[It’s been some time since they were able to hang out just the two of them, no friends or family to get in the way, no special event taking up their attention. When Elio returned from Bergamo he was miserable for days, internalizing his pain and keeping to himself for the most part. In retrospect, he feels guilty for the way he treated Marzia during that time and the days before, how inattentive and lost in his own world he was. It’s like he was riding on the high of an addiction and finally crashed back to reality. She deserved better than him. At the end of the day though he’s grateful to still have her friendship, even if it’s been tense from time to time. He loves Marzia just the same and isn’t sure what he’d do if their friendship broke apart as well.

Which is why he’s excited when she finally agrees to meet him at the cafe by the local bookstore, a meet up of theirs from way back, even if it’s been ages since they last hung out here. He orders himself a marocchino while waiting for Marzia to arrive, a paper bag on the seat beside him (perhaps with a gift), fingers drumming against the table in nervous habit as he stares out the window. If she doesn’t show up at all he likely deserves it.]
