Bodhi kind of hates text conversations with Cassian. He's even more terse in writing than in person, and the lack of facetime renders him immune to Bodhi's variously amused, disappointed, quelling or horrified faces.

Bodhi pulls one of the latter when he closes the hood on Mr. Schott's 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra and retrieves both his lunch and settles into the breakroom with both his lunch and his phone.

Djem faked sick to stay home today. We talked. He's being bullied.

Appetite gone, Bodhi clutches his phone in both hands and rereads to be sure he's not hopscotching over some other relevant detail. The second text in the string reads only:

I promised him I wouldn't raise bloody hell at the school. I need you to hold me to that.

Why him, when his phone case is creaking a warning between white-knuckled fingers? Oh, he understands that he's meant to be less an anarchist than Cassian and Jyn, but Bodhi was a soldier and a whistleblower and now he's a father. The thought of Djem lying to them because some adolescent monster's making his school life miserable makes him want to forcefeed someone a box of nails. How's he supposed to be the voice of reason about this?

He needs more details. Information, or else there's no way he's not rushing home this second. Just this once, Cassian had better find the extra words.

are they hurting him? breaking his things? did he say if he'd told any of his teachers? what about his translator?? The state-appointed interpreter isn't as good as the one Djem had had through elementary school, and Bodhi's still not sure how he feels about the new woman. If she knew this was going on and overlooked it...

[Why should he say anything at all? It's all wound up in misunderstandings and sentiments and presumptions. Lies, or at least things they kept from one another and he'd like to think he'd gotten better but on reflection there's so much more to learn and it aches and that's why he refuses to think about it. Or tries not to think about it. Rejecting the thoughts as they come to him consistently and unendingly has got to be more exhausting than actually getting them out into the open and addressing them, right? Someone said that to him once, maybe he said it himself. Maybe Steve said it? Was it about talking or was it about fighting.

Besides. None of this was really their fault was it? Okay, maybe he was to blame for a lot of it.

They are two sides of the same coin and for that reason alone he's pretty stubbornly adopting the belief that they might never come to terms.
