That makes him feel slightly better. Just Steve, he can handle. And yes, that surprises even him. Looking at Steve in the aftermath of everything was a hard pill to swallow, and even just talking to him isn't any easier. "Fine. I can agree to that." And honestly, he's not sure how to address the trap comment.

But he's done playing games, so as far as he's concerned, any meeting they have is going to be firmly on the up and up. Anything else is not his doing. That's not to say he'll be washing his hands of anything bad that could potentially happen; it's just that he has no ulterior motives here, unless exhaustion and wanting things to be the way they were counts.

"Prague? Interesting choice."

A breath Steve didn't realize he was holding released when Tony agreed to meet him. He was nervous yes, but not so much because he feared being double crossed...more he was afraid because he'd almost killed Tony the last time he'd seen him. He'd just wanted to stop him...not hurt him.

He chuckles lightly when Tony says Prague is interesting. "It's neutral territory to both of us. At least from my perspective. I'll text you the address."

"Okay. I'll keep an eye out. In the meantime, uh-" He trails off idly, not really sure how to finish that sentence.

Then he just chuckles dryly. "The one time I'm at a loss for words. That hardly ever happens, I'll have you know." He's certain Steve knows that without being told, but he's back to not knowing what to say, which means falling back on his typical defense mechanism of wisecracks.

"Stay safe Tony. See you in a few days." Steve says. He gives Tony enough time to either collect his thoughts and keep the conversation going or to say goodbye as well. If they do end the call, then Tony will get a text a few minutes later with an address in Prague to a pretty nice hotel with reservation dates four days out.

Steve wants to, no needs to see Tony. They had left him hurt but with a way out. Things hadn't gone well and Steve wants to make sure that his friend is alright...even though he's pretty sure he's not. None of them are.

"Yeah, you too." He pauses for a second before hanging up, almost reluctantly. It isn't as though Tony's had no contact with anyone since the last time he saw Steve, and yet he can't shake off the feeling that he's just been kind of going through the motions lately.

For whatever reason, talking to Steve has actually gotten him excited, at the same time as it's made him feel vaguely sick.

But regardless, fast forward to four days later when Tony finally lands in Prague. He makes his way to the designated hotel, and as he walks inside and crosses the lobby, he looks around for any sign of Steve.

As soon as they hang up Steve sags a little bit. He's both relieved and worried because he desperately wants to see Tony but he also is afraid to do it. He texts Tony the address of the hotel and then gets up to go prepare for the trip. He plans on getting there a day or two early to scout it out and to make contingency plans just incase something goes wrong.

Steve's in the corner near the door. When you walk in you can't see him until you're about halfway through the lobby but he can see you the moment you enter. He notes Tony is absolutely alone and then approaches him. Other than a baseball hat he's not really disguised. He's wearing a navy hoodie over a grey shirt and a pair of jeans. "Tony." He gives him a hesitant smile once they're close enough for Stark to notice and face him. "I'm glad you came."

If Steve's afraid to show up for this meeting, then that makes Tony actually petrified. Well, not outwardly; other than some added lines of tension on his face, nothing suggests he's apprehensive about meeting Steve here. Inwardly, of course, he's uncertain what is going to come of this meeting, or if it'll just simply be a long-overdue reunion.

He doubts it'll be that simple, however. When Steve makes his approach and greets him, Tony pauses before answering so he can give the other man a good once-over. "Yeah, I'm glad you did too. You look good." He also looks a little more stressed than Tony remembers him being, but aren't they all a little stressed these days?

"So, you got a room here yet, or somewhere we can talk?" If not, Tony will gladly shell out for a room.

[personal profile] cap_rogers0704 2018-08-09 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, I got a room already. Come on." Steve smiles in what he hopes is a comforting and reassuring way. Of course he's also got stress lines and his eyes dart around taking in everything around him pretty constantly but he has been looking over his shoulder the past few years.

He leads Tony to the elevators and together they ride a car up to the fourth floor. Steve leads them to his room where he uses a key card to unlock the door revealing a modest but well maintained suite. "Come on in. Want something to drink? I've got water..a few sodas."

"All right, I'm coming." Tony's nervous, and he's sure it shows, but he just can't help being on edge around the other man. Their falling out was bad, and it caused damage that is going to be difficult to fix. Tony wishes things could be the way they were, but the truth is, the damage has been done, and although they might patch things up, some scars just don't go away that easily.

Once they're inside, Tony takes a look around. "Nice place. And yeah, uh, soda sounds great. If that's okay."

He's realizing he doesn't know how to act around him anymore. Everything feels like he's overstepping, and although he never cared about that before, he feels like he has to watch himself around Steve.

Steve sets a still sealed soda and a glass of ice on the table so he can open it himself and see it hasn't been tampered with. Not that Steve ever would, but they're on a rocky foundation and the last thing he wants is to make Tony even more paranoid. He also remembers he doesn't like to be handed things, hence the setting it before him.

Steve gets his own then takes one of the two chairs in the sitting area. "It is awkward...I know. And I'm sorry it is."

Tony gives the glass and the soda a good once-over, but there's being careful and then there's being excessively paranoid. No, he doesn't like being handed things, and yes, he's somewhat concerned about being tricked, but he's still worried. And that bothers him on some level, because does he really have any business being worried? If he's going to try and see it from Steve's perspective, it's the other man who ought to be worried, not him.

"I mean, it's not like the last time we saw each other, we were fighting. Not just regular fighting, but no-holds-barred fighting." Tony lets out a long sigh, going back in his mind to that moment. "I'm bad at apologies, I know, but- Sorry."
cap_rogers0704: (Default)

[personal profile] cap_rogers0704 2018-08-17 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"You don't have to apologize." Steve says softly sitting down across from him. "We both know we're sorry it went down like that. I should have told you what I knew...if I had maybe it wouldn't have happened. Of course I can't go back and undo it....but I'd like a chance to regain your trust. I'll answer your questions...well most of them." Steve gives him a rueful smile. "Not about where we are....the safest way to keep Ross off your back is if you really and truly don't know where we are."
doesntpaint: (023)

[personal profile] doesntpaint 2018-08-18 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Tony shoots Steve a look. For him to say he doesn't have to apologize is nice, but unnecessary. He's done the man wrong, and more than once, too. And no, Tony doesn't believe it was deserved. "Yeah, I'm just going to have to disagree. I do need to apologize, bad at it or not. I screwed up, and I did some things that made things hard for you." This is probably the most open he's going to be about it, but it's also telling that he is being this open with his thoughts on the subject. It's important to him that Steve knows.

"Barnes is your friend. I get it." Sort of. "And me, I'm just- A royal pain in the ass. Always have been and probably always will." Still, he can't pretend he hasn't missed how things used to be. "I guess my first question is, is everyone all right?"
cap_rogers0704: (sadness)

[personal profile] cap_rogers0704 2018-08-19 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Steve nods and lets Tony apologize. He gives him a supportive smile and then bites his lip to stop interrupting Tony as he speaks. He knows he's trying, he wants to be a good friend about it. "Everyone's okay...as okay as can be I think. I know Clint and Scott really wanna try and work something out...they have kids...families. I think they're willing to make a deal for house arrest or something where they can still see their lved ones. The rest of us...we're safe...ish.

And Tony..Tony you're my friend...please you have to believe me...it...when you said you were my friend...past tense that was one of the worst gut punches I've ever taken. I deserved it, I wasn't a friend to you..but it still hurt. I...I had to stand on Buck's side because no one else was and he needed me. He needed someone to fight on his side....I." Steve looks close to tears and he puts his head in his hands, tugging hard on his hair as he tries to figure out what to do...what to say.

"Please Tony I never wanted you to find out like that...to think that someone who honestly loved your father as a friend could do that to him in cold blood of his own free will. I should have told you when I found out after the Triskelion fell. I should have done a lot of things...I should have told you that you were important too..."

Wow. That rush of words takes Tony by surprise. Steve never talks that much, not even when he's fully into his Captain America persona giving orders and kicking ass. He knows this situation is different; it's emotionally charged and it's hard. He knew that going into this meeting. "Shoot. I forgot about them. I know how that sounds, but- Damn." Tony fights back the urge to slam his hands onto the table. The Accords did damage; he knows that. He just didn't realize how much. "You know how there are some things you wish you could undo but you really just can't?"

He thinks that of all people, Steve will understand that. He just hopes he can forgive him for his screwups.

"Yeah, that- That was uncalled for." Except it felt justified in the moment. "There's no excuse." Tony looks down at the table for a moment or two; it feels like he's intruding on something he has no business seeing. Steve is a leader, one of the strongest men he's ever met, so seeing him like this feels like it's not something he ought to witness.

"Look, Steve, I'm a big boy. I don't need my hand held. I don't need to be told that I'm important." Except sometimes he does, but he can't admit that to Steve. "It was a real shock finding it out that way, but so? Sometimes life is shocking." He's just going to go the downplay route all the way. It shook him at the time, but now he can just pretend it's water under the bridge. "Besides, was it really of his own volition? I don't think so." He can't be sure, but he's gotten winds of whispers about brainwashing and mind control, two things he really hates thinking about, but it does put certain things into a kind of perspective.

Steve thinks that because he is a leader that Tony might need to see this. He's always considered Tony a co-leader. Everyone may say Steve is the leader of the Avenger's but Steve's always relied on the council and advice the other man gives him...most of the time. Sometimes Steve thinks everyone forgets he's a person...not just the shield. He was a person before he was Captain America and he's a person still.

"No, it wasn't of his own volition. Years...it took them years of torture and abuse to get him somewhat undercontrol and conditioned...all they had to do was say the trigger words and he'd do whatever the hell they asked him to do. It's what happened after the UN got him..Zemo said the words, took away his free will and...god Tony I just...how can a person do that to someone else?! I just don't get it. I've never understood why humanity is so cruel."

Overall, it's Steve who has the better reputation between the two men. He's more of a straight man to Tony's love of partying and somewhat raucous lifestyle. Granted, he's toned that down over the years, but his reputation of being a party animal still follows him. And, for Tony, it's difficult to look past the Captain America golden boy persona. It's what he heard about all the time growing up, and while he respects Steve, he also resents him on some level. It's not his fault that his father talked about him so much, so he largely keeps those thoughts to himself.

The bottom line is that Tony respects Steve's opinion, and although he finds it difficult to admit, he respects his authority as well.

"People are terrible, and they do terrible things." And he enabled that by manufacturing and selling weapons. Which is why he feels like he has a lot of penance to perform. "They aren't all squeaky clean like you are, but you know, maybe they should try." Except some people are lost causes; Tony knows that full well.

"I ain't squeaky clean Tony." Steve says with a wry smile. "I have good intentions usually, but that doesn't mean the outcome is good for everyone. I'm not perfect...I wish people would stop saying or implying I am. Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone." Steve says looking directly at Tony. "Making them doesn't make you a bad person...especially if you learn from them and do better next time."

"Come on, Rogers. Between the two of us here, who's got the better record?" He can't imagine what it's like to have such a Boy Scout reputation, because he's never had that, but apparently it's not all it's cracked up to be. "So maybe you aren't perfect, but if I'm going to be completely honest for once, you're a hell of a lot closer to perfect than I am."

He leans back into his chair, crossing his arms in front of him. "I'm trying to learn, and I want to do better, but you know. Work in progress and all that."

Steve nods his head conceding the point. He knows it's pointless to argue, Tony has made bad calls and they both know it.

Steve is sitting back comfortably in his spot, arms resting on the arm rests at his sides. He tilts his head slightly observing Tony, thinking. "Do you think...if the two of us put our heads together, that we could come up with something that would benefit all parties concerned. In other words, something the Accords should have been in the first place?"
doesntpaint: (058 (CW))

[personal profile] doesntpaint 2018-09-29 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
When Steve puts forward that question, Tony's almost relieved at the change of subject, even if it's every bit as much a weighty one as what they were discussing previously. "Of course we could," he replies almost instantly. It's not that he's so arrogant to think that they could make the Accords better, but he knows that Steve has a good head on his shoulders when he's not in emotionally charged situations (no one can think clearly in those instances anyway).

"The only problem I see is getting the UN to ratify them." They might not be so willing a second time.
cap_rogers0704: (Default)

[personal profile] cap_rogers0704 2018-10-05 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"You're still on speaking terms with Ross right? Maybe even Pepper could help?" Steve suggests. "I imagine there might be allies that might support it in the UN already."

Steve suggests without outright saying that T'Challa and Agent Ross might help them.
doesntpaint: (017)

[personal profile] doesntpaint 2018-10-13 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Tony tries to bite back the skeptical scoff that rises up in response to Steve's suggestions. He respects the other man, even in spite of everything that's happened, but he can't help but think that he's overestimating the pull Agent Ross and Pepper might have.

"I'm sure they'd want to help, but how are they going to sway the opinions of the UN and the Secretary of State?" In Tony's mind, all of this seems like an uphill battle that they'd most likely lose.
cap_rogers0704: (Default)

[personal profile] cap_rogers0704 2018-10-26 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
"King T'Challa might have a little bit of pull there...I don't know...it was just an idea." Steve muses with a sad smile.

"You sure we can't find a way to disappear Secretary Ross without anyone realizing it's us?" It's mostly a joke. Mostly.
