scenarios;

① fuck the police, this is the best time for a walk. hope you've got a nice thick coat on.
② stranded in the buttcrack of nowheresville? weren't you watching the time? now you've gone and missed that last bus out of there. or maybe you're lost, somehow. what do?
③ literally chilling, in this weather, is quite easy to do. sitting around relaxing in it is a wee more difficult, but sometimes much more enjoyable, especially if shelter can be found. the snow is beautiful to watch, after all.
④ the weather's not going to stop you. your snow fort's packed full of ammo and ready to go. those aren't snow angels over there; they mark where the poor souls you've downed have fallen. be careful with that snowman's head!!
⑤ you're about fifty miles from civilization but there's a roof over your head, so never mind the chilly draught, right? right. you mightn't be the only one lucky enough to stumble upon this little shelter, though. remember to share the blanket.
⑥ everyone stuck outside should be jelly. you've got a fireplace and hot cocoa and damn if it isn't awesome. a heater's not quite so romantic, but it'd do. there'd better be a backup generator in case the power trips.

It's been a snowy week in Metropolis and the outlying areas. Mostly for the ones you can't reach unless you take that one wrong turn out of the big city. Then it's miles until you see civilization again and when you do it's not what you'd expect at all.

There' a castle in the middle of Kansas. The long driveway is outlined by lights, smoke coming from the chimneys and some of the giant trees on the manor grounds are still lit up for the holidays. If it's going to snow this late into the year, you might as well make the best of it.

It's inviting, this castle, bright in the dark of night, but not blindingly so. And only a little intimidating the closer you get.

The only thought Ray has about the castle is that he has to get to it.

It's none of his business what it's doing in Kansas, and it's none of his business figuring out the reasons for its existence. He's just here to meet Tess Mercer -- because a high paying job is a high paying job, and Ray's trying to be more open-minded about his offers.

He was told to meet her inside, so parking the car and making his way out is easy enough. Having grown up in Boston, the cold isn't anything he isn't already used to, and he walks in nothing but his suit up to the front door.

He knocks twice. The chill down his neck and back is decent; he's certainly experienced worse.

Tess is expecting him, so there's no surprise when security indicates there's someone at the door. It's only a few minutes later that the door opens and a tall redhead stares out at him.

"Can I help you?"
