The best things in life are what you can't have

Most societies have certain mores that are unspoken rules; humanity itself even has such conventions, grilled subconsciously into our minds for our own safety. Don't go out alone at night. Avoid getting wet when it's cold. Don't pick fights with those stronger than you...okay, some of us missed the boat on the last one, but the point still stands. Society's rules tend to be more variable, though they apply to most aspects of life - including sex. In fact, bending the rules on what's considered acceptable in romance and sexual encounters can lead to anything from ostracization to death, depending on the time and culture.

So, play it close to the chest if you're going to do a big, big, big t a b o o. Is it worth the risk?

[ There's a hundred thousand secrets locked away in Kirigaya Kazuto's brain after making it out of the online death game. A hundred thousand secrets that more unscrupulous men would kill for, all to make millions. Little wonder that the government's taken such an interest in him — to protect him, and all of those secrets that are too valuable and too dangerous for anyone to get their hands on. If they fall into the wrong hands...

But Lethe's hands aren't the wrong hands. At least, not as far as Lethe's concerned. And he doesn't want those secrets for selling on the black market. He doesn't want them for anything as petty as for his own personal gain.

No, he wants those secrets because in the wrong hands, those secrets could do nothing less than destroy the world. And Lethe has a very vested interest in making sure the world stays safe.

It's a complicated problem with a very simple solution, as far as Lethe's concerned. Either Kirigaya Kazuto needs to die to prevent those secrets from falling into the wrong hands, or those secrets need to be in Lethe's hands. And Lethe would much rather leave Kirigaya alive at the end of this mess; it's not his fault his head's stuffed full of the data, after all.

Which is why Lethe's here, on an unremarkable Sunday afternoon, dropping down beside Kirigaya on a bench in the middle of a busy shopping center. They're surrounded by people, hundreds of witnesses to what's about to take place, but for Lethe, that's really not a problem at all.

He leans over, just enough to get Kirigaya's attention. Enough to catch Kirigaya's eye as he smiles at Kirigaya like they're old friends — and by then, it's too late, soft, sticky-sweet syrup falling over Kirigaya's thoughts, drowning any alarm, turning everything in Kirigaya's head into warm, comfortably stifling molasses. ]

Hello, Kazuto. [ Lethe's voice is soft, pleasant, not threatening at all. Why would he need to be? ] You don't mind if we have a little chat, do you?

[ Kirigaya Kazuto — better known to the masses as Kirito, the Black Swordsman, the Beater. The boy who clambered out from a virtual hell with his sanity somehow still intact. The boy who walked out of one prison straight into another. Effective state custody isn't quite so constraining, no, but still it's restrictive; many a time has Kazuto wondered if he's merely switched to a new set of shackles, slipped a more insidious noose round his neck.

He holds no delusions as to why they're keeping him under surveillance. Sure, as they say, for protection. To protect him. To protect themselves from what he knows. Sword Art's offline, its creator forgotten, and of all those who were trapped in that prison only Kazuto got a good glimpse of the data within.

The only other people who could match his knowledge are currently half-dead tucked away in a bunker, if already they're not six feet under. Keeping him protected's common sense, same as letting him live is insurance. It's easier to think of it that way.

Understanding doesn't make living like this any easier though.

Hence Kazuto's already frustrated when, just as he'd given his security detail the slip for the second time this week, someone crops up beside him. Looks like they're getting better; usually it takes his guards around an hour or so to sniff him out of a crowd and get him back under surveillance. There's no doubt in his mind Lethe's one of the handlers; none of Kazuto's "fans" know what he looks like thanks to the state, and the last kidnapping attempt made it clear the people after him aren't up for small talk. He's this close to complaining when— ]

Ah...

[ Pretty, Kazuto thinks, momentarily gaping at a pair of bright yellow eyes. Curious, given he's never found another boy pretty in his life, let alone one so clearly his elder. What might have been a sarcastic remark gets stuck in treacle-like tar on the way to his lips, mouth left hanging open. A chat...? ]
