For someone who's spent most of the afternoon fuming, Shiro's doing his best to keep a softer front for Rise. No, not a front, not really – it’s not like Shiro’s ever had to pretend he likes being around her. Despite the eight years between them, he’s known her most of his life. He still remembers a night where he managed to get Lance (who’s got the biggest crush on her of any guy he knows) into one of her concerts, and Lance shook his head after Rise’s opening performance and said something like “I can’t believe you used to babysit that!” Usually that memory makes him smile, easily. Most memories involving Rise do. Shiro might be going in a different direction with his life, but he's very proud of Rise, and it’s been nice watching her grow up. And it’s been nice to be there when she needs someone with a few extra years to show her where all the speed bumps and potholes in life are. (Literally, come to think of it – he put in a week’s practice with her for her driving test not too long ago. The way Rise handles the wheel, Shiro’s not so sure she shouldn’t be the space pilot.)

But he’s having to work at the smiles tonight. It’s…been a long night. A long, tough, emotional night, and it’s still not quite over.

Rise doesn’t want to go back to her place yet. It’s safe to by now, and Shiro knows she understands that, but he might feel similarly if he were her age. They’d actually been on the phone together when it happened, talking about maybe touring a college Rise was thinking about applying to, when someone had broken her downstairs window. Shiro can remember the alarm in her voice, and the shock, and the angry humiliation. And recalling it makes him angry, with a fury that’s unlike him. He’d barely kept it out of his tone as he ran down to his car, Rise’s voice still shaky in his ear over the phone, and driven over while she locked herself in her room.

It’s over now, at least. The police have led the guy away, and they'll find out by morning whether he was just a burglar, a pushy fan, or something worse, and if Shiro – who beat the cops there – is going to need an attorney for pancaking his nose with that punch. One more thing he’s trying not to think about tonight. Standing with Rise in her driveway afterward, seeing her arms wrapped around herself, Shiro had felt the urge to just offer his place up for the evening. She agreed, and Shiro drove her back, and didn’t begin to feel mixed about it until they were out of the car. In hindsight, it’s a…more complicated decision. It's after dark, but with all the paps Rise has to deal with every day, he can't imagine no one saw her coming back to his apartment. Even if they know each other, it’s more trouble than she really needs.

He's also engaged.

Shiro's trying not to think that matters. He'd do the same thing if Keith, or Matt, or any of his friends had been in, ah, a fight or an accident or something, and just needed some company for the night. Only…only with Rise he's - God, he doesn't want to think of the word "fixated" - aware, maybe, of her in a way he wouldn't be with any of them. Aware in a way he’s tried not to be since she became old enough that guys like Lance were starting to notice.

More than once as he cooks, Shiro has to stop those thoughts and just rub his face, fingers grinding at the faint line of stubble on his jaw, trying to remind himself of his age and their past and…well, and everything. Just hormones, he thinks, plating the last of the meal and trying not to murmur the thoughts aloud. Some protective instinct in his biology, stoked by adrenaline. That’s all. It’ll pass. It has to.

After her shower, Rise is back on his couch and has his television going. Shiro brings in a couple trays of the dinner he’s cooked up. He probably looks rough – he hasn’t changed out of his white button-up work shirt, its sleeves messily rolled up to his elbows, or the belted black khakis it’s tucked into. But Rise has seen him worse off, and if she’s in good enough spirits to tease him about looking like hell, Shiro will take that as a good sign. He gives her a tight smile and sets the trays down on the coffee table - Rise had said she didn’t want anything heavy, so Shiro just whipped together a stir fry with a little white rice and a small plate of gyōza to nibble on. The tea in the kettle is iced, a peach honey that’s one of Pidge’s favorites.

"How about that, I didn’t burn the place down." The smile’s kind of working again. Shiro sinks down onto the couch next to Rise, and wow, it feels so good just to sit down tonight. “Don’t feel like you have to eat it all. I’m sending you home with leftovers, one way or the other.”

Shiro reaches his right hand over to the tea kettle, and pours Rise a cup…and pauses. One of the knuckles of that hand is still swollen. Shiro realizes it’s the knuckle of his ring finger, and on the heels of that realization comes another. I haven’t called her tonight. Right…he’d meant to – he thinks he meant to, while Rise was showering. But he’d set the phone down on his kitchen counter, and started making dinner and tea, and had listened to the rush of hot water over Rise in the next room, and somehow it just never happened. His engagement ring flashes in the light, blinking at him like a suspicious eye. His lip twists. At length, Shiro sets the kettle down, and turns slightly at his waist to look at Rise, laying that hand gently on her elbow.

“Anything else I can get you?” His smile goes wry, and his hand brushes the back of his head with a schoolboy’s embarrassed scuff. “If some cookie dough ice cream sounds better to you, that’s basically half my freezer. Yeah…still my favorite. I know. I’m such a kid.”
