[ you learn how to handle dreams early as a mage — you have to, when the alternatives end one of two ways. identify threats, reject unwelcome intrusions. recognize that the only inmutable thing is yourself, and stay true. the fade is vast and malleable, and will is both shield and architect.

blight dreams... do not function in a way that amell understands, as a mage. she no longer remembers what dreams were like before the fade opened itself to her, but from descriptions by others she thinks maybe they're like how it feels to connect with the darkspawn mind: unable to change anything, to alter her path, to even recognize the different reality in the first place. only, sometimes, a filmy sense of something wrong, too weak to jar her awake but too present to ignore, until she wrenches back into the physical world with sweat soaking her hair and her fingers clenched claw-like into the sheets, the ugly chatter still pressing at her ears from the inside even as it fades. the archdemon is dead, its horde skittering back through the earth like tunneling insects, but maybe having heard it for so many months before has left a mark in her, torn something open that can't be closed, and now she still feels it when there should be nothing to feel.

... or maybe it's just being around more than one other grey warden for the first time since her joining. that's a new experience, after nearly a year of only sensing alistair in her periphery, and now there's more and they feel strange to her still, unknown even though she's well aware of them as people.

she doesn't have to sneak, anymore. vigil's keep belongs to her, she is commander, there is no one to tell her she's out of bounds or breaking curfew by slipping through the stone corridors, and the patrols she avoids are her own men, not templars, but it's a habit she doesn't care enough to shake right now. her quarters are only a few turns from the newly renovated soldiers' barracks anyway, so it doesn't matter, and then she's climbing hand over hand on the ladder of anders' bunk like when she was a little girl in the circle, poking his sleeping form with one finger. ]
