There’s no real push to your actions; you do them as if they were second nature. Perhaps, initially, you were assigned this role, as protector and guardian of this person. Maybe you took it on because there was no one else. A natural guardian or not, good or evil, you caught a shining to them and felt…something. Something hard to explain, but you want to keep them safe and happy - or at the very least, content. No one is as dedicated to them as you. You want them to reach their goals; to help them achieve them, you'll do what you must, even if it means being their gofer or their right hand.

But most of all, you don't want them to end up like you. They're worth more than that.

Yet somehow, along the line, you became more to them, more than just their protector. You protect them anew and you've found a different way to make them happy. It's selfish, too, because you love them in your way and you want them more than anything. You may feel guilty, of course. They don't, though, and that's what matters.

Remember, you don't have to be so rigid. A traditionally weak character can "protect" a traditionally strong one in emotional ways.

Debt Owed ✖ Kindness or favor has to be repaid, even if it's an investment in someone else.
Atonement ✖ Whether or not you particularly cared for the person who's gone is irrelevant. You just need to make up for past sins.
No Good ✖ You're taking care of the one left behind, but not out of good intentions. There may be ulterior motives here - no, there are definitely ulterior motives here. Or maybe this is the one good thing you've done in your life.
Guilt ✖ It's your fault that you're here and their significant other isn't. It's a paltry repayment.
Bearer of Bad News ✖ You can't blame them for wanting to shoot the messenger. You are telling them their lover is dead.
Related ✖ In days past, the living partner would be cared for by their dead partner's family. As a sibling or cousin of the deceased, you want to continue that tradition and take care of "family."
Wo/man Up ✖ Actually, their lover isn't dead, they're just dead to you, unable or unwilling to take care of business. You're stepping up.
Friends ✖ You were all friends before, so it's only natural for you to want to look out for them now.

[Tired, hungry, and sore, Martha's really beginning to wonder if there's a target painted on her somewhere. Because here she is again, kidnapped and tied to a chair. Bait? Held for safe keeping? The men patrolling around her aren't telling her a thing. She tries pulling at the ropes again but they don't budge now anymore than they did an hour ago. Or the hour before that. She takes in a deep breath and tries to contain her fear, resigned to wait. Someone will come.]

[There are certain people Bruce feels personally responsible for. The mother of the man he nearly killed, the man he was responsible for bringing back, the woman who's been through so much already and shines with essential goodness, the woman who shares his own mother's name..... she's in his top ten.

He hates this.

Clark's not even on the planet at the moment. Bruce has to do it, he has to help her.

He tosses a smoke bomb in through the open window. It's debilitating, but not permanently dangerous. If Martha's one of the people on his infrared batscope, then it might make her sneeze and cough a little, but the main impediment is purely to sight.]

[The bomb lands a few meters from where she's sitting. Her eyes fly wide and she gasps in surprise just as the smoke starts billowing out of the canister, filling the space around her quickly. She instinctively tries to cover her mouth and nose but only succeeds at further scratching up her wrists. Meanwhile, the armed men in the room are going nuts, yelling and running in their disorientation. Several shots are fired blindly, idiots hoping to get lucky.

Martha forces her eyes closed against the sudden burning sensation, tears forming behind her eyelids. Then she starts coughing in earnest.]

[Seriously, he can't just speed over to Gotham just because Diana says so. But Diana, indeed, said so and he really only knows one person in Gotham. And if Barry played his cards right, he might be able to sneak around the Bat Cave again. So he's at Bruce's front door, trying to figure out what the threat was that Diana was talking about that needed him to come to Bruce.]

Bruce opens the door, a wild look on his face. Then he ducks and slams it shut again. The point of something thuds in the door at about Barry's face height, just visible to Barry on his side of the door, going thwoingoingoingoingoing.

[either/or! he's the devil, so he has supernatural abilities and immortality going for him but, being the devil, his idea of protection might not be entirely to your taste... but, that said, if anybody needs protection, especially from their own demons ~~not you, maze~~, lucifer's definitely your guy.]

This wasn't the first time Raas had made it topside, centuries of playing an omen of death for human superstition and the occasional summonings by fellow demons wanting an extra hand or by curious humans who stumbled upon old spell books written in old Latin, gave them the opportunity to see the world change over the years.

They were content with their job, their purpose, guarding hell and its occupants for all eternity. It was what they were created to do... that was until Lucifer decided to leave. Then they became like a restless pet whose owner was gone for months on end, unsure of when they'd return if they ever would. Word traveled around that Lucifer had left to Los Angeles with Maze in tow, so at least, they had a place to start looking. The possibility of being punished for leaving their guard post lingered in the back of their mind. But this... this was worth it. They'd be protecting someone far more deserving than Hell's poor souls.

No one paid much mind in the middle of downtown at this late night hour to a black borzoi with unnaturally bright eyes and an intricate gold collar following a scent that was all too familiar. When they turned the street corner, walking briskly past a long entry line into a nightclub called Lux, did the scent grow stronger the closer they got to the door. It was easy to slip through the door when the bouncer wasn't looking, shifting into a form that best suited the occasion was a little difficult to decide on, both were eye-grabbing in their own way.

They could always move closer in their female form, especially in this setting, knowing they could change into the other just as easily if they needed to. Shifting was painless, the materialization of a suitable outfit was just the same as they moved further into the club in a black backless cocktail dress, the gold collar changing into one that was smaller as they leaned up against the railing as they scanned the scene for Lucifer.
