APPRENTICE-SHIPPING

From the moment we begin our lives, we're learning. It's imperative to surviving, to growing - don't walk in the shadows, it's dangerous, don't touch the fire, you'll be hurt. These days, most continue to hone this natural instinct with formal schooling, but that's certainly not the end all, be all of knowledge. If you go to school or not, if you have the opportunity or otherwise, you won't stop sharpening your mind after those formative years. That's just not the way our incredible brains work.

You, specifically, have actually decided to something equally incredible: you want to really dedicate yourself to learning a skill, and what better way than an apprenticeship? Formal or informal, you're under someone's tutelage, absorbing everything they can teach, growing closer to them in the process...

...unfortunately, though, you've gained a little something extra with that bite from the fruit of knowledge. You've fallen for your mentor.

[ Bucky hefts the gun in his flesh hand and looks over at his new apprentice. ]

Steve never taught you?

[ He can sort of believe that. Though why Steve hadn't pulled out the 'everyone knows everyone's job' bit, he didn't know. Still, he is a better shot than Steve. Even with a hand gun. He twirls the handgun around and hands it to Wanda, butt first. The safety is on, but it won't stay that way the entire afternoon.

Bucky has deep respect for the young lady that had dropped cars on Tony Stark. But still, she should know how to handle herself, without her powers. Just in case. ]

[Around s2, definitely the mentee at this point and picky af about her mentor. Sometimes playing in the big crime leagues is worth it.]

[ There's a lot of situations that make Scott uncomfortable. That's to be expected, given his life. Of course, none of them involve being locked in torture devices or thrown off of bridges or chained up in front of incoming trains.

He's fine with that. Really.

But then Barda catches the girl attempting to steal her mega-rod, there's a Discussion (with a capital letter, of course, he can't get out of those often enough) and somehow, he ends up with a new apprentice. Trainee. Someone with clear potential that he has prevented from becoming a stain on the carpet roughly in the shape of his wife's boot.

...Oberon and Barda had gone off to the store and left the two of them to, uh... well, to get to know one another. ]

So. We're new to Gotham. Does this happen a lot?

'This' being enforced apprenticeship, or theft?

[She starts out indignant, deeply so, but then shrugs. If she's honest, there's probably plenty of both in this town. Gotham's a real gem.]

So they call you Mister Miracle, right? That wasn't just a whole performance gig?

More the theft.

[ He'd heard the reputation that Gotham had, but he'd thought it was something of an exaggeration. After all, he'd lived in the pits, in the depths of Apokolips. It couldn't be that bad, right?

And it wasn't. But still. ]

The apprenticeship was my idea, after all. But yes, Mister Miracle. That's the name. The stage name, anyway.

Out of the costume, I usually just go by Scott.

You should come up with a better name. [She makes a very judgmental face. 'Mister Miracle' sounds really corny.]

Theft is how I put dinner on the table, anyway, so...yeah. And your wife's whatever-stick would have paid for a really good dinner.

I inherited this name from a good friend.

[ He'd known the man for a very short span, especially for a New God like himself, but it didn't matter. Thaddeus had made an impression. ]

And I wouldn't let Oberon hear you talking like that when he gets back. He's a touch defensive of the title.

[ He'd been with Thaddeus before he'd been with Scott, after all. ]

As for theft, it's not as if I can't sympathize. But we'll give you a good dinner and by the time I'm done with you, you'll never get stuck in one of my deathtraps again. Really, it could be much worse.

[ He knows. He lived 'much worse'. And he wouldn't wish it on anyone. He's also more than a little awkward about the fact that he's dealing with... well, a kid. His only example of child rearing was not one to be emulated, no matter what Granny said. ]

Whatever. As long as your wife isn't going to pummel me over it. [Because of all the adults in this situation, Barda is definitely the one she's wary of. Lady is a lot faster than she has any right to be, in Selina's not remotely humble opinion.

The promise of dinner is met coolly: she hasn't had to rely on the kindness of strangers in a long time, and generally distrusts it instead. But the rest, well. There might be a bit of a gleam growing in her eye.]

And how long's that gonna take to learn, exactly?

[ Because Selina has very good instincts. Oberon (who she hasn't met yet anyway) is mostly a pushover and Scott's a dedicated pacifist who'll do anything he can to avoid a confrontation. Barda is definitely the one to worry about in this situation. ]

Never try to take a Fury's weapon. It's good life advice.

Even when they're trying to kill you. Your best bet is to run away.

[ He might have something of a bias, considering. ]

And that depends: do you just want to get out of my deathtraps, or out of any deathtraps?

Yeah, coulda used that advice earlier. Along with an explanation of what the hell a Fury is?

[Seriously, though, she is still shady on this alien crap.

She considers him for a moment, then just makes a face that says, quite succinctly: duh.]

[ Which he says like he's discussing the 49ers or the Gotham Knights. Except not so much... ]

Barda was their leader at one point, and she's always been the best of them. Nowadays, she's less loyal to Darkseid, as you might guess since we're here.

[ But he nods firmly. ]

And you definitely shouldn't. After all, you never know what you'll have to find your way out of.

Uh-huh....

[She mostly just gives him a blank look and a nod. Sure - why isn't there some alien out there calling himself Dark Side? Might as well hand out pins saying 'join me, I'm Actually Evil.' Is subtlety just not a thing in space?]

Yeah, like getting caught by a whatever-your-wife-is. [She remembers, she just prefers to pretend like she doesn't care.]
