There's one truth you must know of royalty: though power may lay in their hands, the crown is a cage. Whether you've always been noble, came into this position recently by complete surprise, or a simple person caught in the fray, you're realizing that leaders actually lead very little - even down to choosing who they spend their most intimate moments with. From eternal bonds of matrimonies to the distractions provided by courtesans, the people behind the throne make the rules. They cannot risk losing control of their most elevated and strategically placed pawn with a match gone wrong, which could create a domino effect and doom possibly thousands.

So, what part do you play in this game?

• Lifetime Royal: This is what you've been raised to do.
• Sudden Royal: You just learned of your position, which has been secret from you your entire life, or you unexpectedly inherited the job.
• Spouse: You're to be married to nobility.
• Concubine or Courtesan: For the royal, you're to be a sexual diversion.
• Unaffiliated: You're either a lower-ranking noble or a peasant, but you're free from all the machinations of the shadowy cabal...for now.

How willing are you?

• Completely Willing: Either you love the person you know you'll be matched with, or you're excited about the possibilities.
• Wary: There's no choice in the matter for you, so you may as well approach this situation cautiously.
• Unwilling: You didn't want to be matched up with someone. At all. Ever.

What path will you follow, once you're set upon it (there is, after all, little choice for the chosen ones)?

1. Prepared for This: Either you're a royal and have been one since birth, or you knew you'd marry or sexually entertain one.
2. Make Up for Lost Time: This life wasn't the one you lived until now, but times change. You're important or will be a companion to a very important person, like it or not.
3. A Sacrificial Token: Somewhere along the line, your people royally pissed off someone in a key position. So, in an attempt to smooth out relations, you've been given away as a gift to the highest power, either as a spouse for a political alliance or as a concubine or courtesan.
4. Pomp and Circumstance: All proper, this arrangement. You're to be married, as you've been promised to each other by your respective families. Consummation on the wedding night is key. Perhaps it's encouraged that the two of you act as if this is really a love match, to add insult to injury.
5. Genuine Love: Speaking of love matches, congratulations! You're one of the incredible few who gets to marry for love, so your lovemaking should be all the more enthused.
6. Only a Plaything: Heavy is the head who wears the crown, so you're expected to take on some side entertainment even if that's not your preference. Or you could be the courtesan...such a pretty, perfumed word for what the role really is...
7. Volunteered: You wanted this position, either of spouse or concubine. Your reasons are your own.
8. Cruel: You're powerful. You can do what you want to this person, a mere ant in comparison to you.
9. Forbidden: Even the most powerful can't have everything they want, such as someone who's promised to or with another; taking them for your own would create strife and destroy alliances, even to the point of tempting war.
10. Work Your Way Up: There's always a right tool for the job and you find no shame in using your own special tools to better your life.
11. Give Me an Heir: Whether you're legitimate or a concubine used as a surrogate, you must help in continuing the royal line.
12. Mutual Benefit: Both of you are comfortable with this arrangement because you're either compatible or it takes the pressure off of you otherwise.
13. Want to be More: Though you've been relegated to courtesan, you want to be there one and only spouse...no matter if that role is already filled or not.
14. Growing Affection: It may have started as all puppet strings and power plays, but now, you lo- care for them.
15. Loved Before: Before you became so important and powerful, before you became the focus of all the world, it seems, they were there with you. They were with you then, and you want them to be with you now. They ground you and they care about you for you.
16. Because You're Normal: They're outside of all the court's nonsense, and that's appealing to you. It's like a breath of fresh air.

[Life in Coburg is simple. It's something he'll miss when it comes time to depart for the English court. It might be any day now, if the rumors are true. They say that the English Queen Charlotte's health is failing and the poor woman has never been able to produce a child that lived past two years old. That leaves her cousin as her heir presumptive, even if Victoria has spent most of her life in Germany with her own cousins.

Albert doesn't remember a time when Victoria and her mother didn't live with them. She may have been raised with them, but he's never considered her as a sister. She's never been simply a future queen to him either. He doesn't know when it changed or how or if he's always been in love with her since before he even knew what love meant. But she is meant for great things and he is the second son of a poor duchy.

She is his best friend. He wants nothing more than to keep her by his side, when he knows that she cannot keep him by hers.

It's enough to live the lie a little while longer. At least that was the plan when he stopped by her rooms intending to ask her to come riding with him this afternoon, only to find her and her servants surrounded by several trunks. It seems the time has come. He's thought that he and Ernst would travel with her when the time came, as Leopold is their uncle as well, but it could be just as likely that they are left behind.]

It's far from uncommon for Companions to find their way to Asgard, and even less so for it to be at the request of a member of the ruling house. Who better, after all, to call upon for the creature comfort of another's company, to ask to stand at one's side to share an evening or two or five with while entertaining distinguished guests, than those not only respected for their status and craft but who valued the confidentiality of their clients above all else?

Loki has used them frequently in the past, both as his official guests as a prince of Asgard and to share his time whenever he longed for intelligent, clever company, keeping a small pool of men and women he knew to be compatible with himself in mind whenever he should have need of them, and for years it was an arraignment that suited him well. The one clear benefit to being the youngest son was that his responsibilities to marry were far less pressing than that of Thor, long enough in the distance that Loki was free to choose cleaner, easier, mutually beneficial relationships over the messy tangle of anything even vaguely resembling love or romance a while yet. And then--

And then came Tony Stark.

A recommendation from one of his favored Companions when she was unable to come to him. Sinfully clever, she had insisted. Sharp-witted and honey-tongued, an absolutely delight to have in attendance for engagements that needed a little life injected into them, and Loki had to admit that he'd been more than a little curious to see if this man would be everything he'd been promised as.

He'd been more than, if possible. Handsome and charismatic and too intelligent for his own good, charming even when the words coming off his tongue would have brought offense from any one else and leaving Loki far too amused to even consider chiding him for it despite the few sharp looks Odin had cast their way. If the banquet had been been a wonderful surprise, it had been nothing compared to the time they got to spent together alone-- nothing but the quiet of Loki's rooms and the silk of his bedsheets, of breathless laughter crackling up between shared sounds of pleasure and the unwound relaxed comfort of the moments with nothing more pressing to be concerned with than soft fingertips against skin and the soft murmurs exchanged between them.

That had been years ago, more than Loki cared to count, and since then it was only ever Tony that Loki requested to share his company, much to the dismay of the Companions Loki use to favor most, and while it isn't unusual either for someone to exclusively call upon one Companion for their time--

It's warned in the beginning that to see a Companion's company as anything other than a business arrangement is disastrously foolish. They're professionals in their field and the service that they provide is just that: a service, one bought and paid for, a contract entered into with the understanding that fond regard, that affection, however genuine, not equate to love. Loki knows this, certainly, has always accepted it as truth, and he would readily scoff in the face of anyone who had the gall to accuse him of letting his attentions stray further afield than they ever should.

And yet...perhaps, if he were forced into honesty, Loki would say he's spent far too long dreading the moments Tony would leave him again once their time together has come to an end. Perhaps he would admit that the idea of Tony taking other clients outside of himself sits ill inside of him despite knowing he has no right to feeling as such.

Perhaps, if he had to be honest, he would be forced to admit that he asks for Tony's company in longer and longer spans because it's easier, safer, less foolish than trying to keep Tony as his own with a more exclusive arrangement when what he should be placing distance between them instead.

Asgard is readying itself for the year's winter solstice celebrations, the entire capitol gleaming in golds and silvers under the iridescent frost of the gentle snow drift, lavishly decorated to welcome their intended guests from across the realms. It's no surprise that Loki would want Tony at his side for it, certainly not when the celebration in question will last no less than the better part of two weeks, but--

Perhaps it's greedy to call upon him for more than that, but Loki has never denied being anything but.

They're some time out from the celebrations proper, a couple weeks from the first guests even arriving, and Loki lets the fiction stand that he would have Tony so much sooner only so that he could gift him a wardrobe of garments specifically for the occasion, tailored for no one but himself, constructed in whatever colors and fabrics and furs of his choosing. Indulgences, and ones that Loki is more than happy to give him, tokens of his affection built of clothing and jewelry and rare books, of a set of rooms near to Loki's own where Tony can take his privacy when he chooses to, of the explicit order given that whatever Tony may require while a guest of the prince's be given without hassle to him.

And if that comes with the occasional annoyance of ignoring knowing looks or snide comments directed his way, so be it.

"My father has made a few less than subtle comments regarding this year's solstice." He says in way of greeting when he comes to find Tony, fresh from a meeting with the king in question and his lips already curved with the laughter flickering in his eyes. "Somehow he's gotten it in his head that some expected to be in attendance have a bad habit of not being on their very best behavior. I can't imagine who he means."

[On the surface, when they'd brought her in, the job description had been simple enough. Precious cargo needing a handler, guard at all costs, people will try to get their hands on it, blah blah blah. It hadn't really mattered that much to her, at that point. It was a job and it paid well, and rich people have all sorts of eccentricities when it comes to their possessions and making sure none of the riffraff gets their filthy hands on it. She'd been figuring that was all they were really asking her to do — be a reliable person for making sure nobody tried to mess with their...vase, or historical artifact, or giant stack of gold, or sacred cow, for all she knew. It wasn't her job to ask questions. It was just her job to put a sharp edge between the thing and anybody who might think about getting too close to it.

But then they'd showed her what it is she's supposed to be guarding, and wouldn't you know it, that's...not a cow. That's definitely not a cow.

Turns out, it's a boy. The heir to the empire, they say, not by blood like the Lucian kings, but by design. They made him, after countless tests and trials and failed experiments; the poor kid doesn't even know how many brothers and sisters he'd once had before him, all of whom had been made and tested and scrapped when they didn't measure up to specifications.

But this one, they think they got right. That's what they say, at least. That's why they've been keeping him under wraps, behind walls, the best-kept secret of the Empire. They don't let him do anything, go anywhere. Nothing that might risk him or ruin him. She half-wonders if the kid's ever seen the sky, with the way they've kept him cooped up in his pretty box all his life.

Apparently now that's about to change, though. Whatever it is they wanted him for, they're getting ready to make it a reality. And she's got her guesses about what that's going to be, too, with a sweet face like that, and those exotic Nif looks. He's designed to be a bargaining chip, something tempting for somebody with some power among the Lucians. He's going to open a door to get them something they want.

(Her guess? He'll get them something they want, all right. They'll hand him off to some high-up guy in the kingdom and the minute they're alone, it'll be a regicide. That's what she'd do, at least. All this talk of alliances and peace treaties is bullshit.)

But for now? She's the kid's babysitter, and he's still never been outside this fortress's walls. He still looks at her a little sideways when she drops in, like he's never been allowed to see a female of the species before. He fumbles over his words, sometimes, because nobody ever taught him what to say. Kinda makes her wonder if that's the real reason why she's here, to get his social interaction up to scratch before they send him out into the big wide world.

Maybe that's how it is. But more and more, she's finding herself growing fond of the kid — and starting to wonder if maybe the people she's been hired by are the people he really needs the guarding from, to begin with.]

[ For all intents and purposes, this was essentially imprisonment. Sinbad wasn't fool enough to convince himself it was anything less. He'd have something resembling freedom, sure, but his kingdom would be inextricably tied to the Kou Empire now--especially if his new wife-to-be bore him heirs.

Which of the Ren princesses was he promised to, again? He honestly couldn't remember. Jafar was being kept somewhere else in the palace, surely to prevent them from scheming together to find a way out of this. He knew all the details by heart, like always.

At least, judging by his own lodgings, he was probably being kept comfortable. Sinbad's designated quarters were nothing short of palatial; a small collection of rooms, a massive bed, windows opening into the internal courtyard.

He sighed, feeling for his absent ring and bracelet unconsciously for the hundreth time. Without his metal vessels, there was no clean way out of here. The wedding would be his best opportunity, even though it meant putting innocents in the line of fire.

Whatever happened, it would be ugly. ]
