Wakandan weddings were b-a-n-a-n-a-s. Or at least when you were marrying royalty they were. Peter sometimes forgot that Shuri was royalty. Not because she seemed ordinary, because no one could ever mistake her for that. No, Shuri was the most special, extraordinary person that Peter had ever met. From the first time he'd met her when visiting the Wakandan Embassy in Oakland as a part of the Academic Decathlon team having won the National Championship he'd known she was special. She was the smartest, most beautiful person he'd ever met and he fell head over heels for her. Literally, he fell down a set of stairs while he was there because he couldn't stop listening to her and looking at her.
They'd kept in contact after that, the clumsy white boy and the Wakanda Princess. It had apparently taken her all of about two days to figure out he was Spider-Man. She told him she would have done it faster but she was busy in her lab for most of that time.
It had been a weird sort of romance. Long distance broken up by saving the world/universe. He'd nervously asked her to prom senior year, almost throwing up he'd been so worried she would say no. College wasn't exactly easy after that but they were "official" by then. At least to each other and their immediate family. It was surprisingly easy to hide from tabloids when your girlfriend had the most advanced technology on the planet (and probably several other planets as well).
Peter had taken to learning Xhosa, which was not an easy language to learn at all. He'd wanted to keep it a surprise for her (and also because he knew she'd laugh herself to tears at her accent), which had made for an awkward family dinner one evening when they'd all started talking about him and didn't realize he could understand them. In the end though they'd respected him more for it, even if they all did laugh at his accent. Apparently Xhosa spoken with a Queens accent was hilarious.
They'd talked about marriage after college, Peter wanting to finish his degree first. Having that sort of motivation, as well as a fiancée that was understanding about the fact that you had to sometimes put on a skin tight costume to go save people. It wasn't an easy relationship but Peter knew that all the best things in life were worth the world. And Shuri? Shuri was the best thing EVER. So yeah it was difficult when they were apart. And sometimes when they were together, but Peter loved her more than anything in his life.
But goodness the wedding almost drove him insane. They were having a Wakandan wedding, of course. Because what the heck was a Queens wedding anyway? And like everything Wakanda and it was beautiful and rich in history and really complex to an outsider.
He had a million questions for her. Was he going to have to fight anyone for her hand in marriage? "Only if you try to leave me at the alter." Who was M'Baku and why is he sending me emojis of "broken heart" "gorilla" and "skull"? "That's sweet of him." On and on and on he had so many questions and he seemed to delight Shuri with every one until she finally kissed him senseless and told him to stop worrying so much.
If Peter had to describe the wedding he would have been hard pressed to choose between "beautiful", "exhausting", or "extra". When it was all done (how was it possible for so many people to dance so much?) and he and Shuri were finally left alone Peter just collapsed face first on the bed. He wasn't even sure how to take off his fancy ceremonial robe and right now he didn't care, all he cared about was that he didn't have to stand up or move or smile anymore. Also, he and Shuri were married, that was pretty dope.
"I love this bed," he said, voice muffled because he didn't have the energy to lift his head up. "I love this bed almost as much as I love my wife."

Graceful descent on the staircase or no, love at first sight hadn't struck Shuri upon meeting Peter Parker. Among the seemingly endless sea of America's best and brightest, all awestruck to get a glance at tech they'd thought only existed in whatever whitewashed sci-fi Hollywood blockbuster that came out last summer, he didn't stand out initially - not strikingly handsome nor noticeably charismatic. Not her type, either, though that was not the fairest assessment. Due to her finding romance mindnumbingly boring outside of a concept she could use to torture her brother (his schoolboy crush on Nakia was an endless well of amusement), she didn't have a type.
Maybe a supercomputer with abs. That would be worth getting out of the lab for.
But Peter did what no one else dared when he approached her with a genuineness that, thankfully, that intrigued her more than caught her off guard. And sure, he made her laugh, which as a bonus, though that wasn't what drew her to him that day and then for days, weeks, months, years afterward. That honor? Without question, her initial attraction sprung from the way he viewed everything, from her to science, with an unaffected wonder. He was honestly happy to be caught up in the moment, the world around just so awesome. Compared to a world of pomp and circumstance, royalty and expectation, Peter Parker was a breath of fresh air.
...all right, okay, full disclosure, the laughs he brought were pretty important, too, her initial discovery of his spider-suited identity still a running joke with her. A spider? Really? Still, she had to admit, the spandex did show off his tight little -
Ask Shuri when she fell fully, completely in love with Peter and she couldn't tell you. What she would admit was that she loved him now, with the fierceness that only a princess of Wakanda could possess. Marriage was the only logical conclusion. Far be it from her to deny cold, hard logic, despite how long and drawn-out she knew the affair would be. There had not been a proper royal wedding in years, and the people practically burst with excitement at the mere announcement. At long last!
Sadly, their king remained unmarried. They'd have to save their open dancing in the street for that occasion.
"Because remember," Shuri said, settling down on the bed beside him, untying the neck of her garment that was nearly as oppressive as the corset she'd abandoned in the hall before she leaned down to kiss his shoulder, "I can still have the marriage annulled and you thrown into a pit of animals of my choosing. Personally, I am fond of jackals."
Peter made a happy growling sound as Shuri pressed a kiss on his shoulder. He could feel the warmth of it through his clothes and felt that warmth rush through him with a sort of tingle that reminded him when he was a little kid and he and Ned had stuck 9 volt batteries on their tongues. He was also pretty sure he'd heard the sound of clothing being removed which filled him with another type of warmth. Of course given how many layers Peter had put on that didn't necessarily mean Shuri was unclothed. But he could hope.
"You wouldn't do that. Too many people have told you that this was a mistake. You wouldn't give them the satisfaction of being right. You'd just feed me to the jackals and say it was a tragic accident," Peter said, rolling over to smile at her.
"Oh," was all he said when he saw how much she wasn't wearing. Shuri was stunning. Even fully clothed she was absolutely stunning. Sometimes just seeing her smile left him almost dizzy. Seeing her in just a smile always causing his brain to break a little bit and need to reboot. Any state of dress in between that brought varying degrees of brain-breakage. "Lucky for you the bed is like... distant second. Way distant."
Peter loved that he and Shuri could joke. For all her brilliance she loved to give people a hard time, loved to have fun, loved to be playful and Peter was drawn to that as much as he was her brains and beauty. Life with Shuri was never, ever boring even in the few times they had together where things had become something of a routine.
"Your command of your language never ceases to amaze me," Shuri said with a wide, toothy smirk that was as at home on her face as a look of concentration while she fashioned a new creation. As a purveyor of fine quippery, busting Peter's chops was a matter of enjoyment, pride, and affection. The last was incredibly important and ever-present: she gave the hardest time to those she adored the most. His Royal Highness had been the brunt of most of her jokes for her (short) life, but her husband was catching up.
Husband. Speaking of the power, or lack thereof, of language, the word in English still paled to the implications wrapped in Gordian knots that it held in her tongue. The heaviness that accompanied was almost frightening in scope. Her relationship with her forefathers' traditions unique at best, as it was put in polite company, she still respected the bonds such ceremonies represented. Enough to have a Wakandan wedding or no wedding at all, for her feelings for Peter deserved the sincerest, deepest vows on the planet.
Which was exactly the kind of levity that fostered her decision to follow through on a previous urge and tweak at one firm cheek of his rear. No matter how many layers of robes he put on, that glory could not be hidden.
"Have you decided to adopt new pajamas?" Because he still was so woefully overclothed, compared to the way her thin gown rolled down at the shoulders and up as she pulled herself entirely onto the bed.
"...the handiwork of jackals is underrated, especially when they're in packs."
Translation: she was going to have to get her husband out of these wraps because, if anything, she deserved a reward for being part show-rhino in full regalia for the day.
Peter didn't mind the jokes, it was pretty easy to tell that she did so because she cared. Shuri demonstrated her fondness for you by finding out exactly what would annoy you the most and then teasing you with it. It had rankled him a bit at first, being the object of bullying for so long, but once he understood what she was doing it made him feel special. Just one of the many, many ways that she made him feel special.
Like how she pinched his backside, causing him to yelp and finally roll over completely. Having someone appreciate you for your body (but not just your body) was also one of those things that made him feel special. Agreeing to marry him was kind of a big one too but Peter was kind of partial to all the little ways she did it. Or, you know, the big way she did it by wearing so very little.
"Okay, you make a good point," he said, hopping up off the bed and struggling just a bit to remove the top part of the ceremonial robe. It still felt kind of weird to take his clothes off as part of a show but he liked that Shuri liked it. Any time he tried to be overtly "sexy" it usually resulted in disaster but the laughs were worth it. Peter was just about to strip his pants off as well when he suddenly remembered something.
"Wait! I almost forgot! I got you a wedding present!" he exclaimed before bounding off, climbing up one of the walls to a ledge that was out of the way for anyone that couldn't climb walls, rambling as he went. "So you know that Dr. Strange wizard or whatever? And he has that Eye thing that can reverse time? That got me thinking. So I gathered some stuff up and took it to him..."
Grabbing a box from the ledge he jumped back down to the ground and headed over to the bed where his wife (holy crap, his wife, he was never going to get tired of that even if he said it a hundred time already, Shuri was his wife) was laying.
"But he did his magic and.... tada!" he said, pulling off the top of the box to reveal a medium sized pot. In the pot though were a half dozen Heart-Shaped Herds that had been reformed out of ashes by the magic of the Infinity Stone.

[Life has gotten all sorts of awkward following the closure of the office she worked for, Shibuya Psychic Research. Naru may have gotten the closure he wanted but Mai was ultimately left with a problem. With Gene disappearing, she was more or less left to protect herself in a psychic landscape she didn't know quite as much about as Naru or Gene did. Naru's advice had been off-handed and casual.
"Find a husband."
Her first response had been to fume, imagining that narcissist of a boss of hers was just saying something to brush her off. It didn't take her long though to pick up on what he meant, at least once Masako straightened things out.
"It's fairly common for a medium to have a spouse with high spiritual resistance. We're prone to possession after all and a partner is almost essential."
If that was the case then... well, she supposed it was the best idea then. She didn't want to struggle just to live a somewhat normal life and she could offer a husband... uh. Well. ... What could she offer a husband?
That was the question she was still tripping up on this many months later, a wedding band on her finger and the promise of a shared bed she spent more nights laying awake in than anything. After years of living on her own, orphaned at a young age, it was almost as much the sheer fact of someone else being in the same bed as it was that someone being her husband.
So here she is, tucked into pajamas and ready to settle in with the same questions rolling over in her mind that had been spinning out of control for days now. Do you make conversation before bed? Should I say anything? Is it rude if I don't? Should I...

Her sensitivity put her at incredible risk, and so it was in her best interest to find a partner who was about as appealing to those spirits as a pile of rocks.
Which was where Rei came into the picture; he was a brick when it came to anything metaphysical, and could be a good guardian for Mai in her difficult time.
