The snow had been fun at first. She'd never seen it before, except on TV and in movies. It's not like California got snow very often.

But now? Now it's just cold, and wet, and so is she. Her teeth are chattering as she walks through the streets of Hawkins, jacket not nearly warm enough and she has no gloves because -- well, she just isn't prepared for winter, in general. It's night time, so in addition to the lightly falling snow and the piles of it she's trudging through, the temperature has dropped, and the wind has kicked up.

It takes her a half hour to make it to Lucas's house. She hesitates at the door, not sure his parents will be thrilled with her unanticipated presence at this time of night, but she needed to get out of the house and away from Neil and Billy for awhile.
