling of the seventies, and - of course - the final frontier of the future.

R U L E S:

1. Post your character! Name and series in the subject line.

2. Find someone to play with! Use the RNG for a time period and situation.

3. Make excellent choices!

O P T I O N S:

1) Greco-Roman - Togas! Tunics! Gladiatorial fights and getting stabbed right in the forum! (And that's really sensitive, you know.) Maybe you're in the recently-conquered Londinium, or maybe you've made your home in Pompeii and ... hey, do you hear that?

2) Medieval - Jousting! Pointy hats! Castles! Dormice inside of a rabbit inside of a chicken inside of a duck inside of a swan inside of a pig inside of a cow! Are you royalty, a peasant, or something in between?

3) Renaissance - It's a time of discovery and revelation! New scientific breakthroughs are being made every day, and incredible literature and poems are being written all the time. Perhaps you've made your home in Venice, and you're adding to the flow of progress - or fighting against it.

4) Victorian/Edwardian - Everything is repressed and a series of gestures with a fan can make or break a hopeful suitor's night. There are balls and salons and ridiculously thorough rules of etiquette. Are you solving mysteries with Sherlock Holmes or drinking absinthe in a bar by the Moulin Rouge?

5) 1920s - Flappers! Prohibition! Everyone's dancing the Charleston and watching these new silent movies. That is, unless they've escaped to Paris to drink a lot and write about the human condition. Do you party like the world's about to end or ponder what would happen if it did?

6) 1950s - Are you willing to leave it to Beaver? It's the time of adorable housedresses, three-martini lunches, and everyone owning a brand new refrigerator - on credit! Gee whiz, it sure is great, isn't it?

...wait, what was that about nuclear bombs?

7) 1970s - Disco! Margaret Thatcher! Drugs! The '70s are a time of social upheaval and change, not to mention leisure suits. Are you at the forefront of feminism or busting a move at the discotheque?

8) Present day - it's now! Everyone's got an iPhone and a Facebook and are constantly Twittering about their MySpace. People are more connected than ever, and the world is growing smaller and smaller every day.

9) The future! - The final frontier! Are we colonizing Mars or exploring the galaxy in a big, groovy spaceship? Have we made first contact yet? Has someone finally gotten around to inventing Holodecks? If you can dream it, maybe it's happened!

10) Got a different/better idea? Some time or place I didn't think of? This is for you!

S C E N E S:

1) Having a meal! With your family, your significant other, your best friend. Is it fit for a king or what you've managed to scrounge together from what's left?

2) A night's entertainment! Going to see a show at the Globe Theater, taking in a movie, or watching a troupe of performers put on a passion play - either way, it won't be a dull night.

3) Courting! Maybe you're in an arranged marriage, or necking in the backseat of your best guy's T-Bird at the drive-in movie theater.

4) School! Are you learning from Miss Emmeline at a one-room schoolhouse, taking notes on Latin from the tutor your father hired, or at a British boarding school?

5) It's a party! Maybe you're having a hell of a time at Studio 54 or giggling behind your fan at a ball with your best friend while you wait for the boys you like to ask you to dance.

6) Political intrigue! Is someone trying to stage a coup for your throne? Is your political rival trying to knock you out of the Senate?

7) Rivals! Maybe you're two lords fighting over the same eligible lady, or maybe he's picked on you since you were both kids growing up on the same block.

8) Family! You've got kids now, or maybe you are the kids. Perhaps you're out from dawn till dusk tilling the fields, or your biggest concern is making sure your daughters marry well.

9) Market day! Are you at the mall checking out the newest saddle shoes and cuffed denim? Are you making your way to the nearest town with sheep and cows to sell?

10) Got something better? Want to combine a couple of these? Go for it!

[het for romance. i kind of have an inclination towards the renaissance era (if only because of the '1602' series and earth-311), but i'm ota.]

{{ Not even remotely in the same canon, unfortunately, but I will totally do Renaissance, or even something just 1602-ish period because... well, damn. Rojhaz and Murdock, my darlings and hearts. Also Petros. Anyways, I can understand if you want to stick to Marvel muses, but if your open for anything, I'd love to do something. }}

gotcha.

The government's finally gotten over its fear of genetic engineering and moved past that unbearably slow selective breeding technique. It's mostly fatter cows and dogs with thumbs, nothing to be really concerned with. The legislation known as the "Planet of the Apes Law" is still in effect to prevent anyone from raising already-intelligent mammals up to human levels of sapience.

But senators can't be expected to know that mammals aren't the only smart creatures on the planet. Designed to repair delicate underwater machinery, the first batch of enhanced octopodes were encouraged towards dog-like ability to follow instructions and ape-like problem solving skills, along with drastically increased lifespans. They were even given artificial voiceboxes to allow them basic communication.

The experiment never got beyond the first batch. It's been hushed up, there's no public record of the experiment and everyone involved has been silenced by lawyers. There was no Kraken Project and there are no uplifted cephalopods, especially none that managed to escape their cages and flee to the safety of the ocean.

Of course they're not just in the ocean anymore. Hermes is third generation, even more adept than the first batch of simpletons, and his problem-solving skills have taken him beyond submarine repair all the way to master programmer and hacker-for-hire. On the net he hides his tracks well, and in the real world he lurks behind the inkcloud of a 'owner' who doesn't question where the money and drugs keep coming from. In every way he's made himself as well-hidden in the human world as his color-changing ancestors did on the ocean floor.

Unless someone very smart has gone to the business of tracking him down.

[His name is Philip Norry, except for the part where it isn't. Vladik would find the irony amusing if he didn't have so much riding on the deep need that no one ever, ever discover that his family changed its name on the way over from Russia. Too blinded by their enthusiasm at finding some sort of 'Commie detector', the American government has overlooked his background in favor of his psychic abilities...and if he'd refused he doesn't doubt they'd have dug deep to find out why he'd betray his country so cruelly.

So here he is, staring across the police interrogation table at a Mr. Sherlock Holmes. Vladik's best guess is that he's done something to stick out and annoy the government, but he's not sure. He won't be sure unless he digs his fingers right into Sherlock's brain and yanks the information out by force.

And he won't. He's taken oaths, same as any physician, do no harm with what talent and training has given you...and if lying to the government's the best way to go about it, so be it.]

[There's nothing particularly wrong with Dr. Brutenholm's family tree. He just has a tendency towards very, very odd children. The eldest is a tall, broad-shouldered brutish man with a penchant for cigars and kittens. He is not in attendance tonight and the only man unhappy for it is his younger brother Abraham.

Abraham himself is thin to the point of freakishness, with long fingers and large eyes. He is educated in the best of ways, particularly in history and foreign cultures, but no book makes up for a complete lack of socialization.

'Go dance, Abraham!' says Father, as if it were as easy as translating a text from Old English. Abe walks stiffly across the room, meeting the gaze of potential partners and then turning away as cowardice overtakes him. Finally he decides to simply pick one at random, take his rejection with grace, and use it as an excuse to hide in the library for the rest of the party. He approaches a woman with gorgeous auburn hair and gives her a slight bow.]

The best choice of occupation for a woman of Alice's age and breeding would be 'wife and mother'. Unfortunately circumstances have made her extremely unsuitable for such a career. Even with all advocating family wiped out and the dark shadow of her institutionalization hanging over her, she had no interest in it. There had been enough trusting her fate to others. She would take the harder life over the softer cage. Alice takes a job as cook and servant to a small family with a small house and little interest in references she cannot give. The wife is sweet but dull, the child knows respect, and the father who doesn't notice that Alice keeps sneaking into his study to look at his designs for new machinery.

She's out picking herbs for the kitchen when she sees the woman's coach approach the house. Alice's hands pause in the dirt. She watches it pass with a steady, apathetic gaze, waiting until she's stopped at the house before bowing her head to her work again. Another for dinner, then.
