SNOWPOCALYPSE: THE ICEJAR

When the New Ice Age hit many government-based experiments went haywire. The worst of these was known as the Vortexia, deep under New York, a weather mutation device that forced down polar vortexes and descended the world into a state ten times worse than its natural progression, but it also did something else ... Of course it did. Time and space warped around the biggest vortex in NY opening the Gateway and people from different worlds still regularly fall through it today, years after the First Freeze. You can't get out, you can't go home. Some people and animals were altered, as you will see. You're all stuck in the frosty Hell on Earth, renamed Vortexia, forever. There is no system of government and no one will protect you except the allies you make yourself. The people working at the Gateway trying to figure out what's going on? Engineers, astronauts, college students. Normal. As if the mutations of humans and animals alike isn't enough to deal with, there are also random monsters that show up. The Gateway doesn't discriminate what comes through ... RULES • Leave a comment with your character's name and fandom. • RNG for a number between 1-10 to get your prompts and settings. | SCENARIOS i WHERE: 001 THE GATEWAY BUNKER | Having passed out during arrival those in what is now known as the Bunker, deep under NY, have put you up in a temporary bed for the night. There is a pack of clothes and a written note with a map next to your cot, indicating you should get dressed and take the stairs above-ground to the first building in Vortexia you will lay eyes on, along with all the other newbies. You've been pulled through time and space but at least there's always free meal at the cafeteria, right? Say Hi! 002 TREKKING ABOUT | Snow-shoes on, hood up, safety gear in place. Explore the world around you! But don't stay out too long in case something nasty catches your scent ... or the other people around here decide to steal your stuff. 003 THE LIBRARY | Heavily fortified for a common building, like all the buildings in Vortexia most of it lies underground. Sometimes books and gadgets fall through the Gateway and all of them are stored here. Want to know what happened, why you were pulled here, and all about how Vortexia got its name? Just ask the friendly librarians to point you in the right direction. 004 THE HOUSING | Many of the old skyscrapers have apartment buildings that have been converted into new homes for new arrivals. There is no real system to who lives where; claim one and get to know your neighbors. Or if you've been here a while, invited someone over. 005 GARDENIA | Somewhat hopefully named, these plexiglass greenhouse structures dominate the very top of the skyline on the roof of a building where they have been built to try and give a few seeds some warm sunlight. Hardly anything grows, just a few hardy little examples. Still, it's a good place to meet the more pleasant crowd of Vortexia and there is a lounge indoors to chat over a hot drink. 006 THE KITCHENS | A building devoted solely to carving up the kills of the day and sharing them out (relatively) equally when you come calling. A meat market affectionately called The Kitchens, this is the hub of Vortexian society. Not all the produce here is animal however ... maybe you'd like to try some freshly slain monster today? 007 THE PUB | Next to the Kitchens an old restaurant has been transformed into the cozy pub "OLD WILLY" where you can trade almost anything for a hot meal. A fireplace always blazes here and it is the only place you can find a wide selection of alcohol. There are shotguns behind the bar to deal with both polar bears on the streets at night (and anything else attracted by the noise) along with rowdy customers. 008 THE FORESTS | Someone tried to dig up Central Park a long time ago. The wild things moved in to claim the frosty woods, but it remains a good place to hunt if you are prepared to fight for your life. 009 THE TEMPLE OF VORTEXIA | Still terrified? Upset? Sanctuary is given to all who cross the temple's doors and all religions are welcome to pray in their own fashion; the gods never seem to pay attention, anyway. Will you find a picture/letter from a loved one pinned on the Wall of the Missing? After all, in Vortexia sometimes people just disappear. 010 WILD CARD | Create your own setting! ii WHAT: 001 HUNTING | Killing what you can, bringing its carcass back to the Kitchens and getting the choice cut for yourself. 002 WORKING | Not everyone wants to go around slaying beasts. Whether working in Gardenia or helping out in the Kitchens, Old Willy or the Library, you're doing your bit. 003 PATROLLING | Brave souls who walk the streets after nightfall. The most dangerous job of all, but someone has to do it. 004 INJURED | It was bound to happen sooner or later. 005 HOMESICK | You miss your world, the one that didn't suck. Only upset or is everything finally breaking you down? 006 SCAVENGING | Relatively safe within Vortexian city limits. We say relatively ... who knows what's lurking out there waiting to eat you while you find new fuel to burn or electronics to collect for the techhie guys in the Bunker to tinker with. 007 TINKERING | The Gateway and the Bunker are both run by normal people. There is no government left standing, no secret organization. If you're smart enough to dig into the research piled up here and help, go for it. 008 CELEBRATING | Either just the two of you or an impromptu party somewhere else like the pub. 009 FALLING | No, not down a glacier (for once!). You're in love with the other person. 010 WILD CARD | Do whatever you want! iii DANGERS: 001 THE BRITTLE | Snow-zombies. The Vortexia royally fucked up on a level no one likes to talk about. Anyone who freezes to death immediately comes back as one of these. They are fast, nasty and the cold doesn't bother them at all, rising from their snowy graves at night when the sun doesn't hurt their fragile eyes. 002 POLAR BEARS | Mostly roaming the tundra at night, they stick to the forests and outskirts of the city of Vortexia. Huge and always hungry. 003 MONSTERS | The Gateway occasionally brings through some real shit from all those different worlds. When it does, the result is cast out on the tundra to either die or ... spawn. 004 BIRDS | Like everything else, these were warped to twice their usual size. What makes them especially dangerous is their advanced level of thinking, more like wolves with a pack mentality. Dangerous as Hell when spotted overhead in a huge flock. 005 WOLVES | The only animal that ranks lower than a polar bear in ferocity, and almost as big. Don't walk into their territory, they never give up a chase unless slain. 006 ICE STORMS | You might have once scoffed at the thought of a snowstorm, but the ones in Vortexia instantly freeze the air itself and you along with it if you're not indoors by the time it really gets started. 007 YETI | While the undead walk at night, the living yeti claim the day. These fluffy white giants have fangs, claws, and stand twelve-feet high, preferring to live in quiet areas away from humans. Some say that when the Vortexia experiment went wrong, a handful of New Yorkers didn't die. They were ... changed. And they bred. 008 SEA MONSTERS | If you drive out into the tundra to go fishing, beware. Mutations weren't only kept to the shore. 009 DRAGONS | A mated pair once fell through the Gateway and flew off into the mountains. Very rarely, they launch an attack on the city of Vortexia.
