1. BREAK DOWN

Oh, snap, your car decided to break down out in the middle of nowhere. WHAT DO? Is that Leatherface? Will this be "Children of the Corn"?

2. TRUCK STOP

You've stopped at a gas station. They're out of gas, snacks and the bathrooms are out of order. Wat do. (Zombie attack optional.)

3. HITCHHIKERS?

Is this even a good idea? Why is their backpack leaking suspicious substances? Go wild.

4. WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST HIT?

Dude, I hear deer mess up cars... or I think that was a deer.

5. DON'T MAKE ME TURN THIS CAR AROUND!

Alas, you're the parent or the disgruntled friend who has had it up to here with all the fighting in the back.

6. OMG, I WANT TO TAKE A PICTURE OF THIS LANDMARK!

[The circumstances that led to this road trip, and, more specifically, the moment that Lisa Lisa and her student found themselves in were…well, long and convoluted. They made perfect sense in context. It had (like all bad ideas had a tendency to do) seemed like a good idea at the time.

And it wasn’t like the first part of this road trip had been entirely unpleasant, even if Caesar was starting to chaff because he was on his best behavior the entire time, or as close to it as he could be. He told himself it was fine. After all, this was his teacher and his mentor and he respected her like she was his own mother and he was a Zeppeli and thus being on his best behavior every single second was far from a sacrifice, no, if anything it was an honor, a grave honor, an important honor…but he still kind of wanted to be free.

"Africa is not Europe in 1937." Bucky has said this twice now. But he's making a point. Since they lost the map four hours ago, he'd swear that they've passed the same group of trees at least twice, if not three times.

He's sitting in the passenger seat, since it's impossible to drive stick with only one arm. But he's not above needling his best friend. The man is a super soldier, sure. Can read a map at a glance, but there is no map, landmarks are few and far between, and the closest thing to a gas station out here is the watering hole they passed a few miles back, but that had a rather large pride of lions lounging around it.

This sucks. Royally, properly sucks.

Vrenille's been in some pretty rough spots before. He's had to stretch his creativity to survive. But he doesn't think he's ever been in a spot quite like this: accidentally stuck in some foreign world in the middle of what seems to be nothing but endless arteries of road traversed by strange metal vehicles with white and red lights on them.

Off the sides of roads there's nothing but inky darkness as far as the eye can see and a cold wind blowing across what seems like miles of barren emptiness. When he finally burns enough shoe leather to get himself to this "truck stop" he's ready to hail it an outpost of civilization--a little town, maybe. Only he quickly learns that's not what it is at all.

If he wants a town, a very gruff waitress tells him while she taps her foot expecting him to actually order something instead of just wasting her time, he's got a good fifty or sixty miles to go. And when she says it, suddenly it makes sense to him why people in this place zip around in their little brightly polished personal tanks: if he wants to get to a town, he's going to need a ride.

He's never hitchhiked before, and it doesn't occur to him that it's usually done by standing out by the roadside with your thumb in the air. (Even if someone told him he'd probably still think that was pretty ineffective. Seriously, you ought to be able to think up a better use for a thumb than that!)

No, what he needs is to strike up some bargain in here. Find a guy who'll want something he can give or do in exchange. There's some risk to it though, trying to find the right sort of mark in a place this foreign, and it's damn late at night--there aren't a lot of people around to begin with, not a lot of options.

The best he can do is to take his time, watch the comings and goings, try and get a feel for the usual patterns--how long people spend in the convenience store, what they most often buy, that sort of thing. And slowly he starts to come up with an idea. It's like 80% formed when the tall, lanky, ginger-haired guy with the eye patch walks in.

Vrenille watches him find a table in the diner area beneath the over-bright florescent lights--in the smoking section, notably. Watches him order, then shake the last cigarette out of his pack and crumple the empty box. Then he slips back into the convenience store and steals a pack with the same picture on the label. It's not his favorite thing to do, but it's a small crime that's covered by a small bit of mesmer spellcraft to make sure he doesn't get caught.

After that he just waits for his moment--hands patting down pockets seems like a good opportunity--slips into the next booth over at an angle easily in view, takes out a cigarette, and pats his own pockets, seeming to come up empty.

"Hey man," he cocks his head, looking over into the one-eyed face, "do you have a light?"
