((OOC: Definitely AU'ing this up in case his canon backstory ends up being in line with Life and Times. He's the poor kid who works multiple part-time jobs to help support his family.))
[If any of his teachers were asked about his performance in school, most of them would sum up that Donald was lazy. While he did enough to get by, it was just barely, and he didn't seem to try much harder than doing enough to pass.
Not that Donald really cared. He wasn't failing, wasn't that enough?
Currently he could be found in the living room watching TV. He probably had a project due, but he could work on that later.]
[Scrooge is not the ideal surrogate parent, and he knows it. However, he's made an effort for the past five years...even if he's still incredibly bad at this parenting thing. Raising his sister's two children isn't easy by any stretch of the imagination, and there's always this gnawing fear that he's done something to mess them up. The price of failure when raising a child isn't money; it's ruining that child's life.]
[He stopped adventuring though he maintained the Exploration department in his company (the vultures could pry that from his cold, dead hands). He worked twice a week from home and only worked weekends in emergencies so he could at least try to be there for the twins. Most meetings with foreign departments were done via video conference calls (thank God for the internet!) with him taking along the children when he absolutely had to go and it wouldn't interrupt their schooling...otherwise they stayed with their paternal grandmother for the duration.]
[He honestly couldn't help them much with some of their schoolwork since he technically had only the raw basics of a standard education and everything else he learned piecemeal via experience rather than formal training. Still, he helps where he can such as taking them places with real historical value or even periodically only speaking the language they're learning in school to help immerse them in things to help the words they were studying in some book have some sort of real world context. And as much as the trip to Disney World had physically hurt to pay for three summers ago, the kids had at least seemed to enjoy the two-week jaunt. (Thank goodness he'd flown in Matilda to help given how they wanted to go on different things and he couldn't just leave one of them alone to either ride or wait.)]
[But one rule in his house was that laziness wasn't tolerated. There was taking a day or two to rest after having given your all on a task (something Elvira and Matilda had to periodically remind him to do since he almost never did it himself and preferred "resting" by keeping busy on something else), but doing the bare minimum and coasting by? Not an option. By living with him, the twins would never want for anything, but he didn't want them to become the sort of inheritors who didn't understand the value of a dollar and hard work even if they never had to experience true hunger and homelessness as he had.]
[So when one of Donald's teachers snitched about him not fully applying himself, Scrooge had to take a solid hour to cool his anger enough to be able to talk to the boy without wanting to throw something at him. He then finds Donald in the living room and jabs the power button on the TV remote with his cane, moving to stand in front of Donald.]
My study. Now.
[If he were punishing both children, he'd gather them together to chew them out. Demanding to go to his study in that tone? One child was getting chewed out and the other wasn't allowed to listen in. The soundproofing of the room had originally been put in place for business purposes but it worked just as well for dealing directly with a child who might not want their sibling overhearing something personal they might have to say to their uncle over the course of finding out just why their behavior was so poor.]
[He gives a surprised 'Wak!' when the television was shut off, pushing himself up from the floor.]
Hey - !
[The rest of his protest is cut off when he notices the expression on his uncle's face. He balks at first, but puts on a stubborn look of his own as he grumbles and gets to his feet to plod off to Scrooge's study.]
[Scrooge walks behind Donald the entire way, making sure there's no way Donald can turn around and make his escape. Not that he could: Scrooge knew every inch of the house and there was nowhere Donald could hide.]
[As soon as they're inside, Scrooge shuts the door behind them and locks it so Della can't crack open the door to listen. He then goes to sit behind his desk and folds his hands on top of it.]
Got an interesting report from one of your teachers today: She wanted to tell me about a worrying decrease in your performance and that you seemed to have stopped applying yourself to your schoolwork.
[Scrooge tightly grips his hands, taking a slow, deep breath to try and calm his temper. He wasn't going to be the parent who slapped around his kids, but it's tempting to give the kid an old-fashioned spanking. Too bad nowadays that a swat across the tail feathers was considered abuse.]
No, but if I've told you once, I've told you thousands of times: I would rather you give something your all and fail than for you to coast by on the bare minimum. Up until recently, you didn't seem to have a problem with that, so you want to tell me what changed?
[It's harder to keep up with the amount of effort the twins are putting into their classes since only one or two classes overlap and the requirements of all those classes is so varied. Had his teacher not snitched, Scrooge would've still been in the dark.]
Believe it or not, I did read your report cards. You were doing better than this. Your grades went from "not stellar but a solid pass" to "one F away from flunking". So I'll ask you again, what changed?
[Scrooge is struggling to hold in his temper, and Donald can likely see it. He's trying, really, really trying, but Donald isn't making it easy. Very likely he's about to prove his own point about putting in the effort and failing.]

I'm not failing.
[Said like it would be good enough.]

Nothing. I've never been all that good with school stuff. You just never noticed.
[Unlike Della, Donald never really talked about how he did in school. So what would Scrooge know about how well he did before anyway?]
no subject
[Not getting out of this one, young man.]

[For some reason, he just seemed to pull into himself tighter.]
Nothing. I just don't like school, okay?

[He threw his hands up, his own temper flaring.]
Nothing! I'm just not as smart, okay?! I've never been as good in school, so what's the point?
