1. Holiday Festivities - Fourth of July? Diwali? Guy Fawkes Night? There are plenty of big annual events involving fireworks. Which one are you at?


2. End of the Night - You've just finished a long day at an amusement park, or maybe it's the last baseball game of the week. Whatever public venue you're at is about to wind down for the night, and it's going out with a bang.


3. Your Own Personal Arsenal - Who needs holidays? You've got Roman candles and bottle rockets to spare and an open space to set them off in. Of course, if they're illegal in your area you might want to watch out for cops...


4. You're In Trouble Now - Something just blew up that wasn't supposed to or wasn't expected. The fireball's pretty sweet, but maybe you should see about putting it out now. Or running, running works too.


5. Attack the Block - All that stands between you and the big nasties is the supply for your own personal pyrotechnic display. Good thing somebody's got a lighter!

[ the sky explodes above them, bursts of riotous color. and the rockets' red glare.
moments in the present pause, split their frames, and steve falls back into memories haphazardly.

sneaking over the fence, a couple of rowdy willful teenagers, climbing up the metal facing at the rear of the stadium with bucky's help, all the way to the top. they huddle up, kick back, watch the fireworks — bathed in the brightest lights, they have the best seats in the house and they didn't pay a dime. bucky's arm slung across his shoulders; he couldn't feel more at home, or safe, or free than in that moment. this is the top of the world. their world. he hasn't been sick in a month and he can almost pretend that more nights can wind up like this, the two of them soaking in a raucous celebration despite the rest of the universe threatening to go to shit. that look on his mother's face, drawn around the edges, slightly grey. hitching himself closer into bucky's side and laughing as his best friend points at one particularly outrageous display, the finale almost there, he can almost pretend.

he can almost pretend, knee deep in mud in a ditch in france, that the shell blasts in his ears are those fireworks from when he was a kid, long before he was a captain. he ducks down low and winces though, eyes reddening, damp, because the sound is off — it's always followed by a cacophony of screams, the telltale sound of men being tossed in the air, blown apart before they even touch back down, their blood soiling the wet earth beneath them. there's no finale; the blasts keep coming, keep killing, and he's waiting for the right window to lead a charge, but nothing's open, nothing's right — he can't march the commandos into certain death. bucky's still beside him, sniper rifle engaged; he takes out targets no typical soldier could see, he's so well trained, poised like a jaguar. another shell blast; the enemy's got too much cover. they glance at each other at exactly the same moment, they've never not been in complete sync. then a whistling through the air, and a blinding, burning white—

white, red, blue.

bucky's still beside him. it's two lifetimes later. he squints through the glare of the celebration above, suddenly too bright, too familiar. they'd meant to spend a quiet rooftop evening just enjoying the show in anonymity, life restored, if you could call it that. the urge to hitch himself to bucky's side to make sure they're both still in one piece is so visceral he almost gasps.

instead, he jerks out of his chair and moves stiffly, aiming for the balcony door. ]

Back on earth, everyone's got things to do. Families to reconnect with mostly. Everyone has a family who missed them.

Everyone but Keith and Allura, really. Both of their families, what was left of them, were in the stars with them. No more or less alone on earth. That makes for a lot of free time for Keith to be the one to give Allura a crash course on earth culture.

This is probably not the best plan.

"You really didn't have fireworks on Altea?" Keith asks, hefting the cardboard box out from the cellar it was stashed away in. He'd already picked out the fireworks that were damaged by water leakage, and it wasn't like a firefighter parent was going to have particularly dangerous ones at their disposal, but seeing as they lived in the middle of a desert it also wasn't like they lived in an area where setting them off was a fire hazard.
