[ Consciousness curled around him softly, his eyes fluttering open and for once he didn't jerk awake or have to hold back any screams. It probably had to do with the grounding weight settled on top of him, making him feel protected against the images often repeating in his mind.

Gazing downwards, his fingers brushed through Rae's hair and he knew in that instant he would do anything for him. He would find a way to move mountains if he had to.

Shifting some, he ran his thumb along Rae's bottom lip, a hitch in his breath as he did so.

[ There were a few things that Jae had admittedly missed when he was a vampire - and being able to enjoy rest through the night and waking up with a partner was definitely one of them. Or even the possibility to enjoy the morning with any one of his partners either way.

this is finally old enough that i can comment but i hate that there are only 47 comments

( what he's learned is that second chances are hard to come by. most people aren't afforded them and some -- a chosen few -- are living off them. borrowed time. being a survivor of a brutal massacre, Eugene's been made more than aware of his luck in second chances. they seem to come in many forms, sometimes as curses that look like gifts and gifts that look like curses. distinguishing is an art, and one that he's yet to properly nail.

but he's pretty sure that with the bright and early tease of the sun's rise over the horizon, now is one of those times where he's granted a clear second chance. waking up next to a mistake tends to not be an ideal setup for redemption or a do-over, but if it's too good to be true then it isn't true. things need to be a bit messy to be believed, and blearily watching a golden light from outside reflect on pallid skin and smooth columns of a muscular back, he realizes he isn't dreaming and last night wasn't a dream either.

naturally, he tenses as another realization rolls over the other one, pushing it down to obscurity as alarms ring in his head: he's clinging to said back, holding on to it like it's something precious, or something he desperately wants to be precious. fingers clutched like it's an instrument he can make meaning of, like he can project and play to the right tune and suddenly everything last night was meaningful instead of

messy, clumsy, fucking weird, painful,

t-..................... toothy.

it's as if the wounds manifest the moment he recalls them, prickling up against his own skin and digging themselves shallow graves in his flesh. he grimaces, less at the pain (that was sort of ok) and more at the embarrassment of it all, the meaninglessness of it all, the way it contradicts everything he's told himself to do with this kind of situation.

it should only be for love, right? a reborn virgin or whatever? well, he can start back at zero from now on. right. he just has to let go. but is this guy even awake? it's rude to leave without notice, without a gift, without thanks at the effort put forth to give him all of the good that came with the bad. but he wants to fight him for seducing him away from his goals and away from his own standards. without realizing it, he's clutching him more tightly — something he rectifies quickly by gently sliding his hands down to his waist, propping a bit of weight on one elbow before realizing it's trapped beneath Crowley. and he can't feel his arm, at all. he's hoping it's asleep rather than devoured. maybe it needs to be amputated now? he thinks he's wriggling it from beneath him, but he can't feel it and nothing seems to be budging. particularly the big lug of a guy on top of it, so he withdraws his free arm from around his waist to gently tug at his braid and raise his head to try and peek over Crowley's shoulder.

he's hoping to catch sight of a peaceful and resting face rather than something. awake. why is the thought of him being awake so terrifying? it just is. he has to sleep for the next 5 months while Eugene processes everything that happened and why he had to roleplay as crowley's dead friend )
