Hades & Persephone.

Persephone was gathering flowers with the Oceanids along with Artemis and Athena—the Homeric Hymn says—in a field when Hades came to abduct her, bursting through a cleft in the earth. Demeter, when she found her daughter had disappeared, searched for her all over the earth with torches. In most versions she forbids the earth to produce, or she neglects the earth and in the depth of her despair she causes nothing to grow. Helios, the sun, who sees everything, eventually told Demeter what had happened and at length she discovered the place of her abode. Finally, Zeus, pressed by the cries of the hungry people and by the other deities who also heard their anguish, forced Hades to return Persephone. Hades indeed complied with the request, but first he tricked her, giving her some pomegranate seeds to eat. Persephone was released by Hermes, who had been sent to retrieve her, but because she had tasted food in the underworld, she was obliged to spend a third of each year (the winter months) there, and the remaining part of the year with the gods above. but even that hardest of hearts unhardened suddenly when he saw her there: persephone in her mother’s garden, sun on her shoulders, wind in her hair, the smell of flowers she held in her hand and the pollen that fell from her fingertips. and suddenly, hades was only a man with a taste of nectar upon his lips To live your life in darkness is no easy task. Evil may be just a point of view - one you may not ascribe to yourself - but a black heart or a ruthless mind is hardly quieted. While you don't regret what you've done, at least not outwardly, you do wonder if there isn't something more. Grey morality has discolored your world. That is, until you see them. They are beautiful, pure, good: everything that you are not. You should be annoyed or at least ambivalent to their presence; after all, they serve you no purpose, promise you no gain. But oddly enough, you are drawn to them, and not even in hopes to destroy or corrupt. No, you want to have them, to keep them with you. What to do with this newfound feeling? Act on it, of course. You've never let anything stop you before. What you don't realize (or perhaps do, you just don't exactly care) is that the object of your...affection may not be too keen on being taken what they see as prisoner. Yet you only have their best interests at heart! Still, you do care for them, in your own fashion, more than almost anyone else, so surely a deal can be struck... You just couldn't bear to lose them. This meme, obviously, is inspired by the myth of Hades and Persephone. Feel free to be as literal or as loose with your interpretations as you'd like. Comment with your character, canon, preferences, and what role you'd like your character to play. Reply to others. Play anything and any scenario that fits within the theme.

The photograph comes tucked inside that first letter he receives from Lydia, a tri-folded paper that fits snug inside its envelope. Hannibal unfolds it - it's off-white and thick, heathered with darker shades. The ink is thick and carefully applied and, Hannibal thinks, marked in with a fountain pen. It's been smeared in a few places by an errant hand resting on the paper, soft markings of the very human teenager who composed it. It's got the carefully imperfect signs of someone enjoying a new exercise in self-expression.

Hannibal feels scathing about it at first as he looks at black smudgings and the signs of her re-folding the pages when they didn't align perfectly on the first try. As he reads that first letter though, there's something decidedly intriguing about her need to be at once cutting and careless. Being a disaffected teen himself, perhaps there's an instinctual recognition in Lydia.

Lydia. It's a new name to Hannibal's ears when they had exchanged addresses at the middle of that first meeting. The internet informs Hannibal that it's an early example of a place name, and Greek; that the inhabitants of Lydia had invented coins and been known for their wealth and musical talent. He wonders if Lydia and her camera are hiding any additional career prospects as a musician or a banker.

When he asks her as much in their first letter correspondence, he's told absolutely not, that she finds the idea of being an accountant incredibly boring. But she digs at the historical implication, comes back with her own questions about elephants and Carthage for 'Hannibal' to answer.

He smiles at the returned barb, even as he details the many ways in which he would conduct a military expedition with a slight variance on the use of exotic animals.

The softening turns into a consuming surface, like lava or a puddle of acid rain, when Lydia first mentions her friends. Adult friends, and while Hannibal's mind supplies plenty of inappropriate questions - at least one of which he does in fact ask - he certainly wasn't expecting the long ensuing tug-of-war that any answers require.

Ghosts, she eventually says, and Hannibal thinks she is being metaphorical. Then he thinks she is intentionally trying to play him for a fool. Seven letters in and Hannibal thinks perhaps she has teenage psychosis, some adolescent schizophrenia. He also thinks he needs to see this for himself.

It's for research purposes and nothing more that they arrange that second visit, the first purposeful one between them. Hannibal has never actually traveled to America before, or to anywhere that required a plane ride, despite having been to multiple countries.

At least he has some idea of who he's looking for, at the airport gates.

What a ghastly world this was, full of armies outfitted in Veretian style, tightly garbed and armed to the teeth with weapons that could lay a man out, twitching, for hours. Damen had no desire to test them out again. His first venture was, indeed, the only reason he strides up so boldly to the slight robed figure in black, flanked by fully armored figures. He's not going to charge full-force again, not bodily. But his mouth knows no such limits.

"Nice mask, sweetheart. Mummers dance, coming up?" The bronzed man gains another step, scantly clad in leather armor over his torso and hips, leaving his arms and legs bare and overflowing with muscle. If Kylo Ren has an eight-pack (doubtful) under that flowing black robe, Damen has kegs at his disposal. He never skips leg or abs day.

"Throw away those magical weapons and come fight me with a sword, and we'll see who's the better man." He feels for his own weapon, which has of course been long since taken from his belt, but those huge hands could deal some damage of their own nonetheless...
