Seriously man, this shit has got to stop. A part of him's curious as to how blind people have nightmares, sure, but he sure as shit didn't ask for this. He knew the altar boy hadn't been the same since he got almost buried alive, but for Christ's sake Frank was not the Salvation Army. If Matt had a problem he needed to see a shrink. (Yeah, fine, hypocritical coming from Lieutenant I-Don't-Have-PTSD, but he doesn't crash Matt's couch when Maria gets shot over and over and over and over again)

"Oi." He gave the distressed lawyer a rough shove, hoping to wake him up. When that didn't work he was tempted to fire off a round right next to his ear, but he didn't want Matt suddenly waking up and eating that bullet to his temple.

[Technically speaking, there's nothing in his job description that includes extending relief from or consolation after nightmares.

The thing is, though, that his relationship with Noctis stopped being a job long ago, and as such the finer points of what his duties are supposed to entail have effectively become moot — however handy they might be as an excuse or an offhand justification of something or another on the day to day. It makes it easier, for example, to pretend as though there's a certain natural reciprocity to it, an equivalent exchange of service for reward. It keeps things straightforward, easily digested.

It means that he doesn't have to attempt to codify or explain the lengths to which he's willing to go for Noct. He doesn't have to try to put into words the fact that there is nothing on this earth he wouldn't do, if Noctis needed him to. He doesn't have to deal in words that will almost certainly be perceived as hyperbole when in fact he means them in their plainest and most objective form. And he doesn't have to try to express that he needs nothing in return for that devotion, expects nothing, offers it wholly unilaterally with no expectations or strings ever attached.

He doesn't need to be told to be there for Noctis. He doesn't need the veneer of a duty or a position. He's willing to give all of himself for Noctis simply because Noctis is Noctis, and he's long since decided that's more than enough to be worth it to him.

If he's asked about it later, he'll certainly say that what ended up rousing him from his sleep in the early hours before dawn this morning was the sound of Noctis having a bad time of it, and there really will be a measure of truth to that. The part he'll leave out is that the other half of what woke him was a nightmare of his own — the same one he always has, in different variants and permutations. The one that comes in notions of chasing something he can never catch, of fighting a horde of enemies he can never subdue, of arriving to a catastrophe too late to prevent it, of having his glasses knocked from his face and the whole world going blurry in a time when what he needs most is to see.

His nightmares always come with the undercurrent of helplessness. With futility. With failure.

So in a way, it's sort of a relief to be able to roll over and focus on Noctis instead of on himself. It helps both of them, in its fashion — to Noct by providing relief, and to Ignis by giving him the means to be useful, to succeed, to know that Noctis needed him even in some small and infinitesimal way, and he was there.]
