Being the Undying Man can be a real pain in the ass. Methos, the Oldest. Methos, the ancient. Methos, the man who had once been the Horseman of Death over 3000 years ago had already survived so much. He'd lived through some very interesting times but this, this was something he had never expected to live through. Perhaps he hadn't. Who knows how many times he had died. And while those machines seemed to adapt to mutations again and again, getting stronger, better, it seemed they still hadn't figured out the trick to keep the man that was now calling himself "Adam" permanently dead.

He always woke back up from death with a gasp on his lips and lingering pain from his latest Resurrection. He was always surprised that while he was out, no one had come for him. No one had come to drag him away to a camp or to a lab as a science experiment, to try and figure out the secret to his immortality. Nor did anyone come to take his head. Take it and end 5000 years of existence.

He supposes he has the kid to thank for that. Not that Logan is in any way a child. No. The Canadian is like him is so many ways. A survivor. Maybe the man hasn't lived as long as he, but he's seen just as much. Lost just as much and Methos is always grateful to wake up from death knowing that Logan is somewhere near-by. And while he might want to lay there on his back for a while and remember what it's like to breathe again, he knows they can't stay too long. There's no telling when the Sentinels would be back. No telling how close any humans might be.

He forces himself to sit up and casts about for the man who has become something like a friend to him. Something Methos generally avoided but now treasures. "How long?" He croaks. How long has he been dead this time? Since the attack? Until more come? It's an open ended question. He's always like this though.

Much has changed in the world since the rise of the machines, but tensions between humans and mutants have not. If anything, they have worsened. Mankind was more than happy to let the machines they built hunt down and enslave mutants around the world. It wasn't until their army of soulless hunters, androids and Sentinels and Terminators, all turned on them that they finally decided the problem of mutantkind was their problem too. It was too late by then, of course. But mutantkind has not forgotten the days before J-Day, and neither has Exodus.

If the armored truck he and his team currently occupy was being driven by humans, it would have been targeted and blown to smithereens by drones miles ago. But one of their number has the ability to hide the moving vehicle and everyone in it from electronic surveillance. Their prisoner might count himself lucky for that, unless he has already figured out whose hands he has fallen into. Renegade human gangs would gladly release or at the worst ransom the famous prophesied leader of the Resistance, but the few mutants who are left take a considerably dimmer view of--

"John Connor," he announces as he climbs back into the bed, his tone almost curious and his head tilted as he studies his captive. The lean and wiry young human before him doesn't look like much of a savior, and if not for his own mutant gifts to confirm it, he'd have never guessed this boy for any sort of Resistance leader, let alone the Resistance leader.

Lifting his chin, the mutant squad leader's piercing eyes glow a bright yellow. His face is stern, his mouth drawn into a thin line.

"Don't bother with any lies about your identity. I know who you are. I see the truth in your mind."

(ooc: Heeeey, apologies for never getting back to you on the picture prompt meme. I kept trying to write a tag and hitting a brick wall. This is my attempt to make it up to you. I'm leaving the details vague so we can decide together what happened, but I thought an alternate terrible very bad timeline crashing into the current one could work.)

When the end did come, the impact was quick and merciless. It felt like an earthquake, but not a normal one. Ensconced in one of the library's basements, Annie avoided the worst of it, but she felt the temporal backlash, and it brought her to her knees. Wrong. The nauseating certainty of that one word fell on her like a ton of bricks. Something was very wrong. She couldn't say how, but she felt it so strongly that she found herself on her hands and knees, suddenly and inexplicably violently ill.

When she stopped retching, and whatever it was had passed, she curled into a ball and trembled, unable to move. She stayed there for what felt like an eternity, but she knew was a quarter of an hour. A quarter of an hour and twenty seven seconds to be precise before she forced herself to stand and investigate her surroundings. Shelves tipped on their sides, books that had shifted and fallen to the floor and a deep crack down the middle of the marble that appeared to stretch from one end of the library to the other.

Slowly and cautiously, she made her way to the stairs and climbed them. The basements may have survived, but the rest of the building was in ruins. Annie emerged from the rubble into the jagged remains of the lobby, the sky looming overhead.

"What-" She began, then screamed as she came face to face with what remained of the head librarian, crushed beneath one of the heavy stone pillars "Shit," She whispered. "Shit, shit shit."

She pushed herself back against one of the walls still standing, and sat with her hands drawn up to her face, frozen in horror.
