[Taking careful aim with his shooter marble, Mello sends it rolling directly towards the center of the new kid's skyscraper of cards.]

[wherever_youare]

[ Near can hear the marble rolling before he sees it and he knows exactly where it's headed. He pulls out a card from his deck and quickly moves an arm around his structure, blocking the marble. His perfect white sleeve brushes against the side of the cards and he holds his breath for a moment as they sway just slightly, but they remain standing.

Near looks over at the blonde with cold eyes and sends the marble rolling away in another direction. ]

[mello_dramatic]

[Well that's no fun! Why won't the white-haired boy play with him? Mello scowls and grabs a handful of smaller marbles out of their bag, then flings the whole lot of them at the tower.]

[wherever_youare]

[ Near goes very still, his darting from one marble to the other. He can't stop all of them this time and he tries to mentally prepare himself for the destruction of his tower. All the cards come toppling down and Near pulls a leg up against his chest, letting out a frustrated sigh.

He starts collecting the cards, one by one, then stops and starts collecting the marbles instead. ]

[mello_dramatic]

[YES! Now the boy is playing with him! Mello quickly sets up a row of marbles and flicks them in the other boy's direction, one by one.]

[wherever_youare]

[ Out of the corner of his eyes he can see the blonde haired boy setting up more marbles and he wonders if that first attempt was as malicious as he thought it was. There are no cards to knock over this time, but he can't imagine anyone would want to play with him.

But if he does, Near sets up the marbles originally flung at him, all in a row, and when he flicks them back, all the balls roll right next to the opposite ones, over to the other side. There's a perfectly symmetry to it all, and that, Near can handle.]

[mello_dramatic]

[Mello giggles and grabs for the marbles as they roll back to him, managing to catch most of them. The rest, he accidentally knocks away from his own grasp with his clumsy over-eager attempts.

During a lull, he shakes the rest of the marbles out of the bag and lines them up very close to each other, almost touching. Then he looks up at that other boy, hoping he's still paying attention.]

[ Near is absolutely still paying attention, catching all the marbles as they come at him and lining them up in another row. He lines them up directly opposite of the ones the blonde boy lines his up as and he waits for him to push them his way, before he uses a greater force to send his against them, they bounce like pool balls and all of them go rolling back toward Mello, only the two on the end skittering out.

There are other children watching them now, but Near is focused on one person only and there might even be the smallest smile on his face. This boy really is playing with him. The annoyance with the cards was only to get his attention ]

[It's not really a Thing. It's definitely not really a Thing. It's just that, now and then, Mordred thinks he catches something when he sees Izzy smiling. That something is tight and not quite fractured and infinitely familiar.

So it's not a Thing. It's just that, when they wind up sitting next to each other, Mordred is absolutely going to take a moment to see if he can rest his head lightly against her shoulder.

It's not really a Thing so much as a faint suspicion that she might need it too.]

[ Of course it's not a Thing. They don't like each other, and they certainly don't have anything in common.

Especially not a hollow space somewhere inside that is always aching to be filled.

Especially not a need to not let anyone know that it's there.

It's not a Thing, but when Mordred's head touches her shoulder, she leands her head to the side too so that it rests against his. ]

[beltaned]

[They don't need to acknowledge what's hollow. They don't need to make any note of what's broken in a way that can't clearly be fixed.

And they don't need to say anything about the fact she leans her head against his, or the quiet slump of something like relief as he lets himself rest properly.

Maybe the back of his hand can rest briefly against her leg as well. Maybe she'll put her hand over his.]

[izzybelle]

[ Maybe she will.

Maybe she'll fit her fingers in between his, and maybe that isn't something that needs to be talked about either. ]

[beltaned]

[Okay.

Okay, they'll just sit here. They'll sit here, and he'll have his head on her shoulder, and she'll hold onto his hand.

And they'll just... breathe. They'll breathe until someone gets too close and they have to untangle themselves before anyone realizes that, for half a second, they both needed something.

Maybe, if it lasts, he'll even close his eyes for a breath.]

[izzybelle]

[ And Izzy will keep her eyes open, not watching over him of course, just making sure that no one sees them like this.

Maybe her thumb will stroke his hand just a little. ]

[beltaned]

[Eventually, it's simply impossible not to shift closer.

In the odd sanctity of the moment, he feels certain she could swat him away and he would actually move back. Until she does, though, he'll be moving to get his chin hooked properly on her shoulder and his arms squirreled around her waist.

Holding and being held isn't something he's good at, but he's trying.]
