Institutionalized

You woke up this morning to find everything is different. You're in a mental hospital, all of your belongings down to your clothing are gone, and the staff are calling you by a different name. They're very kind and sympathetic to you as they explain that your life, your name, everything that you thought was real was in fact just a delusion. You'd been dreaming, living a lie of a life in your mind, and now that you're here you're getting better.

If you speak to the other patients, you'll find that many of them seem to be in the same situation. Some have been here longer than others, but none have found a way out. Some of them claim they're supposed to look like something other than the ordinary-seeming humans they appear to be. But none have any access to whatever special powers or abilities they remember having.

Every now and then, though, a patient will just...vanish. No warning, no explanation given, and if the staff are asked they insist no one by that name or description has ever been in the hospital.

It could be that you really are crazy. Your life could really have been a lie. Maybe you're even inventing the other people in the hospital with you. What is real and what isn't?

That's up to you to decide.

[It's a mental hospital. There's plenty of people here who talk to themselves. But the gap-toothed redhead is the only one who spends his time singing to himself. The loss has hit him hard, the denial of his career even harder, and he's withdrawn from the doctors with their lies and false sympathy. The music is his only comfort.

He's huddled up by the window now, watching the rain come down on the flowerbeds outside the hospital. Every so often he shoots a glance at the other patients, hoping to see some flicker of a response to his song.]

[Hermes is not immensely bothered by the mental hospital. They take care of him and tend to his needs, much as his Boss had done back when he was an octopus. It's this body that he's been having trouble with. It doesn't bend in any but the most rudimentary of ways and it's got bones everywhere in it. Locomotion alone took him a few days to master, and then his escape was halted by the concept of a doorknob.

But Hermes keeps the old traditions alive. He'd stolen an orderly's lunchbox while their back was turned and successfully smuggled it into a small dark place to consume at his leisure...and then once again his fingers collaborated against him.

So now there's a young man sprawled on the floor of the single-stall women's bathroom, a latched lunchbox in his lap and an expression of mild annoyance on his face. He's prodding the latch, trying to jerk it open, but coordinating ten bony fingers attached to two limbs is much harder than eight tentacles.]

Tardis (Dr. Who) - OTA

The staff all called him 'Thomas', though he insisted, and often, that it was Tardis. He was also, occasionally, confused by having the wrong parts. Not that he should have been a woman, no, he should have been a blue box.

[TARDIS is the word that catches Oswin's attention when she hears it whispered by some of the nurses. She's had to chose her questions very, very carefully to avoid suspicion, but after an investigation, she's finally found out all she could.

No one else could know that word but other people that have traveled with the Doctor. And if there's someone here claiming to be the TARDIS, Oswin will take it as it is. It's not the weirdest thing to have ever happened.

And, there's some little hope that the TARDIS might recognize her, if it's (she's? he's?) become human somehow. Some way to confirm that all of this actually happened.

In the day room, Oswin carefully approaches, making sure none of the staff are listening in.]

Kurt doesn't much like this place. While they call it an institution, it feels more like a prison to him. When they started rounding up mutants and similar types into these places, it was only a matter of time before they caught up to him.

Now he wore a collar that prevented him from using his teleporting ability outside the neural field surrounding the building. He had tried time and again to escape but to no end.

There were pills and tests, needles and padded rooms. No, Kurt really did not like it here. Most of the time, when they weren't poking him, he would sit by himself in the darkest corner he could find. Trying to disappear, but never quite able to.

[Her day started off like it had for the past week, with screaming and threatening the staff that if they didn't let her out and back to the Department of Defense at once that the military would send in a team to extract her.

And of course it ended with them telling her once again she wasn't military, nor did she ever work for the Department of Defense, nor was her name Charisa Sosa. All this happening while they injected a shot into her arm to help calm her down.

Now she was curled up in the corner upon a rocking chair, looking around at those who milled the room. New faces mixed with old while some of the old didn't seem to be around anymore.

There were times this place didn't feel real and other times when it felt like she'd been here her whole life. Answers were needed.]

[Alice feels ya, bro. She's just gotten let out of suicide watch, after she finally told the doctor all the pretty little lies he wanted to hear. There's bandages around her arms and a plaster on a long cut across her face.

Not suicide. That was foolish and pointless, as she'd told the doctors. She'd been trying to cut herself open to find the metal struts hidden underneath her skin. They had to be there if she just dug deep enough, if she ignored how much it hurt and how much fluid was spurting from the wounds.

But people seemed to frown on that around here. Alice flopped into a chair in the rec room, glaring at her surroundings.] Fuck the system.

Charles was one of the patients who claimed to have supernatural powers. He claimed to be able to read minds, though he hadn't shown any proof of this, and some days grew increasingly frustrated when he couldn't.

Today was not a good day.

Being thought mad was nothing new, not at all; the bars and walls changed, the faces were odd and the clothes odder still, but an asylum was an asylum whether they strapped you to your bed or let you wander free under watchful eyes. Kindness, they called it, parroting phrases about "nurturing" and "guiding" until she wondered if they were tending to the mad or raising cattle and eyed the orderlies askance, waiting for the masks to fall and the beatings to begin.

On this day Alice paces into the common area with intent, aiming directly toward the chair where she'd hidden a deck of cards the afternoon previous. She'd wished to see if they remained, if the staff searched as well as they should, because if they did not she could perhaps amass a cache of weapons; weapons not so useful as her usual cards, perhaps, but she could find a way. She would always find a way.

The chair in question was occupied, however, and she halted in front of the man with arms akimbo, eyes narrowed with suspicion. "I require that chair," she informed him, in a tone that allowed no argument.

Arthur (Inception) - OTA

Arthur was one of the ones on suicide watch, though not for the usual reasons, pills, cutting, playing in traffic.

No, Arthur had, twice now, tried to drop himself from the roof of the building. He had a monitor on his ankle that sounded an alarm if he went any higher than the second floor.

He hated it.

How ironic. The psychotherapist, trapped in a psych ward. Vladik is still not sure this is completely real. The mental world is usually far more surreal, and for something this clean and sterile the owner of the mind must have some very serious problems.

And nothing works. His psychic abilities are muffled as surely as if someone had taken a scalpel to his brain and scooped them all out. It's intensely frustrating.

And it doesn't help that his original attempt at levitation had been...badly misinterpreted. He'd tried to play it off as a simple loss of balance, far too familiar with hospital procedure not to play along, but it would be a few days before they trusted him again.

Though they can't be too good of a hospital. They've given him a roommate. "Good evening," Vladik says as he's ushered inside. He tries to smile. Let's at least keep this courteous all around.

Aja was fairly mild, as far as patients went, though she did, occasionally, make claims to have been part of a special ops team, and that she have a rebuilt vintage Sopwith Camel at her disposal.

Clint 'Hawkeye' Barton - MCU - OTA

Clint Barton was under the impression that he was going to be 'rescued' at any time by a group known as The Avengers. He'd been asked to describe them once, and had subsequently been asked if he realized how ridiculous that sounded.

He hadn't said anything about it since. In fact, he hadn't said much of anything since, just biding his time.

It started as just a flash in the shiny surface of the med cart being pushed around the ward. The tall, dark shadow of a man who featured so heavily in Clint's hallucinations. Just a flicker and he was gone, maybe it had been just another figment of his imagination?

But then it kept happening at random intervals. Flashes of Loki from the corner of his eye, a mocking laugh echoing down the hallway he was walking down. No one else ever saw him however and they were only flickers and fragments of an illusion perhaps.
