[ So there is a bird in your lap, Armand. He's far too big to perch on your shoulder, and you may or may not have had to discourage him from perching on your head at first, because he thought it was hilarious.

He settled for your lap, not because it's particularly warm, but because your coat is soft. At some point he tucked his beak into his glossy black feathers for a nap, and now he's fast asleep.

Maybe he'll wake up if you stop petting him. Maybe not. He looks pretty comfortable. ]

[No one has ever felt safe enough around X-23, the classified project, the weapon, to fall asleep in her presence. But Kurt doesn't see her as X-23. He's never called her that, as far as she can tell. And despite the many, many ways in which she does not deserve it, he has offered her nothing but friendship since she became a resident of the Institute.

Like most people, Kurt had movies he insisted Laura needed to see. His list was much less romance-intensive than Kitty's and Jean's, thankfully, but apparently, his mutations did not include the ability to marathon movies nonstop without eventually drifting off. In his defense, it is at least night, and he doesn't snore. His tail twitches occasionally - she wonders if he's using it in his dream - as he rests against her shoulder.

It would probably be less weird to wake him up. Watching him is likely creepy. But something about this moment feels incredibly humanizing to her, as if she really is Laura, teenage girl and not X-23, murderous weapon. So she holds herself perfectly still and lets the feeling go on. Just for a bit.

She's never had a friend before, so she's never had a moment like this. The peace is astonishing.]
