the only clothes peter has in space are what he has on his back, literally, which is the spider suit. which isn't, like, uncomfortable or anything, but not the kind of clothes he's ready to wear for days at a time, you know? and when the benatar's on course to dock at xandar soon, he maybe wants to show up there as peter parker, not spider-man. not yet spider-man, anyway.

which means...which means he needs something else to wear.

the other peter's clothes end up being his best bet. drax is, like, enormous -- it's awesome -- and rocket's, you know, a raccoon. mantis offered him a spare dress in all seriousness, and it was actually very sweet of her? but not his, y'know, style. gamora's the one who suggests the peters share, and she's right. (not surprisingly.) peter's still swimming in one of star-lord's shirts and pants as he ventures out of the room he'd changed in, pant legs rolled up some, with a dubious slant to his mouth, but it's...well, better than the alternatives.

(also? it's space clothes. and that's awesome.) ]

Steve picked his way through the wiggling ocean of fur, bending to scoop one that was in danger of being smothered by it's siblings. He tucked it close to his chest, letting out a soft huff as it tried to lick his chin. This was not what he'd expected when he'd gotten her text.

This wasn't even close.

[it's been a long few months, with a string of nonstop work, tiring to the point that even gamora feels the strain. there are enough units to spare from their last job, a particularly difficult one that'd had everyone, herself included, rattled for a time afterward, and when peter suggests that they could all use a vacation, she doesn't see a reason to argue. they put their job search on hold and gather enough supplies and rations for a couple of days.

over a comm call, she asks nebula if she'd like to come along, expecting to be turned down as has she has been on countless occasions. she never expects the opposite.

ariston is quiet in the off-season (even at midday, the beach is almost deserted), but the temperatures on the planet remain pleasant enough. groot promptly runs toward the water, with mantis not terribly far behind him. peter, drax, and rocket are in a heated argument about — something some paces back, which, at the moment, leaves her and her sister alone. nebula's face has been twisted into a scowl ever since they'd arrived, and it's difficult to tell if she actually regrets accepting the invitation.

for a time, she sets up camp in silence. then:]

It's not that bad, [she says over her shoulder, as she's methodically smoothing out the edges of the blanket over the top of the sand. a small smile pulls at her mouth.] You might even like it.

[ They're in Shanghai, doing what needs doing. Clint sends updates, when he can, and Natasha never misses a birthday, so for the most part she doesn't miss America -- her loyalties have never been tied much to a sense of place. She wonders, though, if Steve does; she doesn't ask, just points out that his hair's getting long, like that's the obvious marker of where his head is at these days rather than the beard.

Across the river, a group of ex-pats have arranged for fireworks to be set-off, drunkenly singing while they take over most of the ground floor of the hotel they're staying at. You can see them from the balcony of the high-rise apartment Nat and Steve are staying in for the night, tiny colored ants below those bright, flickering lights. The apartment this side of the river is cramped and small but non-descript, just another in a sea of foreign faces. Just the way it has to be.

Natasha steps out from the kitchen, brings along two beers to the balcony outside. The weather's nice, and the sight's not terrible, but it's not home.

She hands one of the bottles to Steve. She shoots him a wry, companionable sort of smile, her shoulder lightly nudging into his. ]

Happy birthday, Rogers.
