THE CHILDHOOD MEME

Childhood. That magical time between infancy and adulthood where you feel invincible. Where you haven't a care or responsibility in the world. It's a time where imagination runs wild and every day is a new adventure waiting to be had.

While there's plenty of fun out there in the world of adults, there's nothing that quite compares to the innocence of those early years. So, grab your juice box, your favorite toy and remember to be back before the streetlights come on.

HOW TO PLAY:

○ This meme is targeted toward the younger end of the age spectrum (15 and under), but that doesn't mean older characters aren't welcome. Does your character have a soft spot for children? Are they typically the type to be the babysitter? Or maybe they're the older sibling being dragged along to keep an eye on the younger one? Aging down is also an acceptable option, haven't we all wondered what our characters would have been like as kids?

1. PLAYGROUND/PARK : The spot where all the best childhood memories are made. Are you playing a game of tag? Are you hanging upside down on the jungle gym? Are you getting into trouble while your mom is catching up on the latest gossip?

2. SCHOOL : The place where 75% of your day is spent and lifelong friendships are forged. Maybe you're in art class, maybe you're at recess, or maybe you're on a school field trip. The possibilities are endless. Just don't be that kid eating paste.

3. MALL : For the kids on the older end of the spectrum. Whether you're at the arcade, whether you're meeting with friends, or whether your parents gave you twenty bucks to get out of their hair, you've got the entire shopping mall at your disposal.

4. CIRCUS : It's the greatest show on earth! Lion tamers! Acrobats! Elephants! Feats meant to stun and amaze you! Cotton candy the size of your head! Are you watching the show from the stands? Or is your family a part of the show?

5. THEME PARK/AMUSEMENT PARK : It's a classic vacation that's fun for the whole family. Are you the roller coaster type? Or are you the type to shy away from the thrill rides and stick to the carousel instead? Keep a hold of someone's hand, though, the only thing that can ruin a day is a lost child in the park.

6. FAIR/FESTIVAL/CARNIVAL : The theme park on a smaller scale. Sometimes the rides are a little shaky, but there's plenty of good deep fried foods and games to be played. Go out and win yourself a goldfish!

7. NEVERLAND : Yes, you read that right. Just like in Peter Pan, it's the magical place where no one has to ever grow up and adults aren't welcome. What kind of adventures will you get into? Remember, it only takes a little bit of fairy dust and good thoughts to fly.

8. WILDCARD : None of these work for you? Go ahead and created your own!

[AU'd Gyda into modern times: instead of vikings, her father's leader of a motorcycle gang and runs the local auto shop? Say Gyda's outside tinkering with some very old motorcyle?

[ everyone in town knows about ragnar's gang. mostly they don't bother the locals, instead engaging in turf wars with another town, but bev's learned to keep her head up when she hears the rumble of motorcycles coming down the street.

which means she's on alert when her route home from school takes her past the auto shop. at first, she only spots the motorcycle, but wheeling her own pedal bike past, she spots the girl hunched over with her tools.

she looks...way too young to be in a gang? did someone bully her into this? ]

Hey! You OK?

[Her mother had picked her from school a half hour ago, and she'd been working in the garage since. With her father's gang around, she was aware most other children avoided the area, and if she saw anyone it was at their house.

Which was why, when she saw a girl from school ride by and call out, she actually looked up in surprise. Most kids usually walked or rode quickly past the shop, they didn't stop by it.] Hi!..Um..yes, why?

[The bike she was working on was little more than a shell, but her dad insisted it was a good building block for her.]

Nuh-uh. No way.

(Eddie's head looks like it could fall off with how hard he was shaking it back and forth. The State Fair was already a fucking cesspool of walking hazards, and Eddie wasn't so dumb as to think that any one of these rides were actually regulated or properly maintained. The staggering roller coaster that sat in front of him looked like a death trap. That thing was probably assembled by a bunch of lazy, underpaid teenagers who couldn't give a shit if one of the screws wasn't tightened all the way.

The rest of the fair was fine enough. Eddie was the number one person to beeline it to numerous food vendors to pick up ice cream, funnel cake, and slushies. But this is where he had to draw the line. One hand rested on his hip and he raised his other hand, pointing it straight at the roller coaster. He turns to look Bev straight in the eye to convey how serious he was.)

That thing is a fucking death trap. Do you know how many people fall out of them per year? I heard on one of those dropping-ones, a kid lost his fucking legs. I don't know about you, but I'm pretty fond of all my limbs. I like them, you know, attached.

You're just saying that because you ate so much.

[ from the depths of bev's eyes, only warmth and mild amusement. it's not that she genuinely expects eddie to do anything unsafe. but, on the other hand, if eddie didn't do anything he was afraid of, he'd be missing out on... a lot. ]

We're watching, and I haven't seen anyone fall out of this one.

[ still gently teasing, but also: would that be so hard to imagine in maine? even at a state fair, it's hard not to go right to worst-case scenarios. ]

[ bev gestures with the armful of small, cheaply made stuffed animals that she won in the ring toss, squirt guns, and knocking over milk bottles section of the fair. she finally got banned, but not before obtaining a knock-off tony the tiger, a bear with a big blue bow around its neck, and an overstuffed gray elephant. ]

[Max is no longer the new girl in school, and she's more than okay with that. People here are one of two kinds, in her experience: overly interested in everything about her, or cold as ice. Neither one tends to be particularly pleasant.

The hallways are buzzing with interest about the new girl, though she hasn't heard a name. Mostly she just rolls her eyes at all the gossip because it's ridiculous. She shuts her locker and heads toward class when she happens to spot the person everyone is talking about, but not to. Most of the girls here are too stuck up for their own good and the boys were either assholes, or too afraid to actually talk to a girl without stalking her first. Ahem.

Max, however, makes a quick decision and approaches her with a friendly smile.]

Hey. Welcome to Hawkins. I'm Max.

[every sound is agonizingly too loud. Kara walks down the hallway and has to fight against a shudder every time a locker is slammed shut, and all the voices! Everyone's talking at once, drowning out every thought she could have, and it's so hard to navigate the hallways here. everything is close and cramped and bright and not at all like Krypton, and she misses her home so much it literally hurts.

Kara's putting up some of her books, closing the locker door as gently as she can, but the vibration from the other students doing the same still clangs around her head. she startles when the girl comes up behind her with a greeting and a friendly smile. no one's spoken to Kara today, just asking Alex questions about her or making up their own stories.

Kara stares at the girl for a long moment. her hair is gorgeous, like Aunt Astra's, but bright red like Krypton's sun, and Kara is still overwhelmed. Her hand comes up to her chest to wind around her mother's necklace in a tight grip.

when she speaks, it's barely above a whisper because gauging how loud she should be compared to everything else is hard.]

Um. Hi. I'm Kara.

[She's not really sure what to make of the other girl staring at her. Maybe she's just shocked that someone actually approached her directly. A faint smile touches her mouth at the memory of her second day of school here, when Lucas and Dustin had approached her, Dustin talking about bullies and how she had no friends, and then invited her to go Trick or Treating with them. She hadn't anticipated anything like that, and she hadn't really known what to do with it, so she'd resorted to her usual sarcasm, pretending to be insulted.

She hadn't been, really. She'd just needed a bit of time to let it sink in.]

Hey, Kara. [She's not sure why she's whispering, but there's no mistaking the emotions on her face.]

You seem a little overwhelmed. You wanna hit the water fountains before your next class?

[What are water fountains? There's fountains on Krypton, but they're gigantic sculptures, usually outside. why would they go hit those? Kara would probably break them.]

I... I suppose. I thought we weren't supposed to leave until the end of the day?

[Max's eyebrows furrow a little at that and it takes her a moment to figure out what the other girl is probably thinking about. She must have been home schooled or something.]

Oh. No, they're just - up the hall? [Max points at them, centered between the girls room and the boys room.]

[Kara doesn't see any fountains there, just the doors to the toilets and between them, these two gray boxes that buzzed so loudly when she passed them that Kara swore she could see them vibrating. Still, this girl... Max, she's offering to show her where something is, and Kara needs to fit in desperately or else Alex will never like her. So, she nods.]

Oh, okay. Lead the way. [she gives Max a faint, nervous smile after that.]

[She gives Kara a reassuring look before turning to head toward the water fountain.]

My first day here was just a couple months ago. It sucked. I mean this place isn't so bad, but right at first everything was overwhelming. You'll be okay, though.

[Max presses the button on the water fountain and water arches up and she takes a drink before stepping aside.]

What's your next class?

[Kara nods.] Overwhelming... yeah. Definitely.

[Kara tilts her head as she watches Max use the... water fountain? It's so ugly, but she guesses it does the job, hence the name. They never drank from their fountains at home, though. They were decorative, lavish. This is odd.

Still, she steps up to the fountain next to Max and copies her, startling a bit when she presses the button too hard, the metal bending in with a thumb-shaped indentation oops, and the water spurts out super high. But she lessens her grip, glancing nervously at Max and hoping she didn't notice anything. She sticks her tongue out, catching a bit of the water and lapping some in her mouth.

This has upgraded from "odd" to "dumb," but Kara's not going to say that. She doesn't want to hurt Max's feelings. She wipes her mouth off on her sleeve and opens her binder with her schedule in it.]

Um... pre-Algebra. [a pre-school class. why?]

[She smiles faintly as the other girl admits she's feeling overwhelmed. You have her sympathies, Kara. Some days here are still overwhelming to Max. She has no idea how much differently, but, the empathy is there regardless.

She misses the momentary struggle Kara has, turning to wave at Lucas, who grins at her before vanishing into his classroom. She sighs inaudibly and leans back against the wall, rolling her head to look at her, making a face.]

Ugh. Math. Not my thing. [She shrugs a little.] But if you aren't sure where the classroom is, I can take you by it. I have science next.

[Ah! Algebra was math, okay. Math she can do. She nods at Max, closing her binder and hugging it to her chest.]

Could be a darker scenario that leads to him having to take care of a kid, or an AU where he actually has a blood-relative child. Young mutants that Charles has sensed and convinced James to take in??? I'm up for anything as long as it stays gen! ]

First things first, she decides and crosses her arms over her chest. "I don't need you. And I don't need to be parented. I just need an adult so people stop calling the police on me."

What Charles said about that - that as a child her age she would have it a lot easier in every way if she has a 'responsible adult' with her, did make sense. But she just wants to have it made clear that she does not need someone acting like they can boss her around just because she's under 10.

....Maybe an introduction would have been in order before saying the things she said, but. #priorities.

At least the fact that her eyes are yellow and formed like those of a cat might make it obvious that she's a mutant?

James is too tired for this.

When Charles told him there was a mutant hanging about, there was little proof for James to conceivably believe him. Sad as it was, Charles was prone to going off about nonsense. The mentor that he'd had the past three decades was slowly being lost to the vulnerabilities of the human mind.

But Charles wouldn't shut up about it. At first James had thought he was talking of a different Kitty -- that maybe he was haunted by some image of Shadowcat. Caliban was starting to lose his mind too, however, with Charles' incessant ramblings, and that was the only reason James decided to pay Charles' long distance friend a visit.

In any case, he doesn't know if he's happy to be proven wrong or not.

She has an attitude, which is already a big 'no' in James' book. In fact, he's so irritated by it all that he ends up staring in silence for a good handful of seconds, asking himself if Charles' happiness was really worth taking care of such a mouthy little brat.

When he does come to a decision, however, it's obvious. Because he shakes his head and says, "No chance in hell."

And without further ado, turns away to return to his limo, unable to believe he drove all this way for that.

"Good."

She's going to interpret the man's words the way she pleases.

Mostly because she promised Charles to go with James, and well. It means something. it's the first time in years that she has actually, properly promised something and meant it. And also it's absolutely in Charles' power to hound her about it, and while she has no idea if he would, she won't risk it.

And in her interpretation, that was a 'no chance I'd try to parent you'.

Which is ideal in her opinion, and thus she'll follow him to the limo and, if she can find a door that isn't locked, get in before he can drive off.

[ She's a single mum to adopted 4 year old twin boys, so I'm open to her being a babysitter, a parental figure, or to even fostering another child! ]

[She's either a cat shapeshifter from Shadowrun or Beast-seeming Changeling from CtL, just tell me which one you'd prefer.

or running away.]
