The Sentinel and Guides AU Meme

Sentinels and Guides are Known:
A Sentinel!AU Meme

There are special people in the world: Sentinels--whose five senses are incredibly enhanced, sometimes to the point of overwhelming and who can easily lose themselves in fugue states--and Guides, the empaths with the ability to ground a Sentinel and focus them. Meant to be the protectors of the Guides, for every Sentinel there exists a guide that is their perfect match. In some universes, when matches are made, a Sentinel and Guide form a soulbond to fill the feeling of emptiness.

How easy was it for you to find yours? How are Sentinels and Guides treated in your universe? Or maybe you're one of the normal, unremarkable people. Do you fear Sentinels and Guides? Despise them?

oo1. The Meeting:
How did you meet? Was it at an event organized specifically for finding your other half? By accident? Did you follow a mystical calling to them? Some other way?

oo2. The Bonding:
Do Sentinels and Guides in your universe soulbond? How does it go down? Is there a ceremony or do you just retreat to the bedroom?

oo3. Rejection:
Sometimes Sentinels or Guides propose a match but it's just not perfect. You don't feel the pull or maybe you think there is someone better or maybe you're already claimed. Maybe you were claimed and someone better came along?

oo4. Protection:
Sentinels are meant to protect Guides, any Guides, but it's even worse when they feel their Guide is in danger. They go feral; blind to anything but stopping and killing whoever threatened their Guide or the bond. Maybe someone attacked your Guide or you haven't bonded yet and you feel threatened or maybe you're the one doing the threatening. Whatever the reason, Sentinels in a feral state are dangerous and only their Guides can stop them.

oo5. Lost:
Sentinels often lose themselves in their senses. Either you're a Sentinel who has lost themselves or a Guide that has stumbled on one or a friend trying to draw them out. Unbonded Sentinels will find it hard to escape without a Guide. Or maybe you're bonded already which means you just need yours to come home.

006. Persecution:
Sometimes normal people or the government fear the power of Guides and Sentinels. Guides are empaths, feeling the emotions and sometimes passing thoughts of others and it can make people feel violated. Sentinels often have enhanced strength, which can make them dangerous. So they scorn them, hurt them or in the case of governments, regulate them.

oo7. Death:
Unbonded Sentinels and Guides eventually lose themselves to the empty cavern inside them. Torn apart from the inside by the feeling of something missing. Breaking the soulbond of a Sentinel and Guide is agonizing and horrifying, leading quickly to death for the remaining partner.

oo8. Old-School:
Guides used to be treated on the same level as slaves. Unable to work unless their Sentinel said. Not allowed out on their own. They used to wear collars and couldn't own land or inherit money. Maybe the old ways haven't completely fallen out of style.

oo9. Unbonded:
Nothing is worse than being an unbonded Guide or Sentinel. Always looking for your other half to fill that empty feeling but you probably have friends that aren't your match or who are trying to set you up with someone. Maybe you're skeptical about the whole love at first sight thing and haven't been looking.

o10. Wildcard: Some mish-mash of the above or anything else you can come up with!

Clint nodded, moving to lean on the wall a little way away, closing his eyes and trying his best to not eavesdrop when it would be so very very easy for him to do so. He mostly had that under control by now, but sometimes the urge was too much. At least his security clearance was high enough that there probably weren't all that many secrets he could accidentally stumble upon.

He looked up sharply as soon as the door opened again, smiling slightly when Arthur came out of the room once more. It was a relief, more than he'd thought it would be, knowing that he'd chosen to come back, and quickly.

"I've got rooms if you want, or there's always a briefing room somewhere that's not being used."

Nodding, "Your rooms are fine." Arthur was wanting some privacy with Clint, even if it was just to talk, and he felt they would be more likely to get it there than any briefing room that anyone could just walk into at any given moment.

That made him smile a little, and give a short nod. "Sure. Follow me." He had enough clearance that no-one questioned or stopped them as they headed through the corridors towards the residential block. His quarters were fairly bare, very little to say that anyone actually lived there except for his bow leaned up against the closet.

"Make yourself at home."

As Arthur took in the room and how bare it was, he was skeptical that anyone could consider this "home" but then it was possible Clint wasn't here enough to add any personal touches to the room (there was also the point that it probably wasn't wise to set out personal items in his line of work).

It took him a moment before he decided to sit at the desk in the room, feeling it would have been a little rude to go right to the bed to sit on, he wasn't sure why.

He continues to look around the room as he opens up his container and begins taking bites of his food. After a few mouthfuls, he indicates the bow, "Do you always use a bow?"

Clint himself goes to perch on the edge of the bed, watching Arthur with a sharp eyed gaze. He traveled around too much to ever bother with settling in, moving from base to base, mission to mission. Not that he owns much beyond clothes and equipment in any case.

He smiles at the question, a genuine expression, more open and honest than is normal. "Much as I can. I'm good with firearms too, and I can throw knives. Most projectiles I've got a handle on."

Arthur finds that he likes the smile and it encourages him to ask more, finding that he wanted to know everything he could about his Sentinel.

"Were you trained with them or did you learn how to do all of that before SHIELD?"

"They're what got me recruited into SHIELD," Clint replies. Well, what he can do with those skills is what had got him recruited but they don't need to go into detail on that right this moment. "I joined the circus when I was ten. Got picked up by one of the performers there. He taught me."

Arthur can nearly feel himself sputter out his next bite but manages to chew and swallow before he's laughing a little, "Seriously? You joined a circus when you were ten?"

He almost asked about Clint's parents and where they had been, had they really allowed him to join but he felt that might have been a little too personal, too soon.

Clint snorts softly. He's had a lot of time to get used to that kind of reaction from people. It almost doesn't sting anymore. "Seriously. Me and my brother joined up when it came through town. Was there for... six, seven years or so. It's not as much fun as it sounds." A lot of hard, dirty work, not always with the pay they were promised.

It was just hard to believe that two young boys would join an actual circus. Kids would claim to run away and join the circus when they stormed off in a huff but to hear of it actually hap--but then Arthur couldn't go thinking that's exactly what happened.

So, he tried to evade that issue for now. Shaking his head and trying to will his mind from going to Dumbo for some reason. Arthur couldn't remember ever going to a circus.

"I imagine not. All those animals to take care of, always traveling with it after it packs up, all the hard work involved in getting acts right..."

And then, as the thought struck him, "How old is your brother? Is he an agent, too?"

Sometimes, telling the blunt truth is the best way to lie. he can't help it if his life reads kind of like a boy's own adventure story at points, and like a particularly brutal thriller at others. Clint just smiles mildly.

"All the mundane little jobs. Cooking, cleaning, shopping for food, setting up camp. Doing the washing. There's always a lot of washing."

And then talk turns to his brother and his expression twists for a moment and he looks away.

"He was a few years older than me. No, he's not an Agent."

Arthur can not only see the expression but can feel what's behind it, even as Clint tries to suppress it.

Quietly, pausing and lowering his fork, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to broach something that personal."

Clint shrugs dismissively, giving a slightly awkward smile. "Not like you knew. First thing most people ask is about your family. It's just what normal people do, right?"

Arthur gives his own shrug, feeling the corner of his mouth quirk as he looks back down at his food, "We aren't exactly "normal", though."

"Yeah well, we keep trying. Enough to pull off normal to the untrained eye."

He pauses for a moment, leans back against the wall. "It was a long time ago. It doesn't matter anymore."

Arthur watches Clint when he moves to lean back, silent for another moment before, "What matters now?"

Focusing on the present seems to be the best bet.

Now there's a question. It depends on his mood really. "The people I protect. The people here who gave me a chance." They're what mattered now, more than the past ever had.

Arthur nodded at that, smiling softly to himself as he could tell the other man was growing on him more and more. He counted it as a blessing considering some of the stories he had heard of a Guide and Sentinel being a match but not liking each other in hardly any aspect had ended quite badly.

After a few more bites of his food, "Have you had experience with other Guides before?"

He was surprised by how comfortable this all was. Even though he knew it was supposed to be, it still came as a shock to him. He didn't trust easily or quickly under normal circumstances, but he liked this guy. Could've done a hell of a lot worse.

"A few. SHIELD has a lot of unbonded Guides and Sentinels. I've worked with them before, had them drag me back. Never really took though. I have a reputation as being difficult to deal with."

Arthur couldn't help smiling a bit more at that, trying not to laugh.

His tone takes on a more teasing quality as he ate some more, "Hmmm. Makes me wonder if I have to worry about that happening with you..." Although he already had a feeling that that wouldn't be the case. Wasn't sure why other than the other man seemed like he actually wanted Arthur with him when he just could have pushed him away at the beginning.

That didn't mean their relationship would be perfect, but it did at least give an indication that the bond was wanted.

Clint smiled slightly at him, amused and pleased at his reaction. Better than he'd expected. His reputation was not entirely undeserved. He generally disliked people who tried too hard to get close to him.

"If you did, then you'd probably already be realising it," he said easily. He wouldn't even have let Arthur get this close to him, if he didn't want him to.

"I figured as much," he replied with equal ease.

"That and you wouldn't have invited me back to your private quarters." He hadn't intended that to come out as flirty as it sounded but it wasn't like Arthur hadn't noticed how attractive his Sentinel was...

Clint laughed softly, looking over at him with a raised eyebrow. "Be honoured. It doesn't happen very often." He didn't have the time for many casual hookups and generally wouldn't bring them back to barracks. Secrecy and all that.

"That chair can't be very comfortable."

Arthur can feel his cheeks and ears warm at that, giving his own soft laugh while shrugging one shoulder, "Most chairs aren't."

"I've sat in enough to know. Any that are comfortable I end up falling asleep in." And apparently babbling was going to go along with the blushing. Great.

"Certainly true of the chairs here," Clint said dryly. "And I say that as someone who spends a lot of time on my stomach on concrete rooftops." If he said that they were uncomfortable, they had to be pretty bad.

His grin widened when he heard that. "There's space here."
