{ Open to 1, 3, 4, 5. Ambrose is the kind of person who would probably weep at the discovery that this is a thing that is happening to him. Weep in a good way? Yeah probably. Mostly just in an impossibly moved sort of way. Intrigued at this happening with other vampires (for whatever lore-based purposes appeal to our similar tastes), or even just mortals. (Or non-human/non-mortal characters, I am open to any of that.) Character background and info on journal, I can AU him to a setting of your choice if you just explain your idea, otherwise I baseline with a modern setting.

*So like obviously this is a shipping meme, but I'm also open to uncommon pairings between characters that don't necessitate romance. Ideally I'd like ship (intense closeness and a draw to each other and a deep, almost invasive connection, with the romance only starting to develop after the soul mating is established) but something slibling-y or just inexplicably close and platonic is also fine with other gender types. [Here's a nice story: everyone in the world has a soulmate, and not only that, but you get an identifier to find them. A quote from them, seared onto your skin in black ink, just so you're certain you two are meant to be.

It's not quite as simple as that, of course.

For starters, it isn't the first words your supposed soulmate will say to you. That'd be stupid; almost everybody would have some variation on hello or excuse me or fuck off, those being the three most common things humans tend to say to each other when they're strangers. No, instead it's the first words that come out of one's soulmate's mouth once you're both ready for each other, evolved and matured and become someone that could serve as a partner for the other.

So not hello. More like I've finally come around and realized that pineapple on pizza is a sin, metaphorically speaking.

And of course, it isn't really neat, everyone pairing off two by two. There's those who never get a sign at all; there's those who spitefully ignore it and find their own partners. There's people who get several words, sentences fading in and out, divorces and weddings framing each period.

Homunculi don't get them at all. Why would they? They're not human, they almost certainly don't have souls, and even if they did . . . well. What human could possibly match any of them? What human could be the soulmate of, say, little Envy, or Lust, or, hah, Wrath? Never mind someone like Greed. Soulmates are all about giving, aren't they, so it's really not for him.

Now, don't get it twisted: that doesn't mean he's unhappy. Far from it. Sure, maybe he doesn't have a little cottage with some pretty wife and two-point-five kids, but that's not his style anyway. Nah, he likes it faster than that: drugs and alcohol and sex, money and power and violence . . . what partner could ever keep up?

Except one day, one half a year, there'd been a human who could.

It'd been kind of funny to see two sets of words branding themselves on Ling Yao's skin. Thank god they'd done it somewhere discreet; Father likely would have melted them both down then and there if he'd seen it.

Black marks down his back, scrawled symbols that make up the Xingese language. Ling had translated, but he hadn't needed to.

I need this power. I need it to protect, to provide for my people, and to take my place as ruler. And I accept all of the risks!

Your avarice is certainly appealing. Let's see if your stomach matches your appetite!

That'd been over half a year ago, of course. They've gone through a lot more since then, and learned to fit together far better. But the fact remains that they were right from each other from the start, greedy things that they are. Which, hey, kind of interesting. Definitely didn't know that was possible, but then there'd been patricides to commit and sacrifices to make, and boy, what a pain in the ass it'd been to wake up after having gotten all honest with the brat during those last few minutes.

There'd been a lot of tears, and hugs, and gruff words, and hey, what do you know: two nights later they'd found out half those marks had left Ling's back and transferred to his own, so hey, guess that soulmate shit affects homunculus after all. Weird!

And then . . . that's it.

Oh, it's not the end of them, exactly. They cross the desert; they reach Xing. There's a lot of fuss when Ling shows off his philosopher's stone and takes the throne over from his father by gentle but firm force. And he's crowed emperor, hey, long live the king! Fantastic, he's proud of the kid, that's great, but Greed has his own plans.

They don't involve being a palace lapdog for the new leader of Xing.

So he sticks around the capital city. So what? One city's as good as another, and frankly he's gotten real sick of Amestris. And let's give Xing credit, there's a hell of a criminal underworld going on. It doesn't take much to establish himself in it; within a year he's got a gang up and running, a group of misfits that he's just a little more distant from than he had been with his Devil's Nest group. Nothing personal, really. They still work efficiently as a mercenary group. Every so often he gets a nudge in one direction or another from on high, and sometimes he helps Ling out and sometimes he doesn't, depending on how much he stands to make from it.

Women, sex, money, power . . . he's got it all, all right.

Those words don't fade, though. It's like a brand on his back. Even his shield won't cover them; they're outlined in white, then, stark against his back, and he starts wearing a jacket instead of a vest to cover it up. Except that just reminds him of Ling, which is stupid, so he switches to a proper shirt instead, the collar cut low enough to be vulgar and show himself off.

A year and a half since the Promised Day pass. Two years since that day he and Ling became one and the same. And he doesn't believe in stupid shit like anniversaries or special days or whatever, but . . . maybe it's past time he paid the emperor a visit.

Obviously, he doesn't go through official means. No, instead he makes his way (don't worry about how, he has his methods) up to Ling's official room. It's a huge thing, but of course it is, he'd expect no less. Lots of fancy clothes, lots of fine possessions that have a slightly foreign feel to them. Greed's hands wander over them, examining them. Perhaps he pockets one or two. Who can say! ]

Not bad.

I mean, hey, I personally would have at least two ladies waiting for me, but no accounting for taste. You do you, kiddo.

[There's a masturbation joke in there somewhere, but he lets it slide. Instead he finally turns to look at him, grinning like the piece of shit he is.]

[ he feels it still. it was months ago that that awareness removed the shroud from his eyes - that busy street in lestallum, the smell of curried skewers heavy in the air. a high note of laughter; iris tugging at his sleeve. sunset gilding the sky. he'd played out the moment a thousand times in his youth, crowding out his loneliness with thoughts of a soulmate crafted for his heart alone. the shock of color was secondary - more than anything, he was suffused with the knowledge that he wasn't alone. that he'd never been alone - that someone else on that same street, breathing the same air, watching the sunlit dust motes flicker in the breeze - they'd been waiting for him their entire lives, too.

(what the storybooks don't tell you - there is no anchor tugging you one way or another. the color sluices out over the world, but no one takes your hand and kisses you breathless and declares undying devotion. the moment had come, and it had passed.)

but that hope remains, even in the knowledge of his origins. even a clone is the slivered half of a soul. even a non-entity like a barcoded half-human, a scrap forged and reforged and forged again.

he feels it still -

a lit candle somewhere beyond the haze of unconsciousness. prompto can feel its tiny pinprick warmth in the darkness, courage in its flickering perpetuity. despite everything that stalks near.

courage, prompto thinks, and his eyes snap open.

where, then, is the snow and sky? he might have panicked, if not for the nearness of that warmth - this is the arrowpoint he'd wanted, the existence spelled out in light.
