hurt comfort meme

Hurt/Comfort - Hurt/comfort is a fan fiction genre that involves the physical pain or emotional distress of one character, who is cared for by another character. The injury, sickness or other kind of hurt allows an exploration of the characters and their relationship.

[He has thought about her regularly since the tower, Especially with the span of years to separate him from, at least, the waking part of his nightmares. Recently, his thoughts of her had lingered on all the things he'd said the last time he saw her, some things he regretted now, and some he hoped she had forgiven, given the state he had been in.

The state that he had remained in, until the moment he realized that Meredith had been using him like her pet attack dog to help her secure more power.

He doesn't sit back down, instead stepping out from behind his desk, a couple steps closer to her. He doesn't have an extra chair to offer her, if she wants to stay, so he'll stand as well to make her more welcome.

What she says about the statue from Honnleath startles a small laugh out of him, a brief flash of a much younger, less damaged boy.]

No. If that's true, then my brother and I certainly have some apologies to make to it. When we weren't using sticks to practice swordplay on one another, we would take out our aggressions on that statue.

[He had never mentioned his family, when Cosette had asked him about his village. It seemed... insensitive, at the time.]

[ Children are children everywhere, aren't they? More than one statue of Andraste had felt her temper over the years in the Circle; she wouldn't be surprised if some of them still bore the scorch marks of her childish tantrums, when she was old enough to control her power and young enough to not always want to. ]

Don't worry, unless you were feathered and relieving yourselves on it, it has worse enemies to keep its attention.

[ Funny that his laughter makes him look both more familiar and less: younger, yes, but she certainly doesn't remember him laughing in Kinloch Hold, even before Uldred and everything that happened while she was away. And even if she had, it would have inevitably been overshadowed by the memory of him in that barrier, hissing at her like a deepstalker, more hate in his eyes when they met her own than she had ever seen in a living person.

Scouring away everything from the Circle had been like a serpent shedding skin, and what use did anyone have looking back on a place they had outgrown? The last she thought of Cullen, before hearing of the Inquisition and all its adventures from Leliana, was after Kirkwall, and most of her concern lay with her apparent cousin and her wayward Warden. The name of "Knight-Captain Rutherford" meant nothing to her, not until she understood what had happened in the city of her birth over the years.

Given what she learned of Kirkwall, she would have expected what she remembered of him to be dramatically heightened, fueled to new degrees of anger. And lyrium withdrawal, if she's right in her assumption, causes tempers to shorten and fray, not mellow. Yet, he offered politeness first. What caused the shift in the scales?

Again, not her business. But. ]

... The Inquisition seems to suit you.

That is good to know. Is that the reason behind the rumors I'd heard about Ferelden's declining pigeon population?

[He'd thought it a joke or a fluke, the few times he'd heard it in the years since he'd left. He can't say he's been paying close enough attention since his return to notice.

He does, however, notice how keenly she's watching him. It feels like her gaze sets his ears to burning. She's the Hero of Ferelden - even at his worst, he had appreciated that. But then, to him at least, she had always been something quite special.

The situation in Kirkwall had been dire enough that he hadn't spared much thought to the Hero of Ferelden, outside of learning that the Champion of Kirkwall and her apostate sister were cousins to the Amell who saved the world (he'd found himself once again guarding an Amell in the Circle, and at the time he'd had to put that thought out of his mind before he fell into that claustrophobic, clawing panic). He hesitates, breath half in and half out, and opens his mouth like he's going to speak just a second before she does.]

Yes, I...suppose it does. [He smiles, and rubs the back of his neck idly.] I've done my best to prove worthy of the trust the Inquisition puts in me.

[ Like lancing a boil, expecting poison: ]

And the Inquisition's mages?

[ Perhaps it's an unfair question to raise. Perhaps it's digging her thumb into a bruise better left alone. Fiona has expressed a cautious optimism for the future of the rebellion with the Inquisition's alliance, and if there's been trouble she didn't see fit to mention it, but. But Amell has built a habit of going after things she shouldn't, and her shared history with this fraction of the Inquisition's leadership means her search for cracks in the foundation is personal. It hangs between them like a barrier itself, too opaque to ignore.

So she watches him still, expression riverstone-smooth, waiting for — something. Shouting, lashing out, casting her from the office? She isn't sure. ]

[For a brief minute, it's almost like he can see the shimmer of a rosy barrier between them. Her tone is neutral, but he recognizes a challenge, a question.]

The mages have proven themselves worthy allies to the Inquisition. They helped the Inquisitor close the Breach, and if the Inquisitor trusts them then so do I.

[Perhaps not quite as far as the Inquisitor does, but. It's still far from the answer she's likely expecting to hear.]

I see.

[ Is it just like that? It sounds like something he's said before, either to himself or to anyone else who's questioned him. So is the difference simply because of the opposing actions of his superiors? Had the Inquisitor taken him off lyrium too?

Amell turns to fully face him, reports still folded in her arms, tilting her head like a curious apprentice. ]

And the trust they place in you?

[He could mention that he was recruited for this job by a Seeker of Truth, that one of his closest friends in the Inquisition also happens to be from the order trained to oversee Templars and mages as a neutral party. But he's almost positive that Cosette has met Cassandra by now, and he has no desire to throw her under the cart, either.]

I have done what I can to be worthy of it. They are allies, not prisoners.

[He's not rejecting her line of questioning, but he is uncertain of where she's going with it.]
warden_enchanter: (your compliments look good on me)

I'm glad to hear that.

[ She is, too. Her tone is genuine.

Still, the uncertainty is obvious in every stiff line of the man in front of her, and Cosette dispenses with the pointed looks and simply sighs. It looks like a unfamiliar hand of Wicked Grace from her perspective: the man she knew in Ferelden and the man she heard about in the Free Marches are of a pair, and the man here is a completely different suit. Her unease is not that out of line, surely.

Ugh, card games. ]

But you can't expect me not to have some concerns.

[He hesitates, looking at her and then up at the ceiling as he brings a hand up to rub the back of his neck.]

I understand. I'm not proud of the man that I was for many years, Warden-Commander. I let what happened at Kinloch twist me into little more than a monster. But Knight-Commander Meredith's fate was a rather rude awakening to what I was not far from becoming.

[Meredith had manipulated his fear and turned him into her attack dog. She had groomed him perfectly, to see blood magic around every corner and to excuse any action it took to protect the normal people from mages. Up until he realized that she planned to execute anyone else who stood in her way, too.]

I am not the boy you found in Kinloch Hold any longer. And I am sorry that that was the memory you had of me for so long.
