[it wouldn't be enough, of course it wouldn't be enough, to just be sent to her death; thanos takes, and he's taken that from her, too. because her death, she finds, is less of an end and more of a prison, one that's familiar in all too many ways. it may not look like sanctuary, with a dull orange glow as far as the eye can see, but it feels like it — there's a constant chill that she can't quite find a way to compensate for, and the space around her is filled with silence. emptiness.
silence, except for the whispers that come and go, voices she knows and voices she doesn't, fading before she can parse their words. emptiness, except for the vague forms that sometimes appear in the distance, with no predictability, and always disappear before she can come close enough for an identity.
time has no meaning here, but still, she tries to mark it in the only way she can — counting the number of times she can let a small pebble fall into the water at her feet before it floats back to her hand, over and over again. mindless, ultimately futile, but an action within her control, when so much is not.
she takes what she can; it's her own private rebellion.
seven-thousand, five-hundred and two, she thinks, mechanically, as the pebble slips through her grasp and promptly returns.
the last echoes fade as they always do.
she lets the pebble fall again.
seven-thousand, five-hundred and three.
only this time, it doesn't return.
this time, the water ripples, starting small and then progressing to waves, and for a moment, the ground shakes beneath her — not with enough force to knock her off her feet, but profound all the same. she turns, muscles tensed, and she —
sees a profile some distance away that she'd know anywhere.
maybe it isn't really breathing if she isn't actually alive, but something approximating breath catches in her throat as she freezes, as something starts to sting in her eyes. and —
no, this is an illusion, she tells herself, nothing more, nothing less, one purely designed to toy with her, somehow, because even this prison, of course, wouldn't be enough. it will fade soon, and then be gone forever; dwelling will do her no good.
but it doesn't fade, and her feet are moving an instant before her brain catches up, closer and closer, and one word, just one, falls out of her mouth:]
Peter.

[Let's get real here for a moment. Marinette is the type of person who would keep going even in the face of some big, terrible battle. If she's no longer able to become Ladybug - for whatever reason - she'll keep going as Marinette because helping people is what she does. She doesn't know any other way to be, regardless if it's just a stronger/better-than-average akuma or the final battle with Hawkmoo.
