The Haunted Meme

There are ghosts all around, at any time, lingering in places where they died or that were emotionally significant during their lives. Some of them refuse to give up the life they once lived, some have yet to accept that they have died, and some just want revenge against those who are still living.

Wherever you are, whatever you were doing, you've happened across a place where a particularly strong ghost (or maybe more than one?) is lingering. The ghost might try to possess you, using your body to do what it cannot, it might try to torment you in whatever ways it can, or it might just try to attack you. What will you do? Who you gonna call?

HOW IT WORKS:
Leave a comment with your character's name and canon, and your preferences. Remember that the ghosts can possess your character (influencing their actions or outright taking control of them) or torment them (exerting an outside influence or attacking).

Please respect others' preferences when tagging, and if a thread goes somewhere you aren't comfortable, communicate with your thread partner.


1) ANGRY This ghost either died angry or has become so over time. It might want to take out its anger on someone else, make noise, or hit or break things, whether by itself or using your character's body or special abilities.

2) VENGEFUL This ghost wants revenge. Maybe it's against someone who wronged them in life, maybe it's against their murderer, or maybe it's just against the living. They might mistake your character for the target, or use their body to exact their vengeance.

3) REGRETFUL This ghost is much sadder and quieter, consumed by regrets of things unsaid and never done. They might just lurk about and increase the emo factor, or they could drive your character into despair.

4) DEMANDING This ghost wants something done. Maybe they want a message delivered or a hidden treasure found. Or maybe they just want to force your character to compete a task. Whatever it is, they won't stop demanding it until they're satisfied.

5) LUSTFUL Being a ghost gets very lonely. Maybe they want to possess your character to experience the pleasures of the flesh once more. Maybe the ghosts of star-crossed lovers will drive two people together. Or maybe your character might just feel an intangible hand copping a feel...

6) OBLIVIOUS This ghost doesn't realize it's dead. They might resent your character's presence or mistake them for the real ghost. Or they could accidentally inhabit your character's body and try to continue their normal routine.

7) INHUMAN This ghost isn't the spirit of a person, but something else. Maybe an animal, maybe a creature thought to be imaginary, maybe an alien that hitched a ride on a meteor, whatever it was it wasn't normal. And if it possesses your character, neither are they.

Might I suggest lending your assistance to the Captain, sir? No heat signatures at all? None that the system has picked up on thus far. Electromagnetic waves, anything. Get the electrons around Cap moving in orbits around the nucleus of atoms, arrange them in different energy levels within their probability distribution functions. Sir, that will promote the waves to an inherently unstable higher energy level. I know that JARVIS. Do it for a tenth of a second when we hit the dead generator and use a direct current, take a picture so it lasts longer. ]

[They say you never hear the one that gets you. Carter certainly didn't.

The ghost has occupied the ruins of a German AA battery. It's demolished but amazingly a few of the guns are still there, surrounded by half-fallen walls overgrown with weeds and moss. If you pass through on a cold autumn night you might just see a soft glow emanating through the cracks in the walls.

Carter's playing a game of solitaire by ghostly lamplight. Every few minutes he walks up to the gun turret, watches the sky, sighs, and walks back to his game. He's waiting for those bombers to show up so he can take them out of the sky and strike a blow for freedom. Ten minutes later the cycle is repeated again...and again...and again...

The bombers showed up seventy years ago. And yet Carter's still waiting.]

[Most of them mean well. He tries to remind himself of that. Like...well, not Kalina, obviously, but Damon. And he himself never meant any harm, exactly. But ignorance can be worse than anything, and Dennis is acutely aware of just how badly and quickly things can go wrong. All it takes is one person to accidentally rile something up. Or rile something up on purpose.

He doesn't know why he's still around, but he figures he might as well be useful. Keep the amateurs from getting their asses haunted to death; keep anybody else from following in Cyrus' footsteps.

Most of their equipment doesn't actually work, which works better for Dennis: he can appear as he did in life, instead of as a blood-stained walking head wound, like he knows he would through spectral viewers. That would drive people away, and sure, that is the end goal. But sometimes it's nice to have a conversation first.]

[There's a ghost that wanders the courthouse. People keep claiming to find things out of place, or cabinets snapping open, or the vending machine consistently breaking despite it working just fine a minute ago. It's not actively malicious, there's no possessions or flying sharp objects, but something is clearly not pleased.

Badd walks in the shadows, trying to hold together the shattered remnants of his soul. It would be so easy to slip away but he has a reason to be here. He needs justice--not for his own murder, but for the blood of others. He will not go away until the guilty are brought to court and sentenced.

But no one will talk to him, and chucking pencils at the back of Gant's head is amusing but not productive.]

Sebastian's always felt more comfortable in this part of the world. London is too grey, too bland, and too goddamn cold. After the business with that Sherlock fucker, Sebastian had gone to India. Not looking for work; he had a job, after all. Jim could go days, weeks, without contacting Sebastian, depending on his own fucking whimsy. Sebastian just picked a place to hunker down, and wait it out. The call always came.

It had been almost three months, and now Sebastian is drunk. Stretched out in a tiny-ass bungalow, bottle of whiskey within reach of his fingertips. It stopped him moving, leaving, flying back to London and tearing apart every flat Jim had that Sebastian knew about, finding that little fucker, and asking him how the fuck he'd made the shot through his brain look so real.

And why he hadn't called. But that was secondary, and Sebastian figured he knew the answer. Jim did love his little games.]

[It was supposed to be a quiet camping trip, but someone had started telling ghost stories and someone else had mentioned a "haunted" house nearby and then dares had been exchanged and nothing would do but for all of them to go investigate right away, in the middle of the night. And of course, Yukiko had somehow managed to get separated from the others, and now stands out front of the house, staring at it and trying not to shiver.

As abandoned houses go it certainly does fit the look of one that might be haunted, and after a moment Yukiko hurries off in the direction she can hear voices. She knew this was a bad idea.]

[The theatre has been closed for years. Even the boards on the door seem to be dusty. The little door at the back is broken open, where some homeless wretch or two tried to crawl in and find a safe place to sleep, but few who enter last the night. It's the singing that does it. The beautiful yet incomprehensible singing that entices you and keeps you awake, driving you near mad with its passion and then driving you to ruin when you are found lacking.

In life the ghost wrote a song, the most wonderful song of his career, but a tragic theatre accident took his life before it could be performed. It was a duet, you see...it cannot be performed alone. The ghost has yet to find a voice that will complete its unearthly music.]

[Abe doesn't like exorcisms. His partner prefers an enemy they can just shoot, beat, or burn until it stops becoming a problem but you can't do that with ghosts. Ghosts require a gentler, more intellectual touch.

Which is why Abe is in the house alone. His long, webbed fingers trail the walls as he sucks up up information about the house's recent past. He's only picking up the general details--say, the amount of information one might get by reading a Wikipedia summary of a movie--but some definite insanity went down here.]
