Sworn to the Sword;
![]() |
shipping meme It's textbook, really. Or, more accurately, parchment, because you've either found yourself or always been in a time (it doesn't necessarily have to be medieval) where swords - and possibly sorcery - are the weapons and the mindset of the day; at the very least, the rough and tumble attitude that comes with a knife's edge permeates the land. And you know how to wield a weapon, be it a blade, your own body, or something else entirely, so you've put it to good use. You've become a sworn sword to protect someone. It could be out of the goodness of your heart, out of heritage, or stemmed from a desire for compensation or power. No matter what the cause, however, one fact remains the same, and that's how you cannot let emotions cloud your judgement. Of course, that may be a little easier said than done. When you're so close to a person, in order to keep them safe, and when you put your very life on the line... ...ah, but you must persevere. Your duty does not allow you to falter.

ray donovan.
Ray is the "knight", but doesn't have the virtues of one. He's violent and angry and it's not entirely sure whether he protects out of love or because of control and emotional blackmail. ]
Athos | The Musketeer (BBC)
Athos is a Musketeer, meaning he's akin to a knight. He's slow to temper, quiet and professional. Usually in control of his emotions but has moments of passion.}

Laurent grew up gentle, bookish, adventurous with a love of horses. His older brother had always been intended to rule France, but Auguste had died in a duel and with both their parents already dead the succession had become... complex. Laurent was too young, but between his uncle and Cardinal Richelieu France had been kept afloat. At some point, in his youth, Laurent had seemingly vanished from court -- then returned soured, changed. Yet returned he had, and he was present once more in the public eye. Of course, his uncle is only Regent so long as Laurent stays too young to rule. It's six months until his succession, and Laurent has been keeping the Musketeers as close to him as he can. Richelieu and his Uncle work to discredit both Laurent and the Musketeers as much as they can, he knows. It is in their mutual interest to keep Laurent off the throne, he understands, especially when it is well known Laurent wishes for peace with Spain and to be rid of Richelieu himself. It started off small, a general fuelling of public opinion that Laurent is lazy, unfit to rule, a warmonger, volatile, all sorts of things. When his mare behaved poorly before a hunt even began he knew it was worsening, and he knew that even getting proof of that was delicate. Yet all the same, he has to tell someone. He needs support, and he needs those supporting him to know exactly what they're up against.
In the quiet of the garrison, Laurent waits until the office is empty of anyone but himself and Athos. He's dressed down, kept his bright blond hair covered on the way over and he's quite sure nobody recognised him. All the same, as calm as his demeanour is outwardly his pulse races. He stands perfectly still, back to the wall but bolting distance of both the door and a window if he needs to leave, and silently reminds himself he can trust Athos. His brother loved Athos. Athos is their best Musketeer. It feels like weakness to trust anyone at all, but without even one person Laurent knows he will be adrift in a court that desires nothing but his downfall.
"What I'm about to tell you," he begins carefully, "stays between us. Do you understand?"

Hephaestus remembers everything their hands have ever shaped, so of course they’d recognized one of their own creations, long dormant, shrieking to life as someone dumped magic through its circuits. Its cry echoes still, ringing in Effie’s ears as she steps into a darkened room. She’s not entirely sure where she is or how long she ran to get here (a while, if the aching stump is any clue, and wow she’ll pay for that later), she’d just stumbled away from her workbench and followed the traces of her own past work to this place.
Candlesmoke and incense linger in the air. The astringent smell clears her head, enough that her next steps are cautious and quiet. All the furniture in this space has been shoved up against the walls, making room to paint an intricate summoning symbol on the floor. Effie skirts its edges, gaze tracing the runes at the pentacle’s tips. Summoning isn’t her wheelhouse, but she’d wager the circle’s already served its purpose. There’s no mana stored in the red lines, no trap waiting to be sprung.
But there, in the center. There it is. A metal fragment no larger than a man’s hand, its edges rounded and smoothed by eons. The top-facing surface is polished to a mirror shine, its reflection of the ceiling marred by a pattern worked into the metal. Effie steps into and across the circle, coming to kneel beside the object. This is only a piece of a larger work, but the whole image rises unbidden to her mind: a circular shield edged in cresting waves - for the bearer’s mother - that encircle charging horses drawing two-man chariots. Archers and lancers bristle from the back of the vehicles, while the drivers brandish wasp-waisted short swords. The plumes of their helmets are swept back by a nonexistent wind, each horsehair picked out in the metal.
Effie snatches her hand back and sees only the sad remains of a once-intricate work of art. Her fingers curl into a white knuckled fist. Who did this? Who shattered her shield? Who had the balls to take one of her pieces and use it for some unsanctioned ritual? Who twisted the magics she’d so carefully laid into the metal eons before? This is sacrilege, it’s heresy, it’s--
--cloaking a massive mana presence.
The enchantment she’d once crafted occupied her attention so fully that she’d missed another source moving around in the room. Snatching the shard off the floor, she wheels around on her false knee and raises an arm already crackling with fiery energy.] Who--?

("You know, when you suggested this, I pictured less snow." Cade had said, when they repacked their gear and struck out earlier that morning. He carried like seventy percent of the weight. "And less...Eastern Europe."
Neph'd hummed and pointed downhill from their makeshift campsite, back the way they'd come the day before. "Oh, hey, I can literally see Russia from here."
Neph is not stone or splintered bone, nothing so immune to the elements. She hopskips through the snow as quickly as she can, arms outflung for balance, breath rasping behind her scarf. Her snowshoes clack against her boots and her hood's fallen back, exposing her ears and hair to the whipping wind. Somewhere behind her is her pack, meager contents scattered by the Eagle's first strike. She'd been lucky, or it misjudged its target, tearing through the straps and nicking her thick down coat. She'd slipped her arms free and dropped like eight feet into a snowbank, then taken off at this awkward run. Cade's shouts drive her on, furious cries of "Go, find him, he's got to be close!" almost lost to the wind and the thunder of the Eagle's wings.
The plan was always for Cade to deal with the murderbird while Neph negotiated with the Titan. The plan had not accounted for the combined handicap of a prosthetic leg, a bad landing and like twenty feet of permanent snowpack. The seal on her leg most definitely decoupled when she hit the ground, and now every dragging step is off balance, jarring. She grits her teeth and plows forward, because Cade had to be right:
Prometheus is around here somewhere.
Esther Moreau | OC

You know what's up... feel free to change anything cause I'm winging this
Mostly, that was Soren's doing. An unfortunate dealing with a rather infectious breed of werewolf that altered her own when she tried to protect her brother. Sometimes a night in someone's rented out cell wasn't enough to keep her contained until morning. Still, she didn't let her new circumstance get in the way of her duties, it was just something she needed to keep in check and a task for her family to keep under control. The last thing they needed was their family reputation to be under fire for being werewolves.
Soren was brought in to serve the Moreau family just a few months back, certainly not the first family she's served but one she knew best. Her brother's served the family long before she did and her parents before them and so on and so forth. Her work methods were simply set to follow orders, protect and the like but she wasn't someone's go-to to immediately trust or confide in. She realized she had to change that when she met Esther.
Very few opportunities led her to be sworn to young ladies but rather to scrawny boys who needed the motivation to be better than a female knight by their parents. Not that Soren minded, it was amusing to be an unmovable object in sparring matches between them.
Now, she's simply heading towards Esther's room, having been sent to wake her up for the day's lessons by her father. Soren gently bounced an apple she was carrying in her palm as she gently knocked on the door before entering, not bothering to wait for a reply back.
"It's time to wake up, my lady." She called out before opening the curtains, letting the bright morning light illuminate the room as she leaned up against the window sill, arms crossed as she waited for Esther to stir.

Mizuno Ami/Sailor Mercury || Sailor Moon (various versions)
How about a bit of an argument and jealousy and conflicted wishes to who to protect?
He knows it's stupid. Pointless. But sometimes... Just sometimes, Tsukuyomi wishes that things were different. That they weren't sworn to protect Serenity, Usagi. At least not at the cost of their lives. It's not that he doesn't want Usagi to be protected, he loves her, she's basically his sister, his twin, two souls so similar but yet so different that should have never existed at the same time if not for the power of the ginzuishou. He would give his life to protect her, but then again he was never meant to exist so it's fine. But the others... Ami and the rest... They shouldn't do it. They shouldn't have to do it.
They shouldn't look so happy and proud of a job well done when everything turns out alright again and the ginzuishou's miraculous power brings them back from the brink of death or beyond.
And normally he can deal with it. Normally he understands and accepts the reality as it is. But other times he just wishes it all would stop. That it would change. Or that at least he would be able to sworn to the sword to protect the one he loves the most, even from her own duty as a protector.]
Am I really the only one who thinks that was a disaster?
[It's a beautiful day again in Crystal Tokyo, the traces of the crisis they had just faced and overcome gone from everywhere but their own memories. All thanks to the ginzuishou's power, all thanks to Usagi- Queen Serenity, once more pulling herself together, at the last moment when everything was lost, to bring forth a miracle. And normally he understands how hard it is to control the ginzuishou even now, he knows the burden that she carries, heavier than anyone's else.
But normally he doesn't find himself holding Mercury's lifeless body until she pulls that miracle and brings her back. So today, unlike normally, he is leaning against a wall in the library where Mercury is with a rather somber attitude and a terrible mood.]

Kunzite | PGSM Sailor Moon
for @angstennou
Of course, he cannot talk to Master Endymion about this; the master is too in thrall to the Moon witch-princess. And Zoisite will follow wherever Master leads - an admirable trait, no doubt, but Kunzite has begun to believe that opposition is necessary.
Next, then, would be Nephrite. He doubts the boy understands the issues involved, but all Kunzite needs to do, is to persuade Nephrite to follow this course of action.
He knows Nephrite's habits, of course, and as Nephrite follows the winding hall of the Earth Kingdom castle, a voice speaks from a shadowed corner.]
