Letter Types

Maybe you were just cleaning up, maybe you were snooping on purpose when you found the letter tucked away where they obviously thought you would never find it. It has your name written right on it, plain and clear.

Do you read it? It's so hard to resist...

And if you do, do you confront them about it or try your best to ignore it?

1. hate ∞ the letter details what you've done to bother the person who wrote it. It lists all the problems they have with you and all the wrongs you've done to them.
2. break ∞ secretly, they've wanted to break up with you for awhile now.
3. love ∞ they are hopelessly, helplessly in love with you.
4. depression ∞ they're very depressed or desperate and spill out every reason why.
5. confession ∞ they've done something wrong and detail it in this letter. Was it to you or somebody else?
6. sexy ∞ not quite romantic, they're confessing all the dirty things they would like to do with you.
7. leaving ∞ they were offered a job or something too enticing to pass up and they're planning on leaving you soon.

"Mycroft,

I apologize for leaving like I did and I understand that it was uncalled for that evening was a mistake on both our parts, but I have something that I need to tell you. I found out just recently that I'm pregnant. The doctor says everything is fine with them and myself. I know you don't care much for children, but for as long as we worked together and were friends... you deserve to know. If you'd liked to be involved I'd wish nothing more.

Anthea James."

Mycroft read the letter once, then again, then a third time just to make sure.

He collapsed into his chair, the room spinning slightly on its axis.

They had been careful, used protection. How could this have happened? Well, of course he knew how it happened, but she couldn't have been able to get pregnant.

Yet, here she was. It was in black and white.

So... what was he going to do?

With a shaky hand, he poured himself a scotch.

And then another.

It took hours for him to finally press the reply button on the email that she had sent him.

I would like to visit a personal physician, where you can get a full examination, blood culture, and physical workup.

Please text me with the soonest time that you would be available.

He had to know for sure with his own eyes and ears, from his doctor. Maybe she had just used an over the counter test and it was wrong.

He could hope.

Anthea was truly surprised he replied. She hadn't expected him to. She noted his request and wondered if he'd been so shocked she missed where her doctor said she was fine.The twins were fine and right on target. She would of course oblige the man. She replied.

"I'm available tomorrow actually. AJ"

*Them*.

She had said... them.

He thought back to that day. It had been 11 weeks ago, when their... tryst happened. It was just one night, though they had made love several times before they fell asleep in each other's arms.

When he woke, she had been gone.

Shortly after that, she had resigned from her job as his PA.

She must have just found out it was twins, he thought to himself. The soonest a doctor could diagnose twins was at 10 weeks, so she had to have known for less than a week, though surely she had known she was pregnant before that, hadn't she?

There were so many more questions, than answers.

He texted her the address and time- 10:00 AM.

She had an idea that pregnancy was the cause of her feeling ill several weeks prior to her appointment. She'd been incredibly tired and often found herself on the floor in front of her toilet. She saw the message and set her phone aside. She had always cared for Mycroft more than he did for her and she was always okay with it. Once the whole event happened it was too hard to separate her emotions from work.

Anthea was quite thin and if one observed close enough they could very much see she was showing.

It took every single bit of Mycroft's willpower to not drink himself into oblivion that night.

He had a couple more glasses of scotch, just enough to take the edge off.

What was he going to do? He barely tolerated most humans. Anthea had always been an exception to that rule. She was smart and, lets face it, she was sensual, She had a beautiful body. Even the Iceman had to admit that.

If he barely tolerated humans, how would he do with a baby? Much less two? He had only spent a minimal amount of time with Doctor Watson's child. She was.. tolerable for the most part, until she stared to cry. Then he made his excuse to leave.

There was no getting out of this.

Mycroft tossed and turned, his dreams were haunted by the trappings of parenthood.. crying, nappies, no sleep, feeding, all of the things that he had no idea about.

When his alarm went off, he had only gotten a few hours of sleep at best.

Anthea woke and as usual she dressed still incredibly put together, but in just a more casual manner than she had when working in Mycroft's office. She wore thicker leggings and a long sweater. She'd left the heals for a flat shoe. For once the woman was nervous in seeing the man. She still had no clue what his reaction was. At the designated time, or early for her, she was waiting. She recognized the place briefly from work.

He took the hottest shower that he could, and dressed like he was going to work, in a bespoked suit, tie, pocket watch, the whole thing. It was his armor, and he was going to need it today.

This time, he drove himself, he didn't want others to know about this yet.

When he walked up to the clinic, he saw her waiting for him outside.

"Good morning." He offered, pleasantly.

She gave him a gentle smile as she always did when he came into work in the mornings. "Good morning, sir." She replied. She was incredibly nervous but did her best not to show it. She wasn't sure what she was supposed to say to him, at least in this situation. So she opted for nothing.

"You do not work for my any more. You don't have to call me sir. Mycroft is fine."

He stepped forward and opened the door, not really wanting to continue this conversation right now.

"After you, please." He swept his hand forward, towards the office.

She led the way, somehow remembering where things were, and by simply following the signs. She was sure his brain was moving quickly on deductions. He seemed almost angry but decided not to think to deeply about it.

He told the receptionist that they were here, and they were asked to sit.

Thankfully, because this was a government run office for the government, only one group of people came at a time, so they were there by themselves.

It wasn't a long wait before a nurse called them back. Mycroft had been deep in his own mind palace, totally silent while waiting.

He got up and followed Anthea inside.

Anthea let out a breath trying to relieve some nerves. The tension not exactly enjoyable. She followed the nurse, sensing Mycroft's presence behind her. She didn't wait for directions and sat on the bed.

Once again, Mycroft was silent as they waited for the doctor to come in after the nurse left the room.

He looked Anthea over. It was surprising that at 11 weeks she was starting to show, but it wasn't overly concerning or anything. He had done some research, some women with twins showed as early as 8 weeks, some as late as 16 or 18.

But as she was of slight stature, he was not that surprised that there was only the slightest little hitch in her jumper. The jumper was thick enough that anyone that didn't know her wouldn't notice.

But of course he did.

She glanced over at him from examining the items on the counter. "How have things been?" She asked. Somehow she felt guilty for quitting, and part of her wanted to come back, but she'd never admit it.

She started feeling a bit nauseous, for once she wasn't certain if it was nerves or the pregnancy symptoms getting to her.

"I have a new PA, but he is rather dull and vacuous, sadly." He replied out of habit, because he knew that it was what you were supposed to do, not because he really wanted to have this conversation, or actually be here.

As soon as he saw her getting a bit ashen, though, he stopped talking and grabbed a small waste bin nearby, holding it in front of her.

"It's perfectly normal to feel nauseous, especially with twins." he said. He had indeed done quite a bit of reading.

She nodded. "I know." She leaned forward slightly. "I'm fine really." She assured him.

She was quiet again. "I really didn't expect you to reply." She admitted to him. It was best to be honest. They'd always been that way with one another. No need to start anything else now.

He leaves the bin in front of her, in case she needs it, then settles back in to his own chair across from her.

It takes him a moment to decide what to say. He wasn't even sure why he had responded either.

"I could say that it was out of a sense of propriety." He started. "And that wouldn't be a lie." He paused again.

"But.. I cannot see you go through this alone. The world is woefully unfair to begin with. I could never be that cruel to someone I have always admired."
