Alec wasn't sure what they'd been celebrating. Probably a mission that had turned out better than expected, no injuries. No missteps or errors that could be used against them later. The Clave wasn't even complaining about him being 'too friendly' with the Downworld. Maybe that had been it. That alone was worth getting a little tipsy over.
Maia had convinced him to try some new drink that hadn't even tasted like it had any alcohol in it... Which should have warned Alec that he really shouldn't have had so many of them. Somehow he ended up in the loft, wandering the rooms to find Magnus, pouting when he realized his boyfriend wasn't there. Eventually he managed to get his shirt and boots off before sprawling on the bed, humming to himself while he waited for Magnus to come home.
Magnus knows he's there as soon as he gets close enough. His wards are strong and they only let those people in that he allows. Alexander is one of those people so to know that he was there, waiting, pleased Magnus.
He'd been out with Catarina, catching up with her about all the sick mundanes (there was an outbreak of mad cow disease apparently, ew gross), and if she'd gone out on any dates (sadly no but Magnus was determined to set her up).
So, he's content when he comes home and that feeling just grows with knowing Alexander is there.
The loft is mostly quiet when he steps inside. Magnus pauses and listens, stifling a laugh when he realizes the sound he's hearing is humming. He discard his boots by the door and then tiptoes towards his bedroom, stopping at the doorway to take in the scene of his tall boyfriend, sprawled across his bed.
There were very few things that were better than seeing Alexander looking so comfortable in Magnus' bed.
Even if he wasn't drunk, he probably wouldn't have heard Magnus without using a rune. His boyfriend is sneaky like that, which Alec might have muttered under his breath when he finally notices that someone was in the doorway. He knows that it had to be Magnus or someone that Alec could trust. The wards wouldn't let anyone else into the loft. The humming, which had been switching between classical pieces shifted to something from one of the Disney movies Clary had insisted they watch on movie night.
He gives Magnus a little wave, lifting his head up to smile at his boyfriend before getting comfortable again. "Yeah. Boring mission. The Clave isn't complaining and now you're home." He starts humming again, one of the Disney songs instead of classical, while trying to think of what he should be asking Magnus. "How's Cat?"
"She's fine, darling," Magnus says, padding over to the bed and taking a seat beside Alec. He reaches out and pushes his shirt up the tiniest bit so he can slowly stroke back and forth across the wonderful abs that Magnus dreams out.
"Is that from the Lion King?" He's pretty sure Alexander is humming something from a Disney movie and if Magnus weren't already in love with him, that would have done it.
"Could you be anymore adorable?" he asks rhetorically. "I don't think so."
"Wasn't she treating people with some weird disease?" he asks, making a face at the thought. He can't remember what it was but it'd sounded terrible. Something about brains. Alec tries to think of which disease it was but Magnus keeps distracting him with his hands under his shirt. He manages a half-hearted glare but he shivers slightly, ruining the effect.
"It is. Clary said we were depraved - " No, that isn't right. "Deprived because we hadn't seen it as kids. I liked it better than Frozen or Up."
Alec might not be able to glare, but he does scrunch up his nose at his boyfriend. "Shadowhunters are not adorable."
"Mad cow disease. It's not all that weird but definitely serious," Magnus confirms with a bob of his head and a bit of a rake of his nails down Alec's abs. Oops, was he being distracting? Oh well.
"But no, you're not depraved. I'm the depraved one of the two of us," he jokes, smiling down at Alexander once again. "And this particular Shadowhunter is the most adorable thing I've seen in the entirety of my long life. I'm truly blessed to be a witness to this."
"How can a brain eating disease not be weird?" Maybe not by Magnus' standards. There are probably stranger, magical diseases out there like the demon pox Jace talks about sometimes, but it's weird to Alec.
Biting his lip to keep from reacting too obviously to Magnus' distraction, he reached up to play with one of Magnus' necklaces. "Some people would think I'm depraved. I seduced you the first time." It hadn't been the best attempt, but it'd worked. "I'm too grumpy looking to be adorable. Unless I'm like that cat Simon keeps showing me pictures of." The cat is cute, even if he never admits it to Simon.
"Why are you so interested in this disease and not the fact that I'm touching you?" Magnus hums, stretching himself out on the bed beside Alec to make the touching for the both of them easier.
"You're not depraved, Alexander," Magnus promises, brushing a feather light kiss against his cheek. "You're perfect. You're absolutely perfect, grumpiness and all."
And it was true, Alexander did remind him of the grumpy cat sometimes but that didn't make him any less beautiful.
Making a pleased sound when his boyfriend began to move, he lets go of the necklace, shifting so he can rest his chin on Magnus' shoulder. "'M trying to be a good boyfriend." Being good means he can try to touch Magnus, which is more complicated than Alec assumes since he can't quite figure out how buttons work.
"I don't mind if I am." But perfect doesn't sound right, not to describe him. It might not be correct, but it causes his face to feel too warm. He shouldn't be blushing over a simple compliment. By the Angel he'd stopped blushing years ago. Or tried to. "You're the one that's perfect. Thought it the first time I saw you. No, the second time. The first I was busy trying to save you."
"You don't even have to try, Alexander," Magnus murmurs, pressing a kiss to the crown of his head and sighing. When he realizes that Alec is fumbling a bit with his buttons, he peels the shirt off and tosses it aside before laying back down, letting his necklaces fall against the bare skin of his chest.
"And a wonderful job you did at saving me," Magnus croons, laughing. "Just think, this could have all been very different if your brother had been the one to come up behind me instead of you."
No, it wouldn't have been that different. He would have thanked Jace begrudgingly and then been absolutely smitten when he'd set his eyes on Alec later.
Letting out huff when his pillow begins to move, Alec sits up enough to let Magnus take off his shirt, stealing a kiss before resuming his previous position. "Yes, I do. If it's important you have to try. If you don't, you don't deserve to have it." Alec still isn't sure that he deserves Magnus, but he's going to do everything he can think of to be a good boyfriend.
He almost wishes he could take back the kiss when Magnus suggests being interested in Jace instead of him. His expression turns briefly stricken before he tells himself that Magnus would have flirted with Jace if he'd been interested in him. Magnus wouldn't have called Alec the pretty boy if he hadn't believed it. "You'd be fighting Clary for him."
Slowly his hand creeps from Magnus' side to draw random patterns along his boyfriend's chest. "My favorite Warlock. Even when I was a kid you were my favorite." Was that weird? Probably.
"Don't look like that, my darling," Magnus says, drawing his finger along the plump line of Alec's lips, trying to turn that look back into a smile, back into the easy look he'd been wearing almost this entire time.
"There isn't a place in this world, a time that could have existed or anything like that where I would have preferred Jace over you," Magnus tells him, leaning down and pressing a kiss to his cheek. "There isn't anything that would make that happen. There is only one Shadowhunter for me."
And he was being adorably drunk in Magnus' bed right now. "I was really your favorite when you were young? I would have thought that someone else a little less...intense would have been a favorite."
Usually Alec could push aside his self-doubts when he was near Magnus, but the alcohol made it easier for those thoughts to intrude. Jace had always been the one everyone was drawn too, which had been part of the reason why Alec had been so happy when Magnus noticed him instead. That and the strange, wonderful feeling that had settled in his chest when they'd met.
The alcohol also made it easier for Alec to be distracted, smiling at Magnus' coaxing and the kiss. "Does that mean in every world, we'd find each other?" It's a silly thing he isn't sure he'd say if they weren't curled up together with Alec humming songs about love and dreams. "Fate and true love like in the fairy tales?"
Drawing a shape star along Magnus' shoulder, he nodded. "There's a picture of you in the Codex. I didn't know who you were back then. I was just a kid, but I thought your warlock mark was pretty. I didn't realize it was you until later." Thankfully. It'd be weird if Alec had noticed the connection before they'd started dating. "I liked that you had to be intense - powerful - to do the spells it showed."
"I had no idea you were such a romantic, Alexander Lightwood," Magnus croons, unable to stop himself from learning forward and pressing light, soft kisses into the skin of Alec's long neck. He pays particular attention to the deflect rune, restraining himself from biting down on it and marking his boyfriend like a teenager.
"But I will make you this promise. No matter where you are and no matter where I am, if we exist in the same universe, I will find you and I will love you until the end of time," he murmurs fiercely. "Just try and stop me."
"Had to hide it." Izzy probably was the only one that had known about that particular trait when he was growing up. Jace may have guessed from the poetry books that sometimes ended up in Alec's room, but it'd been a carefully guarded trait whenever the eldest Lightwoods were at the Institute. "The future Head of the Institute can't be a romantic." But the current Head of the Institute could now that he knows he doesn't have to hide.
Shivering, Alec can't quite hold back a moan when Magnus focuses on the deflect rune. "You'll always be my great love." Sliding his fingers into Magnus' hair, he considered his next words carefully, or as carefully as he could while still buzzing from the drinks Maia had given him. "Every reality and every lifetime. I'll always find my way back to you, Magnus. You may have to wait, but I will find you."
"The future Head of the Institute can be anything he wants to be," Magnus murmurs against his skin, tracing the lines of the deflect rune with his tongue. It's a convenient way to hide how those words affect him, how he wants to cling to Alec and just never let him go. How he wants to cry because the people who'd felt that way about him could be counted on one hand.
"Alexander, you have such a way with words when you want to," Magnus whispers, shaken. "I hope you don't say those kinds of things to everyone because I'm going to get jealous."
If Magnus keeps teasing that rune, Alec is going to start making noises he'll be embarrassed over later. Tipping his head back, he slides his hands lower, lingering at Magnus' hips, unsure if anything else would be welcome. Making out when Alec's drunk is one thing... Magnus may worry about consent for anything else. And it might be with the way Magnus seems to be reacting to the things Alec's saying, this might be all he needs right now.
"The future Head of the Institute has exactly what he wants." Which is probably something no one has ever said to Magnus. With all the lovers, with someone like Camille as one of those lovers, Alec doubts anyone really told Magnus how special he is. No one ever wanted forever or lifetimes with Magnus the way Alec does. "I've never said them to anyone else." Not even Jace when they'd been nervous teenagers discussing soul bonds and parabatai rituals. "There's no one to be jealous of, Magnus. You're the one I'll always search for."
Though Magnus isn't stopping anything at the moment, he's well aware of Alec's condition and he's probably not going to let things go too far when Alec's drunk. Even if they're together and Magnus would make sure to take care of him while he was drunk, he'd still wants to make sure Alec is always in his right frame of mind when they're together.
"I have lived hundreds of years," Magnus whispers, tracing the shell of Alec's ear with his tongue, "and never have I felt with anyone like I do with you."
It's impossible to describe what that feeling is, how it overwhelms and consumes him but it's there. When he wakes up, when he goes to sleep, all the time.
He shivers, hand tightening on Magnus' hip, trying to focus on something other than having his boyfriend close and how much he loves him. It reminds him of the silly movies that Clary insisted that they watch and the poetry he'd hidden in his room. All the grand things he'd wanted to say but always held back. Then he realizes that he doesn't have it. Magnus is right and he doesn't have to pretend. He can say the things that always want to tumble out but he thinks he shouldn't put into words.
"Would you want a hundred years with me?" It's something he'd never ask if he wasn't so relaxed, drunk from alcohol and feeling Magnus' skin beneath his hands. "Not me finding you over and over." He swallows hard, eyes sliding closed as he searches for meaning while being distracted by Magnus and feelings he'd been told he could never have. "A hundred years together?"
"Darling, I want a thousand years with you," Magnus murmurs fiercely into his ear. He curls himself around Alec, one arm and leg draped over his body as he pulls himself closer and lines kisses up and down his neck.
"I would never get bored of you. I can never get enough," he promises, shaking his head. "I would be more afraid that you would see better things in the world than I. But, never doubt that I wouldn't tire of you. Because I won't. It is an impossibility."
