bad dreams are ordeals, sometimes seemingly endless. when you wake up, your heart pounds, your head hurts, and you end up drenched in sweat. even if you know none of it was real, it takes a while to orient yourself. it is pretty nice to have someone there to wake you up or to soothe you out of it and remind you that... it's only a dream.••• the usual rules apply. post with your character and preferences and then tag around, have your characters comfort others.

Peter liked sleeping at Jessica's place. Sure it was kind of crappy (although he'd been making improvements and fixing stuff up around the place) and it usually happened because they had really long, exhaustive sex but he liked falling asleep next to her. He liked spooking her or just reaching out his legs at night so that they were touching hers. Just that bit of contact that meant she was there.

Tonight though she wasn't sleeping very soundly. She was tossing and turning more than usually which kind of made it hard to sleep next to her. Especially considering it wasn't like she had that big of a bed to start with.

Still, he didn't just want to leave. Even a restless night sleeping next to Jessica was better than going to bed alone.

[Storm gasps as she awakens from the dream, eyes still wet from tears] God.. [It was the same dream again; they were attacked and people were hurt, everyone she loved and cared about suffering. She takes a few deep breaths to try and calm down, but the flashes haunt her still.

Storm turns to face the sleeping figure next to her, nuzzling her face into his chest to muffle the crying.]

[ it probably isn't really a shock that they have bad dreams. all of them, dave figures, although he's never specifically asked anyone about it. he only talks about things sporadically, though. one explosion every sixteen years should about do it, and the rest of the time he can talk about jokes and bullshit.

saying that is one thing; ignoring it when he hears the sound of someone else clawing awake is another, and while it takes him a second staring at the door before he calls on the rose in him to simply open it up and peer inside (nosy, but she's nosy and it works, so maybe it's okay) to say: ]

Bro, you up? I need a partner for midnight mario kart.

[ Most of the time when she gets to see Henry it's actually over at Horatio's house, probably because it feels like less of an imposition to visit the other officer, who doesn't have a husband that also needs to be okay with having a visitor over.

Tonight, however, he is spending the night at her house. It's been a good evening, having the young man at the dinner table was a pretty effective way to keep an argument from erupting, and now William is sleeping peacefully next to her.

For some reason, however, she can't seem to settle. After what feels like an eternity, she decides to get up and make herself some tea or something.

On her way to the kitchen, she passes the guest room door, and hears what sounds like noises of distress.

Now, Henry is a grown man, and she doesn't want to intrude on his privacy... but after some deliberation she still pushes the door open to take a peek inside the room.

He seems to be tossing and turning, but not in a way that would require a swift exit (look, you never know what people get up to in bed) so she walks into the room to sit down on the edge of the bed and gently shake his shoulder. ]

Henry, wake up. You're having a nightmare.

[It'd be a lie to say Damian's drawn-out wait isn't morbid curiosity. He watches from under his lashes, wondering what eternal hells someone as irrevocably Good as Dick Grayson could be visiting.

Clinically, his mind goes over everything, ticking boxes, a checklist for Emotional Baggage, and yet, even Dick's isn't nearly as long as someone like Jason's. His. It doesn't seem to be, and then Damian thinks maybe he should process their value, their weight, rather than how many.

There's absolutely no sound when Damian leaves, or when Damian comes back again. Dick isn't awake still, so his voice is peaked with sharp command when he says:] Grayson. [And he's only going to have to say it once for it to work.] Wake up.

[Eyes open on someone much too young to look this dour. If Batman's suit had a human stand-in, it would be Damian Wayne: imposing even with a laughable height, leaving it unquestioned because of the severity of his sharp brows and sharper line of lips. The din of the charity is surprisingly absent, and the moon half blocked by Damian's head is probably enough sign that tuxedos go off and kevlar reinforced suits go on.

But here Damian is, standing by the settee, throat forever strangled by the tie, the very last button of the shirt done up, jacket on, and sleeves unmarred by the wrinkles of rolling them up. The tiniest, bitterest guardian angel to which Dick will ever wake up.

Memory is a fleeting, ephemeral thing. Nyx tries to cling to what scraps he can-- sneaking a slap to Midnighter's leather-covered ass while trailing behind him in some underground bunker, catching sight of one of the fucked up cultists who believed in something something blah blah about rewinding everything into the Void, and he's drowning now, sinking into inky darkness as it all falls away. The last thing he remembers are black tendrils dotted with pinpricks of light, like coils of starry night wrapping around him and swallowing him whole.

Nyx is standing in the center of town. He's sixteen, fresh faced and gangly, stubby braids hanging past his ears, tall for his age (but he never grows any taller, not after Galahd.) Blood trickles down from a cut in his hairline and smears over his lip.

All around him, Galahd is on fire. That's... nothing new, that's the scene seared into the back of his eyelids every time Nyx closes his eyes, and he knows what happens next like a beloved old tune.

Help.

His little sister's voice. Serena, who'd said she would go help Mother, who'd told him to run, and coward that he was, he'd done it. Taken off as fast as his legs would carry him, as the air sears his lungs with smoke and the taste on his tongue is of ash and char. Sheer, naked fear crowds out every other thought in his head. He trips on a crack in the sidewalk, yes, he remembers that part too, skidding to a stop before he plows headfirst into a stop sign. And the thing that's funny and not funny at all is that Nyx hadn't gotten far, barely past the end of the block when with a groan like a hundred trees all felled at once, the shabby old tenement at the corner of Luftis had collapsed practically right on top of him, pinning him beneath hundreds of tons of cement and rubble and metal, all of it on fire. (It's a wonder that he'd even survived, caught under a slab of concrete propped precariously up by a someone's dinner table. There was even a plate on top. He remembers the shine, firelight caught in the sharp curves of ceramic.)

Help!

And then Nyx hears his sister's voice, and it all happens between one breath and the next, Serena and Mother stumbling out of their home, pursued by an enormous hulking creature and a second figure moving in jerky lockstep, holding a gun.

He's not strong enough. He is never strong enough. The MT raises its machine gun, but before it can shoot, the daemon takes them both with two snaps of its razor-sharp jaws as Nyx screams. The sound is high and thin and awful, tears streaming down his face, on and on and on, the moment stretching like a rubber band-- before snapping back into place. The building collapses once more, and Nyx hits the ground with a choked cry of pain. Two figures run out of the house, and the daemon gorges itself on their corpses. Rewind. Replay. Again and again, part of him trapped forever in this moment like a fly in amber, horror and despair, grief and shattering guilt.

[ it used to be something she'd do with johnny -- wake up after bad dreams or when she couldn't sleep and go to his room, spend time with him. johnny isn't here now and dutch isn't the one with the bad dreams, if the shout she's just heard from d'avin's quarters is anything to go by.

it used to be something she'd do with johnny, but a lot of things she'd do with johnny have become things she does with d'avin. they're a team now while johnny goes to find whatever it is that he's looking for. solace, peace of mind, a way to cope with his loss.
