Tell a story in one sentence

Inspired by our muse community musebysentence . We know that not everyone is interested in joining comms, so we thought we would host a meme based on our community concept and if it is successful, possibly make it a monthly thing.

If anyone enjoys the meme, they are welcome to join us on a regular basis at musebysentence , where we offer weekly prompts for muses with open membership. Muses tell their stories in a single sentence about any facet of their life, with first person or third person stories welcome. Sentence stories can be a stand-alone post as merely a snapshot of your character's life, or also act as kick-offs for open RP in response to the sentence like other like RP comms out there, which is our premise for this meme today.

Sometimes, a single sentence can paint a bigger picture. Select from one of the 100 prompts below from our prior prompt sets and write a single sentence story for your muse as your starting point. It can literally be about anything. It can be in first person to kick off a conversation, or third person to kick off a whole scene. The choice is up to you. Snapshot a tiny piece of your character's life and others are welcome to tag replies to it.

Alternatively, much in the spirit of TFLN, you may prefer to "borrow" a sentence for a starting point from www.onesentence.org that suits your character. If you do, please just note at the bottom of the post a credit to this site so we are aware it's not your own original work just out of courtesy. If a sentence is your own work, no need to add any credits.

♦Try to make your sentence something people can inspire a scene from, which is ultimately the purpose of the meme. He looked her over for a long moment. From her bright eyes to bare feet. He wondered if she had been in the hospital, in that ward Regina thought most didn't know about.

"Some have nothing to enjoy. Not in the light or the dark," he said, not sounding snappish but weary.

Alice shook her head in the dark and chuckled softly, the sound quiet and subtle like someone who wasn't accustomed to laughing often. "We're not from the hospital," she assured. "Just don't care very much for shoes..."

Alice sucked her lower lip and tip-toed closer so they were standing a civil distance apart. She gave him a quick glance, then looked down to her feet. It didn't bother her one bit being barefoot. In fact Alice rather enjoyed the simple feeling of the Earth under her feet.

"Don't lie," she chided. "You have your happy memories, light or dark."

Jefferson jerked then, eyes narrowing as he straightened. "I didn't say anything, and who the hell are you," he demanded to know, voice raw and hard. "And who is with you," he asked, given her use of the plural word.

"Whatever I have had, none of them were in this town and whatever you may now of my memories, I will not endure this."

His head snapped up, trying to look around in the dark. "Is Regina with you?'

"No, no, no," Alice hurriedly stammered, taking a step back. "There's no-one else here. Just Jefferson and Alice." The words barely died on her lips before she winced, realising the mistake of using a name that hadn't been offered yet.

"Sorry, it's... confusing. Hard to explain getting all mixed up in someone else. Please don't be upset." She clenched her hands in front of her, and gnawed at her lower lip. It set her on edge when others were, too.

He sniffed, chin raising when she used his name. "Beyond you knowing who I am, which says much about why you might be here, but you said we're not from the hospital. Just what is that supposed to mean."

"I'm always upset," he said, tense and prepared for all of this to go wrong. "Why are you out here?"

Alice looked back the way she came, suddenly skittish and ready to bolt. "It's a nice night," she offered, a nervous note creeping into her tone. She shifted her weight from one leg to the other. Suspicion was in the air.

"We... Alice..." She narrowed her eye and clenched her jaw for a second. "I like to walk when it's quiet. It's quiet when most people sleep."

His gaze went up and not towards the city. He rarely looked to the city except for when he could see his daughter. "I suppose it is, though still doesn't make it safe here," he pointed out, voice still so careful.

"That does not explain the we, though I suppose you don't have to, do you?"

She huffed out a frustrated breath through her nose. What could she say to explain her almost complete lack of identity? What words could convey how there's no sense of self when the thoughts, memories, worries, hopes, and dreams of every passing stranger, every person too close bleed through.

"What would you like to hear?"

That huff of breath made him smile. If he could push buttons, could keep her off balance, then he had the upper hand. It was how he handled most people.

"Who are you? Why are you here? Where have you been?"

Oh, but she's almost always off-balance. It's just less noticeable in situations where there are fewer people out and about.

"Alice. Walking. There." She pointed vaguely back in the direction from which she'd come. "Our brother stays with his friends and we stay with them, too. Outside the city. They value their privacy."

He took a step forward, smirking at the way she moved. He couldn't help himself and his very nature when it came to such things.

"I meant, where have you been..." He stopped, considering that statement. "Wait, there? You came into the city?"

She flicked her eyes up for a second, then back down. She was always fidgety when she wasn't engaged in some action. She turned again behind her and pointed into the darkness.

"It's far away, the house. But we like to walk so it's no bother to come here."

"Far away," he repeated, glancing that way though he couldn't see anything. "Beyond Storybrooke? Where do you live? With whom?"

He was excited and it showed in his voice, though there was a hint of an edge to it, nervous and wondering if he was being tricked.

"Yes," she quipped, echoing his excitement without meaning to. Alice nodded, a smile tugging at her lips. "Yes, outside. With our brother and his friends like an island of misfit toys. They're all very private and dislike the city. Secretive."
